If this were an anime...
Vahn would totally be picturing everyone dear to him smiling and talking with no actual audio track going on. You know - slow motion run with people popping up.
While Athan would be doing another slow-mo, totally not in Vahn's way, with imagery of his Grandfather, Father, and Mother all to readily apparent.
