Kaede looked at the pile of cilantro on her cutting board, pleased with how it turned out. Something that deemed a success. This job wasn't too bad after all, once she's attentive to the position her hand is and where the blade is. As long as there aren't any distractions...

"s**t. I can't stand that Kubo. Who the hell does he think he is? Just because he's older than all of us he can act like he's our boss and order us around? Man... we were having a good conversation too."

... she could chop anything without having to worry about missing a hand.

"..."

Well, she's done with the cilantro now. Kaede nervously slid the chopped herbs into a bowl and proceeded to clean the cutting board and the chef's knife with soap. The stems were placed in a separate bowl. Next, she would have to wash a fresh batch of basil too.

"Hey, Shirayuki. You mind if Sonoda and I talk here? Your station is out of Kubo's sight and he's been hounding us all day about work."

Well... she kind of did. But it'd be rude to say otherwise, and she wasn't a rude person. So...

"N-not at all."

"Thanks, I knew you would say that."

This was fine. She could do this. She just has to ignore Arai-san and Sonoda-san then she could get through this without any injuries, right? The girl stared hard at the pile of basil sitting on the cutting board. The hand holding the chef's knife was trembling from nervousness. 'You can do it. Look at the basil like its the most amazing thing in the world. Like its something you have never seen before.'

"Hey, did you hear the Hokage finally came back?"

Except a pile of basil really wasn't as interesting as that. The chef's knife clattered onto the cutting board, narrowly missing her thumb. Kaede was too curious to notice. Otherwise, she might have quit on that job and swap duties again with Fujinosuke-san. The girl looked to Arai-san with wide eyes.

"W-we... have a hokage!?"

"What do you mean 'We have a hokage!?' Of course we have one! Hello? Konohagakure? Place of the Hokage Monument? Are you dumber than I took you for Shirayuki?"

"Oh cut her some slack, Arai. Shirayuki was probably a baby when the hokage was around so she probably never saw him before. And there hasn't been much talk of him in the years after he left. How long ago was it... nine, ten years or something? Time sure flies."

"Wh-what is our hokage l-like?"

A hokage. A real, living breathing hokage. Not someone who lived only in the scrolls or the books she had read, where the stories of the hokage's lives were recorded. Kaede knew about them, but she had never really heard much about their Kage. She assumed that the tradition of having a single leader, a hokage, fell apart with the inner shinobi clan strifes. But it seems that, once again, her assumptions were wrong. Hokage. The strongest shinobi. The village's protector and pillar.

"Our hokage? To the elders its probably better if he didn't come back. But knowing him, he'd still cause them trouble anyhow even if he's away. Kage are supposed to protect their village right? But its a wonder this village is still intact with all the grief he's caused the elders. Haha. But its pretty damn funny to us villagers, well... if you're not caught up in the disasters. I remember some of the debris ended up clocking my neighbor on the head. Took her three days to get out of the hospital."

... and apparently a troublemaker. Shinobi sure were weird in this village. Weird, like Miharo-sensei. Or strong, like Sasaki-san, Masato-san, or Hyuuga-san. Or violent, like the Senju she met today. Ordinary people don't hold a candle to their prowess. The fierce old lady Mikage on her floor wouldn't stand a chance, even with her legendary Mikage chop... chop! The basil. Oh deeear. She almost got sidetracked from cutting the basil...

"Heh, you wanna bet he'll blow up a building today on his first day back?"

"s**t, that ain't a real bet, Sonoda. You know its going to happen. My paycheck says he destroys twenty buildings on his first day back."

"Alright, let's shake on it."

As Kurenai walked through the villages western gate she immediately felt a ave of happiness wash over her entire body. We're finally here, we made it back to Konoha. As she looked around Kurenai saw many buildings that she did not know but there was face that she recognized. It was comforting to look up and see the immortal stone face of Sarutobi Hiruzen watching over her.

"When the tree leaves dance, one shall find flames. The fire's shadow will illuminate the village, and once again, tree leaves shall bud anew." Kurenai whispered as she gave a slight bow to the past Hokage's likeness. Kurenai led her little brother to south end of the village, to the Hokage's Tower more specifically.

Kaede was able to block them out successfully. In her own mentally constructed world, there is only her, basil, and the rhythmic rocking of the knife, like the ticking of a clock. Slow and steady when you get the hang of it. Dark brown eyes watching her fingers and the way the blade descended intently. She scraped the knife against the cutting board to move the herbs into a neat little pile and then slid them into a bowl separate from the bowl of cilantro or the bowl of stems. Kaede looked at her work, pleased at how they had turned out.

"Oh hey, you're finished, Shirayuki? After you give those herbs to Kubo, do you mind peeling the potatoes and slicing up lemon slices to garnish the iced tea and the lemonade for us?"

"Uhm... s-sure, Sonoda-san."

"Thanks, I'll pay you back. If you need me working one of your shifts for you, let me know."

The girl walked off and couldn't help but wonder why they were even bothering to show up at work, if they weren't going to do anything but chat. Wouldn't it make more sense to get the work done now than to pile it all up later with all the debt you owe? But she supposed that socializing with a friend would take priority over work. Kaede wouldn't know. All of her conversations with her coworkers were brief and about work. And there weren't many things she had around to distract her from her job... except for those two right now. The girl meekly approached the towering figure of Kubo and presented the three bowls to the soup chef.

"You're still slow, but I can see why. Your cutting technique is looking much better. If you keep this up and quicken your pacing we might have you at the cutting block instead of Fujinosuke. Alright, a message from the the desert station: they're running low on fruit so they need you to cut lots of strawberries."

"Ye-yes, Kubo-san," the girl briefly bowed her head but flinched at Kubo-san's next words.

"God damnit. Where the hell are Sonoda and Arai off to now!? I swear I'm going to kick their asses."

She only hoped that if Kubo-san wouldn't kick her a** if he found them slacking off at her work area.

Kaede finished washing the strawberries and the chef's knife. Then, she dried her hands and proceeded to slice off the leafy portions. The girl briefly looked up to see that Fujinosuke returned with cleaning gloves, it seems he's finished with bathroom dut- No, she would not be distracted this time. Kaede firmly gripped her knife and frowned at the cutting board. She wouldn't be distracted. All she needed to do was block them out like she did for the basil.

"Oi, Sonoda. Arai. You guys know our Hokage came back right?"

La. La. La. Cutting straberries.

"Arai and I were just talking about that. Anyone who can read the newspaper pretty much already knows about that now."

La. La. La. Not curious at all!

"Yeah, well I bet you haven't heard about this bit of info yet."

La. La. Laaaaa. Not liiiiiisteeeee-

"a*****e came back with an illegitimate son."

-eeeening... what? What!?

"What!?"

"No way!"

"I'm dead serious. I found out from poor Aya-chan who was in tears a few minutes ago. I haven't seen her cry that hard since his wedding day and we all know how well that marriage turned out. b*****d's no good."

So not only was their Hokage Konoha's local Godzilla, but he was also a womanizer? Kaede frowned with disproval. Even though the girl has yet to meet the man, she already didn't like him. He was clearly not a role model for the children or for aspiring shinobi. Not a good citizen of Konoha. Kadee hoped she would never have to see or talk to him.

"s**t, still hung over that woman, Fujinosuke? Eh... well, she has a horrible taste in men and you have a horrible taste in women. You two would've been perfect for each other if she didn't dump you to go profess her love to our Kage. And then he turned her down for... I forget, wasn't it something about not being as pretty as he is? I have a poor memory. But anyways, you sure you aren't holding some old grudge against him, Fujinosuke?"

"I'm serious! All he does is make women cry! And I don't get why all the women likes the b*****d so much. What's so great about a heartbreaker? The chase? The face?"

"You do have a point. Every generation of women in this village has some weird gravitational pull to the assholes and the social retards. At least, that's what I hear from my dad's generation. And this generation? I hear that Taiju also has some popularity among the women as well. Must be in the Senju blood."

"Speaking of which, he doesn't look like he's aged much since the day he left."

"Not fair. That is so not fair..."

Taiju-san? Popular with women? He didn't look like it. But there was that mask in the way so she wouldn't know. Sempai's case she could understand. No, it was pretty obvious from his looks and the way he held himself. But at least the both of them were much more likable than the Hokage. Well, if you could get past that scary and violent nature... However, Kaede had no intention of pursuing them or anyone at all. Her dating? That would be... weird.

"Oh s**t! Kubo's coming! If Kubo asks, tell him you never saw us, Shirayuki! "

The three of them ran off to Kami knows where.

"We'll be back!"

And now she was alone.

"God damnit. Where the hell are those brats? Oi, Shirayuki!" Kaede jumped. Meekly, she turned around, eyes wide at the angry visage of Kubo-san. Though it wasn't directed at her... too much. "What the hell are you doing? I know you take forever but you haven't even finished removing the green tops. It's like you been standing there dozing off like a moron. I know you picked up some of your useless father's traits but we're counting on you. At least get something done right."

"I... I'm so sorry sir. It will n-not happen again."

"Good. It better not, Shirayuki."

"..."

Today really wasn't her day.

Kaede finished removing the green tops and proceeded to slice the strawberries into quarters, softly humming to herself as she works. The flesh of the fruit chilling the tips of her fingers and their juices dripping down the blade and onto her fingers. And now that Kaede finally has some peace and quiet, her mind began to wander back to her previous actions. It was already afternoon, and from her last conversations with Taiju-san, it seemed Hyuuga-san had not completed the genin exams yet. Kaede had been confident that Hyuuga-san would pass the exams without fail, and now... she was kind of worried. Was he okay? Was Sempai okay? Kaede's eyebrows furrowed. If a genius like him could have trouble, then imagine how she would fare when her time would come. Not to mention she had, once again, ditched one of her instructors. But for good reason this time. Still... Kaede didn't tell Taiju-san where she would be after her shift was done. And she wasn't sure if he'd still be there when she gets back. Oh... what to do about Taiju-san? Would he be mad at her and leave? How should she make it up to him? Or Miharo-sensei?

Kaede gathered all the strawberries into another bowl and began to head over to Kubo-san's station. The girl had finished much sooner than she had expected, now that those three weren't around to distract her. Though the girl had to admit, as much trouble and distractions the three had given her, it was kind of... fun.

"Ugh. I still can't find those brats. Oh, you're finished Shirayuki? Good job. Hey. Since we're down a few hands, do you mind take up their load until I can find them?"

Fun, but not the kind of fun she wanted around her in the middle of a job. Well, they had already asked her to fill in their jobs for them and she said she was going to do it anyway...

"I-I will."

"Okay, well more people showed up at the buffet than we expected. You're going to need to cut up another batch of strawberries. Arai was supposed to make lemon slices for cocktails, iced tea, and the lemonade and what not. Sonoda was in charge of peeling the potatoes. And as for Fujinosuke, well... you'll be pretty busy so I'll have someone else wash the dishes."

"Remember all that Shirayuki?"

"Y-yes, Kubo-san.... More st-strawberries. Lemon -sl-slices. A-and p-p-potato peeling."

"Good."

She returned to her station with a tray full of potatoes, lemons and strawberries. Then, the girl proceeded to rinse the dirt off the potatoes with warm water. Water never ceased to be marvelous to the girl. No matter how dirty the object is, once it dips in water in comes out clean as the day one is born. Like the black ink previously on her face or the stains on her kimono. Perhaps that's why it is associated with life and rebirth in rituals. Though no amount of bathing would rinse her completely of her ugliness or flaws. Kaede glanced at her bandaged fingers. Or wounds. It would have to take some sort of miracle water to do that.

Kaede left the potatoes to dry on a paper towel and proceeded to search the drawers and the closets. Hrm... someone else is using the potato peeler. Guess she'll just have to skin them the old school way. She held the potato in her left hand and the knife in her dominant hand, thumb positioned on the spine of the knife. Now what's next? The girl has seen Fujinosuke-san do this enough times to get an idea of the steps. But he wasn't here to give her any safety tips. Kaede gulped, and lightly applied pressure to the knife. But it wasn't enough to cut into the potato.

Or her fingers.

She didn't know she should feel happy or disappointed at herself. A frown. More strength. She needed to invest a little more strength into the blade. Slowly, but surely, the blade dug into the potato. Then, when she was sure it was in deep enough to remove the skin but not most of the flesh, her hands began to turn the potato clockwise. The skin peeled off from the top of the potato all the way down to the bottom, until it was naked and displaying its white flesh. Pleased with her work, Kaede put the vegetable in yet another bowl and proceeded to do the same for its brethren.

Kaede picked up the second potato and slowly, as she began to peel, ideas as to what she could give to Miharo-sensei, Taiju-san, Hyuuga-san, and Sempai began to form. Miharo-sensei's case would be pretty easy. He wanted an apple and she said she'd give him an apple. But since Kaede caved in to delinquency and ditched him at the forests she should probably get him two apples. No, three. To also make up for thinking indecent things about her sensei. There should be enough money left over after she pays rent to get Miharo-sensei three apples. The girl nodded firmly to herself.

Taiju-san she had also ditched. He said he didn't mind receiving Shin-san. So maybe she should make a stuffed animal for him. Except Taiju-san's gift won't be called Shin-san. There can only be one Shin-san or he wouldn't be special. She will let Taiju-san decide what to name his plushie. But what animal should it be? Another kitty? Or maybe a bear? A bear would suit Taiju-san's nature more. There weren't many materials to work with, but she could go look up different types of fabric at the library. Perhaps it would be possible to make an animal plushie using old clothes she outgrew.

And as for Hyuuga-san... well, he was a noble. He probably had everything. The second potato was finished and placed next to the first one in the bowl. Kaede let the knife sit on the cutting block. Maybe something practical could work. Something he'll need once he becomes a shinobi. She could buy him a kunai pouch. A leather one. Maybe personally add some embroidery to it herself. There must be something in the house that she could trade for ryo. There was always the option of donating hair to a wig shop. Yeah. That could work as a congratulatory gift...

Then, there was her grievances with Sempai's... soncousin's broken doll. Kaede's eyebrows knitted together, and unconsciously, one of her fingers touched her lips. That single action set them on fire. The girl furiously shook her head, flushing in embarrassment. There is no way she could give that boy the gift herself. Or face him without... running away. Maybe she could get Sempai to pass it on to him. Yeah... if she could find him again. His soncousin liked dolls. Maybe she could make him clothes for his dolls. No... there was no telling if he had other dolls. Or if he did, what size his other dolls would be or if the clothes would fit. The girl could try to make the doll herself... but that would require lots of research and it would have to be a wooden doll. She'd have to wait for another paycheck to buy wood.

Kaede shook her head. She had to get back to work before thinking about a second paycheck. The girl picked up another potato. At least now she had some ideas...

Third time was the charm. Kaede felt comfortable with the knife, to the point where she felt comfortable with peeling. As long as she was delicate with the amount of pressure she put on the blade and as long as she watched where her fingers were, there should be no injuries. The girl warily glanced around the building. It was fairly quiet now. Too quiet. If she was alone at home, it would not bother her. Yet she's at work right now and Fujinosuke-san, Sonoda-san, and Arai-san haven't come back like they said they would. Did they decide to ditch work all together? Or did they get cau-

The rest was muffled incoherent by the slamming of a door, by the noises of pots and pans clattering, and a lot of yelling. Kaede sweatdropped. Well, there was her answer. And it would be a while before her coworkers returned, so she should just finish up the rest of her work before they get back. The girl placed the third skinned potato in the bowl with the rest. Hrm. Would three be enough? Maybe she should skin another one just in case...

With her new found skills at cutting, perhaps she should start preparing meals from now on instead of the typical eat out they normally do. Except on Saturdays, the only activity she and her father really do is eat out and talk. It would significantly cut down the amount of money they spent on meals. Though the only thing she would know how to do is make mashed potatoes and a potato, herb, and water soup. Hrm... maybe she should go see if there are cookbooks at the library? If this was yesterday, the girl would have considered it a definite possibility. But now that Kaede was enrolled in the academy, she might not have the time to do self-teaching at the library anymore. Or to hang out with her father anymore.

"..."

Kaede shook her head. But that was something that the girl should've known when she decided what type of education she wanted. It would've been the same with any other career choices. It just seemed... like a really lonely thought. A frown.

'Quit acting like some clingy child, Shirayuki. Get back to work.'

She set the last potato in the bowl with the others and proceeded to pull out a plate. This time for lemons. The girl rolled out a lemon from the tray and began to slice. Compared to skinning a potato, or chopping cilantro, this was a much easier task. Now that she thinks about it, she totally missed out on having lunch. Absent-minded, she pulled her index finger into her mouth to savor the citrusy flavor. The first time she has ever tasted a lemon. And it made her face frown even more. No wonder they call it "sour". Well that killed her appetite. She rinsed her hands and the knife under hot water. Then, she set the lemon slices on the plate. Now for the strawberries...

The green tops were removed, and now she was cutting the fruit up into halves and quarters. Bright red and juicy. The strawberries looked really, really good. Something she has only seen and never eaten. They probably taste really good too, if they're on desserts all the tme. She really had to wonder. Kaede frowned at herself. No! These were for the customers to eat. Not for someone like her. A good citizen of Konoha would not do something so selfish. The child's fingers twitched. And with impeccable timing, there was the loud noise of a hungry stomach growling. It seemed the appetite the lemon had killed came back full force.

"..."

Maybe one. She'll just try one, just for the sake of saying, "I have tried a strawberry before. It was good." That's all. A nervous drop of sweat trailed down her cheek and a trembling hand reached out for one of the strawberries on the cutting board. Then, the fruit was deposited in her mouth. Sweet, fleshy-soft, and a little... "tangy". Really, really, really good. Kaede looked at the strawberries with new eyes. And rather wide too. No wonder they're expensive and in high demand all the time! Kaede gulped, sad that it was over. Hrm. There were plenty of strawberries right? It won't hurt anyone if she eats another one right? A shaky hand slowly grabbed yet another one, dark brown eyes darting at Kubo-san's door. Then she chewed and swallowed this one slower than the last one. But it wasn't satisfying. Okay, just another one so that her hunger goes away! Kaede found herself once again reaching for another. But that one just fueled her hunger. Uhm... until she stops thinking about them all together, because it would be distracting. Surely Kubo-san would understand right? And another. And another. And another. And another. And another. And... then there was no more.

No more.

She just ate all the strawberries.

She just ate ALL THE STRAWBERRIES.

'WHAT THE HELL SHIRAYUKI? YOU DITCHED TWO OF YOUR INSTRUCTORS. BREAK A NOBLE SONCOUSIN'S DOLL. AND NOW YOU'RE EATING OTHER PEOPLE'S FOOD LIKE A LITTLE THIEF. ONCE KUBO-SAN FINDS OUT HE'S GOING TO BEAT YOU UP WORSE THAN YOUR COWORKERS AND THEN HE'S GOING TO TELL THE BOSS AND YOU'RE GOING TO LOSE YOUR JOB AND THEN YOU CAN'T PAY RENT AND FATHER WILL BE EVICTED AND NO ONE WILL HIRE YOU ANYMORE BECAUSE EVERYONE WILL KNOW OF YOUR DELINQUENCY. YOU'LL HAVE TO LIVE OFF THE STREETS FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE EATING TRASH E;K.FJAFDDSFJS!!!'

Kaede tugged at her bangs in frustration. Oh gooooooood, how is she going to face Kubo-san now!?

Kaede hesitantly dragged her feet to her guillotine, where Kubo-san would surely be. The girl would very much love to flee the building and come back with a new batch of strawberries. To hide her humongous blunder. But that would be lying. And she simply didn't have the money for that. Otherwise the girl probably wouldn't have been tempted in the first place. It would take her ten minutes standing outside Kubo-san's door filled with dread before she would open the door. It would take her another ten minutes watching Kubo-san yell at and lecture Fujinosuke-san, Sonoda-san, and Arai-san. And it would take her another ten minutes for the four men to notice the gloomy girl standing at the doorway.

"AND IF YOU AREN'T GOING TO WORK, DON'T SHOW UP AT A-Oh, you're back Shirayuki. The peeled potatoes and the lemon slices look good. But where are the strawberries?"

"..."

Here comes the last moments of your life, Shirayuki.

"... I
a-ate them, s-s-sir. I'm so s-sorry!"

"..."

Oh, gooood. The silence was killing her. Just let her have her punishment already!

"How many strawberries did you eat?"

"A-a
whole p-p-patch."

"Hrm..."

Kaede stood there hands over her head, legs trembling from utter fear for the inevitable punishment. She dare not look at his face, afraid of what sort of anger or disappointment might be on Kubo-san's face. Fists may hurt, but the body can forget it over time. Yet words and expressions... they often left a greater wound. Ones that she has yet to forget.

"Take it out of Arai's paycheck."

!

"What!?"

"For ditching on the job and talking back to me. In fact, since all of you are guilty of the same crime, you will all forfeit your paychecks to Shirayuki since she's basically done your jobs for you."

"Hey! That's not fair!"

"You can't do that! You're not our boss!"

"I actually did part of my job and cleaned the bathroo-"

"OH SHUT UP ALL OF YOU."

A stunned silence.

"Shirayuki has been even been more useful than three grown men. How sad is that huh? I think this is a fitting punishment. You may have cleaned the bathroom Fujinosuke, but until the shift is over, you keep working. When I checked on you, the dishes were still dirty. So it does count. And yes, Sonoda, I may not be your boss, but I can certainly go tell him right now how badly your work ethics have been ever since you set foot into this restaurant. Instead of losing this week's paychecks, you'll be losing your jobs. I haven't said anything yet because I know you three haven't had the best living conditions since the Fire Master and the economy is still in the pits. Would you prefer that instead?"

Three sullen shakes of the head.

"Good, glad we're all on the same page for once. Alright, Shirayuki. There's another batch of strawberries in the fridge in kitchen 4. I'll take the potatoes and the lemon slices off from you for now."

"Uhm... thank you, K-kubo-san."

"Good, now back to you thr-"

Kaede left and shut the door behind her. Quickly, she needed to quickly prepare another set of strawberries. Part of her heart greatly relieved and the other part guilty for taking her coworkers' pay. A frown. She should make it up to them somehow when she sees them.

Kaede set the tray of strawberries onto her counter and began to systematically remove the leafy tops. This time, only focusing on the sole rhythmic motion of cutting instead of their taste. She had learned her lesson this time. When the girl was finished, and they were all into neat little slices, she hastily gathered all the strawberries into a bowl and hustled over to Kubo-san's station.

"Alright. These are looking good. You're going to preparing a chicken and that'll be it for today. Here are the instructions I've written down for you."

"Th-thank you, sir."

The cold bloodless body of the chicken had been washed and sat on its throne of paper towels to dry before her. With a tentative finger, she poked at one of its legs. It jiggled and it felt gross. Kaede cringed and immediately washed her hand. She knew it would do her no good since the girl would have to touch it again anyways, but it wouldn't do any good to dirty Kubo-san's instructions.

Hesitantly, she grabbed the chicken and flinched at the cold and the wet and the slimy and bleargh. Okay, so first she had to remove the back bone by cutting along the neck bone to get out. Cut one side out and then out out the other side. What did it say about any bones in between? Remove them? Okay. Two fingers reached into the cold gummy-like flesh to pull out some random bone. A shudder. After this she is sooooo going to wash her hands over and over and over...

So she removed the backbone. Now what? Find and get rid of the wish bone? With the knife, the girl stabbed through the keel bone and cut around the wishbone, making sure not to cut herself in the process. It would be bad to get dead chicken in her wounds... Once the wishbone was removed, the girl found herself looking at two halves of poultry. Now, she had to sever the thigh from the leg. With the knife raised, she allowed the blade to descend on the joint. No dice. She wasn't strong enough. Or rather, she didn't trust her arm strength enough to cut without injuring herself.

"..."

If only Fujinosuke-san was here. A sigh. But she was going to be a shinobi, right? Cutting through flesh would be a skill she'd have to learn...

Her hold on the blade tightened a little bit more. A little firmer grip. A little more strength. Soon, she could feel the blade cut through the chicken's thigh to separate it from the body. To separate the thigh from the leg, she began to cut through another one of its joint. Then, finding the joint that connected chicken breast to chicken wing, the girl began to sever them as well. The same was repeated for the other half of chicken. What was once one chicken was now eight pieces sitting in a large metal bowl. With that being the last task of her shift, the girl washed the knife and her hands - very very thoroughly - and the rest of her work area. Her blue apron untied and dropped in the laundry basket with the other used aprons. Then, she meekly approached Kubo-san.

"These look decent. Alright, we're going to wait on those three to come back and forfeit their checks."

A pause.

"Y'know, you're lucky those three were goofing around on the job when you told me about the strawberries. And if you didn't already look miserable too, I would've kicked your a** too. A straight up warning, I hope you've learned your lesson."

"Y-yes sir... I h-have."

It was only because they were there that she had a narrow escape. She would feel really, really bad if she walked off with their money, even if she took over their jobs for them...

"Uhm... K-kubo-san?"

"What is it Shirayuki?"

"Inst-stead of taking Arai-san, Sonoda-san, and Fujinosuke-san's p-p-paychecks... can I h-have some apples?"

"...? Weird request, but sure. What kind and how many do you need?"

"Th-three. Uhm... the r-red kind."

She hoped they were the right kind of apples you're supposed to give a teacher. And now that she had the apples without spending her paycheck, perhaps she might have enough to make rent, buy Hyuuga-san's kunai pouch AND wood for Sempai's soncousin's doll. But that was simply wishful thinking, since her age means that the boss can underpay her.

"Alright. Here you go. Doesn't look like much. Anything else you might want?"

"Uhm... I-I've recently enlisted t-to the shinobi academy."

"Oh really? Kind of hard to see you as a shinobi, with your meekness. And its very dangerous, especially for a girl. You sure you wanna take that path?"

"I'm very s-s-serious about it, sir."

"Hrm... I see. Well, I won't dissuade you from your path if your father already hasn't. And I guess that since you're going to school now, you want to know if there's any way arrange with the boss a shift that will work with your new schedule, right?"

"Y-yes, K-kubo-san."

"Well, I can only see you working night shift, and there's no way you can do that and school at the same time without going through insomnia. If your father is like any other parent, he won't approve of that. And though the economy has been recovering after the Fire Master left, jobs are still scarce. The other daytime shifts are booked. Sorry to say, you're going to have to find a job somewhere else."

"Oh..."

"But if you're going to be a shinobi, jobs won't be that hard for you to find once you graduate, y'know? So hang in there."

"I s-see... th-thank you Kubo-san."

"Heh. Its too bad you chose this time to leave after showing us your working capabilities. Looks like those three stooges are going to have to step it up or find themselves another work mule. Well... in any case, I wish you luck, Shirayuki. You're going to need it."

"Th-thank you, Kubo-san. S-see you again." Kaede bowed.

"Yeah, yeah. See you."

She waved and turned around, the bag of apples in hand. Kaede opened the kitchen door feeling a little weight in her chest. She has worked here for two years yet it feels like a great part of her life. Part of her already misses this place. Though there have been many mishaps, lots of ruckus, and delinquency, the people here weren't as callous as her past coworkers. And somehow between then and now, they have really grown on her. Because sometimes when they aren't joking about her, they'd joke with her. Because even though they put work on her shoulders sometimes, they'd offer to make up for it. And while their form of kindness was different as the kindness from shinobi she met today, it was still a form of kindness.

A lot of things were happening to her today. She lost her job. But she met her future classmates, her future sensei, one of this years graduates, Taiju-san, and Sempai. People she would probably see more often in the future in place of her coworkers.... ex-coworkers. In a way, it felt like the end of her childhood, and that the academy that would take her to the path of the shinobi was a new chapter in her life. Too soon. It was happening much sooner than she thought it would. The girl turned around to stare long and hard at the paint-faded sign of the Pacific. Lips thinned.

'Thank you for taking care of me.'

If only she could say that to their faces right now...
