(9I had an idea but it was lost as i watched Mythbusters.....uhm...we need to go back to our base...))
Merlyn felt him tense. "WE should be getting to HQ..." she said quietly. "My brother would have a fit if he found out about this...And you two still haven't been properly introduced." She looked down from the gaze. "She also told me about the last Civil War....alot about it. That's why I know so much about this one..." she whispered. She turned toward HQ. "I'll race you!"

Mathius flung her over his shoulder and ran towards the base...not stopping for breaths..."Ho 'bout this..."He spoke happily, smiling..."What is your brother's name?"

"Hey hey hey!!!" said Melryn. She beat his back. "That's not fair!! I didn't get to run!!" she said. She smiled, though. "His name is Mathew."

Mathius continued to run...he started to laugh..."You should know by now...life is not fair..."He smiled a large grin..."Your brother and I share similar names...are we similar people though?"He raised one eyebrow after setting her down...

Mathius gave a wide goofy smile..."I suppose I am rather good at being a jackass..."he walked with her a little farther and stopped...

"I am not sure..."He ran his fingers through his thick hair and removed th bandana, letting it fall down to its full length..."I just feel something odd..."He continued to walk...

Merlyn ran her fingers through his hair. "Wow, I haven't seen your hair all the way down." She smiled. "It's really...well...long..."

Mathius gave out a slight chuckle..."Well, I guess it is...I haven't really noticed...I always have it up so I don't remember the length of my hair..."as they neared the outermost building of the camp he smiled and continued walking at a faster pace...

Merlyn laughed lightly. "I guess we need to go to the hospital," she said. She matched Mathius' pace. "You talk about not remembering things...why is that?"

He stopped abruptly as he started to explain..."Merlyn..it has been a long time since I have been at rest...for a long time I was on the run form the U.S. forces...but then you found me..."He smiled..."I suppose getting shellshock so many times will get to your brain...and I was taken to a base once...much like the one back there..."He turned his head to the hill..."They did horrible things, their means of torture for incredibly painful...more intense than any other torture interrogations I had been through...but..."He held up a bottle and smiled again..."These little miracles saved my life...they knock you out and cause your heart to beat at such a low rate no machine can pick it up...they released me into the river and I floated over to the battlefield that you found me in..."He no longer bore a smile, but a mark of wisdom filled his eyes...his face no longer young and quirky, now it was filled with the look of experience and intensity, and determination...

Merlyn had stiffened. She had heard rumors of the torture that they put A.R.E. soldiers through, but none like this. She said quietly, "Then I am a fool...I take things for granted. Before all of this, I was a pampered little girl whose father wanted her to marry a doctor. All I wanted was action...and now I'm in the middle of it...and it's tearing me to shreads..." She looked at Mathius. She saw his look. "I am a fool....."

Mathius kept his look and his voice was extremely gentle...as if speaking to a flower..."You are not a fool...I too joined for action...but I stayed for my country...as I feel is the very reason you do what you do..."He put his hand gently on her shoulder as he rubbed his neck...

Merlyn relaxed at his touch. "And also because I have no place to go," she said quietly. She smiled at Mathius. "Come one, we need to go see Matt."
Matt walked out of the base to see his sister and the man she was kissing in her. He smiled. "Eh, Birdie!!!" he called.
