"Umm, no sir," she whispered, trying to lie convincingly enough. Mentally, she kicked herself.
He saw that! she groaned. Great, why not just write the truth on my forehead for the whole world to see?
Yet again she waited for a response from the Presence and yet again she was bitterly disappointed.
I wish I could tell so I could find out what this all means but I don't have any friends that are close enough. Captain Maximoru seems nice and incredibly intelligent but he's a captain and that would be like walking into the lion's den.
She didn't regret thinking it; she never did. But Hikari did wish that it wasn't true.
"You really saw a person being born from data?" she asked, hoping the question would sidetrack him.

Shaking his head and looking straight at her, Maxi smirks a dark shade to it. "I had know i cant dance but really, do you expect me to loose sight of my question that quickly? If its the whole captains thing, I think we both know I can keep a secret, and if its the usual thing then I will understand and we wont ever have to talk again." The second part loses most of it upbeat tone, andsounds as if it were a droning monologue.

Hikari merely stared.
"How...?" she whispered, finally. "What do you mean 'usual'?"
Immediately, she shut down, bewildered by his sudden leap of insight and at the same time wary. This was the first real conversation she had had with a captain so she was walking the tightrope without a net and no idea how far it was to the bottom.
She had decided that captains were part of their own class altogether. They possessed awe-inspiring power and yet walked among ordinary shinigami like it was no big thing. If any had heard of her opinion, they would have protested and said they were like everyone else but she wondered if they didn't notice, themselves, the thin line that separated them from their subordinates.
Every time Hikari thought of what she believed about the captains she honestly wished she was a bit less cynical. She felt like a hypocrite for ever thinking such things. Every person was divided by that same line yet connected by it.

His smile disappears completely and his eyes grow slightly distant, "Its not easy being a captain, nor did I start out with any ambitions to become one actually. Hell I cant even get her to get the hell back into her own world." Maxi raises his voice slightly as he flips his hat off of his head, landing nicely on Hikari's, and reveals a large firefly the size of a kitten sleeping on his head.

Hikari was simply amazed.
"How did you know? Why is she here?" she wondered aloud, slightly in shock. "You're so lucky."
Not only does he know where his zanpaktou is, but she's a living breathing creature, she thought. Almost immediately she felt guilty for telling the Presence to shut up and leave her alone. No wonder he's gone.

"Heh lucky you say. If she wakes up most people end up in mid fall on the falls here in the squad. If you want I could let her ride on your head, She and I hate each other though so you might want to be careful of how you act if she wakes up during our walk." HIs voice drops to whisper as he chats with her, before picking up his pace to move them along. "So what seems to be the problem, and is there any way I can help? I do have a way with problems." He winks as he jests.

"Oh well it's kind of a long story," she muttered. And I doubt I'd be alive long after I told it. But I'm kind of desperate. It's...about my zanpaktou."
Hikari took a moment to calm her nerves.
"I can hear him," she began. "More than I should. Well at least I could. I started talking to my zanpaktou not long after my first visit to squad 4." Here Hikari grimaced. "Our conversations are like the one we're having now except without the secrets. I didn't tell anyone because I was afraid it would be viewed as a problem.
"In Las Noches, half the time I was feral with rage and it was killing me. My zanpaktou warned me to calm down. One arrancar put me under for a surgery and I showed up in my zanpaktou's world. I didn't see him, though. He was hidden by the shadows.
"My zanpaktou and I fought and I told him to shut up and leave my alone."
Suddenly, Hikari's voice dropped sharply.
"And now he's gone. I can't hear him."

"Wish I could get rid of mine that easily" Maxi half jokes as he chuckles and steps down a small curb. His eyes focus on her zanpakto for a brief few seconds before flipping over to her eyes again, though in truth he doesnt even need his eyes to see, he just uses them not to be rude. "There is nothing out of the ordinary, really with being able to communicate with your zanpakto spirit, even after only a short time of having gained access to your sword. What would bug me is the fact that you yelled at your spirit, what was it telling you to do? What did it say to piss you off?"

"Exactly that," she said. "It was ordering me around and telling me things I already knew. I got angry-I guess that might have come from the surroundings-and I yelled."
Of course, by now, Hikari was completely immersed in the shock and pain. It was numbing to know there wasn't another voice inside her head.
"But the worst part is I can't even feel his presence," she continued. "I could always at least feel him in the back of my mind. But now there's nothing."

"Ah, I understand what you mean, even if I hate her I would miss her. Have you tried to apologize, in either his zanpakto world or in an easier way directly to his permanent physical embodiment?" Maxi raises his right eyebrow and nodes towards her sword, laying neatly across her clothing and right next to her. "It may not sound like the best Idea but sometimes the simplest things can fix everything."

"I'd rather not go back to his world, even if I could," she muttered. "But I do want to apologize. Even if it's to a sword."
She wondered if it would work and hoped so. She was sorry, amazing as it may be.
"Uhm could you hand me my zanpaktou? I still can't move my arm up and down," she asked, blushing. "Whatever that jerk gave me is taking it's sweet time disappearing."

Maxi stops his walking and shifts her weight over on to his left arm, moving Hikari to a more seated position. placing her robes in her lap and handing her zanpakto to her, Maxi smiles lightly as his spirit stirs on his own head. "Here you go, try not to drop it."

"I won't," she vowed staring at her zanpaktou sadly.
"I'm sorry," she both thought and said aloud. "I shouldn't have said what I said. Please answer me."
Hikari wasn't entirely sure if she had done it right and she waited for a long moment in silence. It was almost unbearable. She was just about to give up when she heard a voice. Her heart stuttered.

I forgive you, Hijuelo, the Presence said.
Hikari's agony and emptiness did a one-eighty. If her zanpaktou had a physical body like Maximoru's did, she would have leapt up, regardless of the paralyzer still working itself off in her system and hugged him without ever letting go. But instead, the embrace was purely in her head.
A lone tear of joy rolled down her cheek.

Maxi watches the seen with a detached sense of longing and, if even for a few seconds, worries about his relationship with his own spirit. "No matter how much you worry all you have to do is call upon them and they will be their, the only real question is are you truly listening? And do you want to hear what they have to say?" His 'all-knowing-smirk' danced back onto his lips and rested in its usual spot, before he swung he back up into both of his arms and re-situated her belongings.

Hikari clutched her zanpaktou, refusing to be parted from it. She was having a moment. Her first ever. What Maximoru said seemed to fade into the background, like the music you'd hear at the sappiest part of the movie. Still, his meaning remained clear.
Wow you were really freaked, the Presence said, surprised. You almost seem...normal.
Hikari growled at him.
Watch it, she warned. I'm still the same old me. Thank god.

I missed you, too, he replied with a chuckle. Looks like you cleaned up well in my absence. You'll be pleased to know that you're finally poison-free.
Yeah, but I still can't move, she said moodily.
I think I can fix that, the Presence began. It'll take a few minutes, though.
The Presence began instructing Hikari to move her arms and soon she had regained the full mobility of her arms.
The legs'll be trickier, the Presence warned. It's best for you to go the natural way.
Just a few more minutes and she could sit up. The only downside was that she would have brief episodes of paralyzation for the next couple of days.
I can't do much about that, the Presence sighed. The episodes will be like aftershocks from an earthquake.
Damn, Hikari swore.
So what do you think of Captain Maximoru? the Presence asked. Do you think he'll keep the secret?
I really hope so, Hikari replied. Even if being able to talk to you was normal, there's no way that you being able to influence my body is. And no doubt he's noticed. He's a scientist.
Well whatever happens will be on your shoulders, Hijuelo, the Presence reminded her.
Hikari glanced up at the captain and frowned. She already felt more like herself.
"Thank you," she said. "It looks like we're at your mercy now."
