There was something to be said about the bottomless energy of the young. Probably that it was "absolutely ridiculous" or "completely unfair". To sum up, Cricket hopped around the battlefield with an exhausting enthusiasm, hurling chunks of rocks until the whole place looked like a war zone. She made up for poor accuracy with sheer determination and numbers, and eventually the last bird went down.
...the stone edge TM probably didn't hurt either.
Cricket for her part screeched and squawked happily, hopping back to Jun and shoving her hand under his arm, nuzzling his chest. "Good job, kiddo," he mumbled, bemused. He had to have his other hand pushing her head down to keep her from nipping at his hair.
"I think I'll manage," he answered Falkner, voice serious as he took the rewards, fully aware of how ridiculous he looked with the fawning Cricket cooing happily. He scratched her head just under her chin, and caught the brief hint of her back leg kicking like a dog's before she was returned to her pokeball.
Jun walked out, and visited the city's pokemon center for what he expected to be the last time for a while. From what he could gather, there was another one midway between here and Azalea or at least some sort of rest house. It would be a while until he hit Azalea, anyways. He grabbed lunch and was on his way by early afternoon.

While the two played, Torin slipped in, noticed only by Tria as he moved up beside her. He glanced down at the other sheep on her other side, then looked at Julie and... well, he wasn't sure what she was called. "The female mareep". "Hey Julie, you should really try battling with them," he called over, "You want to make sure they listen to you so you can get badges and everything, right?" Julie, in a fit of giggles, pushed mareepa off from trying to lick her face, wiping it with one arm and looking over with a grin. She gave the sheep another little push so she could get up, climbing to her feet and dusting herself off some. "Aw I don't really care about that, Tey," she admitted, "But okay!" She was probably still a little too young to really get the concept of obedience, but she was, herself, pretty compliant, so it wasn't too hard to get her to go along. Mentally, though, Torin noted that it might not be a bad idea to let some of her pokemon get disobedient-- just so she could get a more concrete idea of the notion.

To just about everyone's surprise, Julie turned and bounded over to a member of her team who had seemed virtually invisible to begin training. "C'mon Chico! You're my starter, so we should have our first battle together!" she urged, sweeping down to hug him, and sort of half pick him up from under his arms. "Chica?" the pokemon warbled in surprise, wiggling his legs a bit, but trying not tip them both over. Julie giggled and nuzzled her face against the top of hsi head, before letting go, and running off towards the tall grace. "C'mon Chico! Le's go!" she urged, already looking excited for their next little adventure. Torin sighed, his fingers twitching by his side. That one cigarette had not been enough...

Julie started hopping through the grass, with a confused and curious chikorita following right along behind him. Torin exhaled again, this time as he watched his sister. She was so carefree about all of these... he really hoped she didn't get herself hurt. "Whoa!" Both the blond and Tria started at the sound and looked attentively over, with the latter even taking a step closer. They relaxed, however, to see that Julie had merely fell back in surprise at the appearance of Hoppip bouncing from the grass. Chico defensively leaped in front of her, ready for battle, and Torin crossed his arms over his chest as Julie got back to her feet. "Hey Julie, do you remember your type advantages?" he called over. She glanced back his way, scrunching up her nose a bit. "I think so!" she called back, before straightening. "Okay, so who has it here?" he returned. She looked back to the pokemon, face contorted in confusion. "Um... neither?" she replied back. "Hoppip is part flying, Julie," he reminded in return, checking his watch. "Oh... o-ooohhh... Um. You can still do this, Chico!" she cheered in support, earning an uncertain, questioning glance from her starter pokemon.

With a happy shout, Julie leaped into the air, arms thrown up in celebration before lunged forward to wrap her arms around a surprised Chico. "Hehe, you did it! Congratulations, Chico! You were awesome!" she praised. It probably helped that the other pokemon was incapable of damaging him. Flushing a bit, he murmured a thanks -- which she didn't really understand, of course, but seemed to get the gist of. Pulling back, she turned to her other pokemon, waving over at them. She jumped and pulled back at the sensation of sparks close by, hopping to her feet and looking surprised as another Mareep came out, looking disgruntled. "Hey Tey! Should I catch this one too?" she asked, grinning back over at her brother. He was pretty sure she was joking, but gave her a look that said his answer (and amusement level) all the same. Giggling, she gestured for her own fluffy, white-colored sheep to come over, and she did, flailing her little legs before going into a bound to tackle the opponent.

Torin dropped his arms and walked over. "So you're sticking with Chico, huh? What about the other two, are you going to nickname them?" he asked casually, looking down at Julie who was busy praising her very-happy-go-lucky mareep. She blinked and looked up, rubbing behind the sheep pokemon's ears as she seemed to think. "I dunno..." she admitted, climbing to her feet, "D'you think I should?" Torin looked at her, then glanced over ta the grass. "I think... you should focus on defeating that pokemon. We can talk nicknames after," he suggested, eying the Bellsprout swaying its way over. Sure, he was the one ot bring up the topic, but he didn't want her to get into the habit of letting conversation deter her attention from her surroundings, especially in tall grass. There was always the chance of a pokemon attacking, and it would be best not to be caught off guard, even with the hoard of pokemon she had at her disposal.

As he left the confines of the city behind Jun considered, briefly, leaving his sword behind too. It was a distinctive part of him but, like his hair, he refused to give it up just to hide.
Wasn't that what this whole thing was about? That he wanted to prove that they couldn't take him, not if he didn't want them to?
Jun sighed, running a hand through his hair. At least the sword was practical, in a 'if they don't have guns' kind of way. His hair, however, was a b***h and a half to take care of when traveling in the wild so frequently.
It wasn't that Jun was averse to making use of streams and lakes to wash. It was just that he really freaking liked being able to take a hot shower. Not that he'd ever admit that to anyone.
He hadn't made it far from the city when he heard a...something, a sound. So of course, like any intelligent protagonist, he investigated.
The quiet scuffling got louder, and was accompanied by a soft, pained cooing. A little bird, gangly and with dirty feathers sticking up in patches, shivered in a tiny patch of clawed-up mud. Some of it had been pushed up in a crude circle, a few walls inches high in some places and more hole than wall in others.
"Jesus..." Jun breathed. He held a hand with palm towards Cricket, indicating she should stay still. He then crouched, hand coming back in to gently unclasp the katana from his belt and lay it on the ground. "Hey, birdie..." He did the low voice that Cricket liked, a bit clipped but airy.
"Pereep?" The little chick shuffled in the mud, wicked talons stirring up the earth.
'Woah those are..."
The chick stumbled to its feet, tottering a bit drunkenly from the weight of its body and head. The beak glinted under the dark mud.
Now more animated, the bird stumbled closer. When Jun sighed and raised a curled finger its way, the bird chirruped and sped into a hopping gait. The human forced himself still as it headbutted his finger, chirps growing animated.
"Oh-kay, theeere we go..." He sighed, gently bringing around another hand to lightly brush its back. He noted the cool toughness of something hard near the base, but quickly found that the bird was primarily a downy fluff. When his fingers reached just beyond, the chick's chirps quieted, and it began leaning into the fingers with a dopey, dreamy look on its face.
His other hand slowly withdrew to pull out his pokedex. It was something he'd never seen before, though he'd swear it looked somewhat familiar. The device beeped, and began reading off information.
Peafoul are highly desirable as exotic pets for their cute but ugly appearance and the beautiful scales that they shed along with their fluffy down.
Okay, that sounded interesting. He wondered what the thing was doing out here.Then with only a quick chirp as warning, the bird made the leap to Jun's forearm. "Careful with the claws, bud." He could no longer see the pokedex screen, as there was a small birb in the way, so he focused on holding his arm steady and listened.
Peafoul carry a faint but terrible odor from the poisons that they generate inside their bodies.
....what?
Jun carefully, without moving his arm or head, looked at the bird whose talons were wrapped around his arm. A faint odor he had assumed came from something dead nearby now floated to the front of his attention. As the pokedex continued, the little bird snuggled in against his neck, chirruping contently.
Any waste from this pokemon needs to be disposed of carefully because it is highly toxic.
...it didn't get any better after that.

Torin gave a start as his communicator went off and quickly shifted his attention down, but the adjust didn't last a second before he was glancing back up to make sure Julie and her pokemon were okay. Chico seemed to be standing guard for her, though, and Tria was close by, so there wasn't any reason to worry, but even so, he wasn't letting his eyes off her for long. "Ooohhh it's a monkey! Tey! It's a monkey!" Julie cooed, staring in awe at the wild pokemon that had leaped into view. It twitched its tail and looked at the girl curiously, before hopping closer. Chico immediately bounded forward, giving a defensive bray, and the pokemon jumped back, going on the defensive itself. A battle that probably could have been avoided-- but was likely for the best, anyway.

Torin was glancing up from his message throughout, but he didn't really respond to Julie's squealing and cheering other than a hum here and there. The girl was very supportive of her pokemon, once she got over the fact that, indeed, it was a monkey, and Chico was battling it. Thankfully, the battle didn't last long, and Chico stumbled back, dropping to sit, in a awkward, but rather endearing fashion, in front of his trainer. He had taken a... a good hit there, and he was defintiely still pretty weak here. "We should make sure to get him healed, Lemon," Torin suggested, tucking his communicator away after he had read the message, and moving over as Mareepa hopped forward to take on the rattata that had scurried out of the grass. "And maybe while we're in town, we can look into that gym. And if you defeat it... I may have a good way to celebrate," he offered, crouching down beside his little sister.

Julie snapped to attention like a dog to the sound of a treat bag. "You do!?" she asked eagerly, turning and bouncing. He gestured. "Focus on your battle, Julie. Don't get distracted, and don't leave your pokemon to fend for themselves unless you're sure they know what they're doing," he reminded her. She blinked, but nodded, turning to focus intently on the final battle Mareepa was having with her Rattata opponents. She beamed, though, as it turned out to be another easy victory, and turned expectantly to Torin, who smiled and straightened up. "Alright... Fair enough. Let's go see if we can find that gym, shall we?" he suggested, nodding his head before turning to walk. He paused a moment, looking at Tria, then glanced down to Julie. "Did you want to ride Tria into town, Lemon?" he asked. She instantly brightened at the idea, and leaped out of the tall grass. "Yeah! Yeah! Can I?" She turned to Tria at the question, smiling brightly, and by the equestrian's pokemon nod, Torin moved over, sweeping Julie up, and placing her on the horse's back.

Torin quizzed Julie lightly, walking her through what to expect, and what to use, while they made their way to the gym. This, of course, would have been written out more thoroughly, but strange things happen in the pokemon world, and alas, it was not meant to be. He gently coaxed her through the thought process of what to expect, and what to consider, both with a gym's primary type, and the consideration of dual types. He had no intention of encouraging her to research a gym beforehand, because honestly, he wanted to focus on all of her pokemon, and be prepared for anything. That being said... he did guide her towards choosing the right pokemon, and the battle proved easy, with extra confidence in the girl's grin from her brother's praise and encouragement. The next one might be harder, but... Torin was fairly sure they had this, thanks to all the pokemon they had managed to pick up.

Julie's eyes were sparkling as she was handed her badge, and she took it into her chest with both hands with a squeal and a happy dance of her own. Torin, meanwhile, passively gave the man a nod of acknowledgement, and exchanged a few words, before taking the HM and TM as well, and bidding him farewell. "C'mon Julie, you want to celebrate, right?" he urged, earning an almost explosively bright, excited grin from the girl as she eagerly ran along at his heels to exit. "Yeah! Yeah! Can we get ice cream, Tey!?" she asked excitedly, bouncing up and down. Mareepa let out a happy bellow of her own, leaping into the air as well, little legs flailing as she cheered along, blissfully unaware of the reason. Torin smiled a little and glanced at the sheep. "Sure, but I was thinking, why don't we do that... at a carnival?" he suggested, and that put Julie dead in her tracks. She stared up in awe, her badge still gripped in one little hand, before she leaned up and grabbed the edge of his shirt. "Torry.... There's a CARNIVAL?!" she asked breathlessly. He'd be lying if he didn't say, he loved seeing her get so whisked away by such a simple idea. He'd have to thank Derrek for alerting him to this later.
"Mm. Now, we just need to get some transportation, and we'll be there before you know it. And ice cream will be our first stop," he suggested, scanning for the pokecenter so he could, hopefully, figure out how to contact the carnival.
