Gion broke into a huge grin and threw his arms around his mother, keeping Daemon clenched tightly in his fist as he did so. There was so much he would have said if he would have been able ... but of course he couldn't. His voice had left him yet again.
Can you tell her that I'm happy to see her again? he asked Daemon, since he knew his mother didn't know sign language.
Well ... that was a bit of a twist.

Gion is very happy to see you again.
Daemon laughed a bit as he could feel that kind of happiness roll down their connection. It felt good and he was happy for it.

Serenity hugged Gion back, and her joy turned to worry when she felt how cold he was. Of course, she thought. He had never been out of the desert, he would not be prepared for the winter of the north.
"You should have more clothes on," was the first thing she said to her son - the first thing she had said to him in over eleven years. "And you need a good shelter ..."
Her motherly instincts had never faded, not even once, during her long absence.

Gion shrugged one shoulder and pointed towards the hole he had begun to dig.
Can you tell her that the snow is too heavy to dig through? he asked Daemon sheepishly. I'm sorry for having to go through you like this ... Mother doesn't know sign language.
Although he was sort of wondering if perhaps he could speak to her in the same way that he spoke with Daemon ... by thought ...

Yes well... he's been trying to dig a shelter and the snow is quite heavy unfortunatley.
Daemon told her.
Oh.. and don't take his silence the wrong way.. .he... can't talk... not like I notice being a sword and all but he can't.

Serenity blinked. "Gion, what happened to your voice?" she asked anxiously, saddened by the news. She didn't want to believe it ... he had always been the singer of the family, as a child he had been singing almost nonstop ... his voice had been so lovely ... and he had never had a harsh word for anyone ...

Gion shrugged self-consciously and scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. He set the sword in the crook of his elbow and signed, You disappeared and then Father died and then Elnara disappeared and then my voice disappeared. Thinking it to Daemon at the same time. Perhaps he would be able to teach his mother sign language somehow ...
But no one knows if there's a connection, he added, his fingers not seeming to want to move. They were growing stiff ... But now that Elnara's gone again we can't really find out if there's a connection or not, he added sadly, shivering as the wind blew snow down his back.

Daemon translated this word for word this time, as the last of any 'sight' he had faded away but he had a feeling he knew what Gion was doing. He had been told about Gion using sign language and so... hoped that he had the right idea by translating it exactly.

Serenity's eyes narrowed. Elnara was gone again?
"Let's worry about some shelter first," she said brusquely, "and then we can talk."
She changed into a moor cat once again and started digging into the side of the snowbank. Size and weight were a factor here: she would be able to create a large shelter for Gion far more quickly in this shape than in any other.

Gion put the sword back in its sheath and moved out of his mother's way. He wasn't afraid of her at all now, not now that he knew who she was. He rubbed his arms, trying to warm up a bit, but it seemed impossible ...
Do you think she'll travel with us? he asked Daemon curiously, ruffling some of the snow out of his hair.

Maybe... I mean where we're going is far out there, so it should not be a problem.
Daemon replied back certainly.

Gion smiled warmly and kept his eyes on the moor cat.
I hope she can, he thought softly. But if as Elnara says that it presents a danger to me then she might not ...

Serenity dug until she had a nice little snow cave big enough for even her enormous shape to fit in comfortably. It really didn't take long, after all her paws were bigger than most people's heads - and when she finished she reverted to her own form and beckoned for Gion to get in out of the weather. Such as it was.

Then we'll have to get them first before they get us.
Daemon replied back which he knew this was something Yume would say.

If we can find them, Gion agreed. Though even if we did we would have no way of knowing it was them. Since after all no one knows who it is, he reminded Daemon, crawling into the cave (even though it was nearly big enough for him to walk upright inside it).
Once he was near the back, he looked over his shoulder to see if his mother was going to join them.
