Roland sniffed as a new scent wafted into the room. He looked up and saw a slightly older pup standing near him. "I'm Roland. Who might you be?" He said wagging his tail ever so slightly. He didn't move at all but sniffed at the strangers scent to learn it.

"Roland. My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius. But you may call me Maximus." He inclined his head in a small bow. Deciding that Roland posed no immediate threat Maximus sat down. "How long have you lived here?"

"Maximus..... that's a bit of an unusual name." He commented, "I've been here for a month. You?" He watched the older pup carefully assessing if he would be a threat if they got on bad terms.

"A little over a month." Maximus's eyes had not left Roland yet; his nose, ears, and peripheral vision watching the rest of the room. No challenge in them, at the moment, just watchful. "How well do you know the area?"

"Huh. I'm surprised we haven't run into each other before now." Roland said looking over Maximus, "I know it somewhat. My pack mates tell me all about the area and what I haven't seen yet. Why?" Maximus was an odd looking wolf and asked ever odder questions.

"The adults kept me in our collective quarters until now. I only just gained child status recently." He straightened his back, allowing himself a bit of pride in his new rank. "I'm just making some marks to myself." He answered. (marks aka mental notes)

Roland stared at Maximus as if he was insane. "Right.... what are you a soldier or something?" He said sitting up. He shook his head at Maximus thinking about how ridiculous he is. Even more than me, he thought.

"Cavalry actually. Well... I was once." Maximus sighed, thinking about the dreams he had each night. Charging down forested hills on a large horse; the security of heavy armor; endless fields of wheat and grain... He shook the thoughts away. Looking back at Roland, he flashed a quick but taut smirk, the rest of his face remaining neutral. "Don't worry, you're not the first to give me that look."

Roland merely scoffed at Maximus. "Sure." He said waving a paw, "I'm not worried about it." He flashed a toothy grin and hopped off the couch. "So what brings you here?"

"My business is my own." He said shortly, a little put-off that Roland showed no interest and had in fact waved it away. He stood back up as Roland jumped to the floor. Remembering others who had brushed him off as just acting like a puppy, Maximus tried to convey a more mature attitude, adding, "Just passing through."

Roland eyed Maximus as he tried to act mature. "Alright forget I had asked. I cry your pardon sai." He said smiling. Maximus was trying to act mature but it wasn't working very well. Plus he should be a pup and enjoy it.

Now it was Maximus' turn to look confused. "It is pardoned, but sai? What's a sai?"

Roland laughed at Maximus. He didn't quite understand how he didn't know what sai is but not everyone talked like him. "Sai is you. It's a way to say sir or madame." He explained.

"It's High Speech." Roland replied. He sat down and wrapped his tail around him facing Maximus.
