New rant: What in the f*** is wrong with 13 year olds and their godlike attitudes? i've seen it over and over again: they know way more than their parents/any adult, they are nigh invulnerable, and consequences happen to other people.
current 13 year old gal that crossed my path recently: has 20 year old boyfriend who she has decided to run away with. boyfriend was taken away by cops for "rape" (of course it was mutual!) when the mom was called from school and caught them doing the "horizontal monkey dance" at home. now the child says she wants to get married to him. is the term "jailbait" no longer in use today? does having sex really make you an instant adult when you have no driver's license, steady job and can't even cook for yourself? NOT!
why did this happen? the mother set the example of taking in lovers and giving her daughter no attention. so the obvious answer for the child was that this is how you get love in your life: find a lover.
lesson: please set a good example for your kids. they will imitate everything they see you do, especially as adults. how many times have we been caught or caught ourselves sounding like our parents?! do we really need more stupid or abusive people in this world? can't we try to raise our children to be decent to others and make this world a better place, one child at a time?
well there's my rant. i hope i didn't offend anyone.

Replies: BlackPresia, I agree with you completely. Now, pretty much all 13 year olds think they're brilliant (heaven knows I did sweatdrop , and it's clear my sister does), but thankfully, not all of them are turning into... *censored*.
Disney: Yes, their sequels generally (as in 99% of the time) suck. However, I personally liked the Lion King 2 redface (Don't get me started on 1 1/2, though *shudder.*)
My own rant/question: So, I got my first random beggar PM today, less than a week after FINALLY getting my lovely butterfly wings! gonk What? If you dress nicely, it's grounds for harrassment because you MUST be loaded? How are these PMs handled? It's ok to just ignore this little beggar-boy, right? Adding insult to injury is that the kid can't flippin' spell!
Minor annoyance: yes. Yet I feel so much better now that I've ranted. I love this thread. 4laugh

To my knowledge, it's not harassment unless they're PM'ing you repeatedly to ask for donations or items, etc. If they just do it once, all you have to do is tell them "no", and leave them be. If they choose to PM you and continue to beg, then you can try contacting a moderator and ask if it would constitute as harassment.
I've had my share of beggars too, as a moderator and a user who has a lot of really expensive items. Usually I just tell people "I don't donate to people who ask for donations, sorry", and they wind up taking a hint and leaving me alone. Occasionally I'll donate to friends if they ask me for donations, but I don't really like to. I like donating to people who don't ask for donations. 3nodding

As annoying as it is, it's partly biological too. I'm in the middle of a Child Behavior and Development class in my college, and what you're describing is often common in young teens and youth. A lot of kids don't understand until they're older (and fully developed, both mentally and biologically) that consequences do happen to them, that they are notin fact invincible, and so on. They just can't see it at a young age (usually - there are exceptions in some cases) because their brains aren't developed enough to that point yet. And with today's media, and society, even with a good parental role model, kids are often learning more from other people and places besides their parents. With explicit music and sexy movies to watch, it's no wonder that a lot of kids are getting "off course." Though I do agree, a 13 year old with a 20 year old "boyfriend" should have her parents step in, and the guy sent to jail. That's gross. Which reminds me of the 13 year old I saw on Gaia the other day - she had been "dating" her "boyfriend" for 4 years. At 13. So she started dating when she was 9. 9 for ******** sake!!! gonk What sane parent lets their child "date" at 9???

Nikolita snip gonk What sane parent lets their child "date" at 9??? The same kind of parent who buys their kid smokes at 12 because they have the habit and aren't old enough to buy their own. (true story of a friend of mine.) I couldn't date until I was 16. Mom's rules. It sucked at the time, but I can understand why she stuck by it, and NOW I'm mostly glad she did. The same "16" rule is applying to my sister, who's turning 14 this month. She came looking to me for backup that the rule is unfair. Her logic is that the rule is to stop stupid choices, but she's smarter than that and wouldn't make any stupid choices, so she should be exempt. whee I basically told her I thought the same thing at her age. 13 year olds think they're geniuses and will continue to think so until they're 16-18, and at the mall, and they see some "I'm so cool" tweens. That's when she'll realize "Holy cow! We were idiots!" and not a minute before. She doesn't believe me, but if she did, it would destroy my theory, now wouldn't it?

lol Yeah, the attitude goes with the developmental stage I think. I remember the day I suddenly realized how absolutely annoying I must have been before the age of 17 and realized that even though at the time I argued against it, I really was just an idealistic kid and life experience does matter.
Latest research shows that the part of the brain that handles consequences and projecting out scenarios may not fully develop until the early 20's. Interesting stuff.

Pirate Dirge Latest research shows that the part of the brain that handles consequences and projecting out scenarios may not fully develop until the early 20's. Interesting stuff. I recently saw a study where they showed some hundreds of teenagers (ages 13-16) images of people who were giving different facial expressions and then showed the same number of adults. Not a single teenager correctly identified the facial expressions for FEAR. The closest they got was "surprise" but lots of teens identified them as "anger" and "confusion." Some of the adults labled them as surprise and it's all in how someone interprets the facial expressions based on how exact and expressive they are. But I think that was interesting. The study concluded that the teenage brain can not yet even fully reason out expressions and therefore perhaps the emotions behind them. Not being able to reason out emotion seems like a pretty normal teenager trait.

I couldn't date alone until I was 16 either. Not that that did much, since both sets of parents were still really way overprotective. sweatdrop I don't smoke, drink lots or do drugs though, because I know the effect it would have on my body.

linky
The sad thing is that Wisconsin just recently had to pass a law banning people from protesting at funerals of soldiers that die in Iraq. Which the protests actually have very little to do with the war in Iraq. They're saying that our soldiers are dying in Iraq because of the fact that the US is lacking in morals and allowing gay people to be gay. confused
I'm not sure what that has to do with soldiers dying in Iraq, but holding up signs that some one's son is going to hell is just out of line. Especially at a funeral. I mean they're going through enough as it is. I mean they're complaining about people lacking in morals right? What kind of moral person would do that sort of thing?
