Plus, you have to factor in the fact that many of the pilots during ANH were not fully trained in Red Squadron. Gold Squadron was the "old fart" squadron, as I call them, but they were in Y-wings, and had been doing trench runs, so they couldn't maneuver well enough, and had difficulty trying to keep task.
Gold squadron was extinguished mostly in the trench, even though ANH does not show it so much. DV had a big advantage, shooting a slow fighter and being in a fighter devoted to dogfighting, rather than a multi-role platform, gave the Trench run a serious death casualty.
Some of Red squadron got unlucky over the DS, but once again, the trench squeezed half of them out too.

1.... which really is the case prover that the Y-wing had grown outdated. After twenty years, the Y-wing was outdated.
Though even 35 years later, the Xwing still reigns supreme, simply because Luke doesn't like the E-wing, even if the E-wing can fly circles around teh Xwing and has about the same firepower.
That still frizzles me.

but the rest of the Republic, just throwing a superior product away? Hey, let the jedi do as he pleases, but don't make everyone else pay for one mere superpilot's decision to not ditch a droid who isn't compatable with a combat vehicle.
I mean, how would you feel, if upgrades were denied because someone else wants to keep his favorite little droid with him, while you could use the upgrade instead?
One guy shouldn't make the entire fleet suffer. Maybe a squadron or two, but the entire fleet? come on..

You make a good point. but it doesn't change the fact that the republic's starfighter development program stagnated horribly in those days.

On that note, what fighters are available on both sides, circa Shards timeline? Also, wasn't Wedge also all about the Xs for Rogue Squadron?

those fall under the catagory of "New Republic fighters that I dont' know much about", and so, I did not list them. I also dont know about H or J wings either. Mostly when they were released, rather than what they are. I'm assuming that Y-wings by this time are extinct for a battle, and only used as patrol and planetary defense. But to give more options, i added them.
