Although at the rate he was going maybe they weren't - after all that was his third missed shot in as many minutes.
Briar picked up another balloon and sighed as that balloon hit a bush - make that his fourth missed shot. Mayhaps he was just getting tired - after all he'd been lobbing stuff for quite a while now.

Griffin noticed that Briar was having a bit of trouble hitting things, and flashed him a quick thumbs up as encouragement. He knew how it felt to miss what felt like every single shot. He was doing better now- and tossed one of his sudsy balloons into a crowd, laughing as it broke apart- but what if Briar hadn't come to cheer him up when he was upset? He'd still be sitting on the sidelines sulking.
It would be an excellent time to aim at Briar, but Griffin wasn't about to hit his rival when he was down. That was the coward's way. He wanted to win their challenge fair and square, and win it he would.
Briar's stream of horrible luck continued, with his latest balloon landing up against another bush.
The person who he'd been aiming at had not only noticed that he was the thrower, but had also had better aim and her soapy balloon had hit him right between the shoulder blades.
He gave a small smile at Griffin's thumbs up and reached down for another balloon. It wasn't as big as his earlier smiles, but it was his way of saying that (at least for now) he was going to try and fight the good fight.

Ralph was still grumbling about his luck with the balloon, so he went to find a teacher to hose him off. Maybe if he made sure all this soap and stuff was off his hands and arms he wouldn't drop the balloon on himself again.
Once he was finished he picked up a neon green balloon and looked for a new target. However, lady luck was not on his side as he missed his target.

It had been a while since he'd managed to get a good shot and so Briar had reached the point where he was used to his throws coming out crappy.
Briar had therefore only half-heartedly tossed his latest balloon at the group of people, thinking that the throw would go the same way as the other previous throw.
He had been very surprised therefore after the balloon had ended up hitting one of the kids.

Griffin hadn't taken a break since starting to play- unless one counted his ten minute retirement- and his energy was starting to fade. He was tired, he was achy, and he hadn't had anything to eat or drink in a while. He was almost ready to call it a day. But not just yet. There was something he had to do first.
Well, first he lobbed another bubble-filled balloon at a boy who was running by. Then he could complete his quest. He hoped.
Briar's next throw had been one of those tat for tit ones, his target one of the kids who had tossed confetti at him.
He'd tried revenge during his throwing funk and the balloon had landed up hitting a bush, but given that his last throw had been successful, Briar thought now might be a good time to try again.
This time round the yellow balloon soared like it was meant to and it was quite satisfying when it whapped the other kid in the back.

Griffin loaded up his shirt with more balloons. As many as he could, minus one that he lobbed at a kid who was passing right next to him. That shot was too good to pass up. But now he was ready for the final showdown. He abandoned his base, saluting it before he walked away. It had served him well, but it wasn't going to help him for this next phase of his quest.
There was only one person he wanted to see, and there he was: Briar. His rival. If Griffin was going out, it would only be after they settled things once and for all.
"Three shots from ten paces. Most hits wins." Griffin seemed to be mixing Westerns into his imaginary scenario now, and he held out his shirt so that Briar could stock up on the necessary balloons for this, the battle to end all battles.

Briar had been in the process at tossing his balloon at one of the other kids, but he nodded at 'Griffin's words - epic showdowns were something that rivals were supposed to have after all.
After grabbing three balloons he asked "You first?"
He was pretty sure that in films it was the one who issued the challenge who was the person who took first shot.

Was that the way it worked? In Griffin's mind, the film played out with them both firing at the same time. But this wasn't a shootout, and it made sense for them to take turns. As the one who issued the challenge, he wasn't about to back down. He nodded solemnly, then turned his back and began to walk.
... eight, nine, ten. Once he'd moved the appropriate distance, he turned back around. Ten paces was actually kind of close, but whatever. He took one of his balloons, aimed carefully, and let it fly. When it hit, he watched calmly, even though he was giddy inside. Now this was a real showdown!

Griffin's first shot was a hit - of course it was - Griffin was good at this.
Ignoring the new set of water soaking into his clothes, Briar grabbed the first of his balloons and walked the obligatory 10 paces.
"My turn" he said letting his balloon fly at his rival.
The ball balloon was now back in Griffin's court.

Marisha looked around once more and saw a cute pink balloon. Smiling she picked it up and studied it. It seemed lighter than most and she wasn't sure if it would be a good one to use. However Marisha did think that no balloon should be wasted either. Sighing she bounced the balloon from hand to hand as she tried to decide.
Nodding to herself she finally decided to use it. Looking for a suitable victim, she finally sees what she is looking for. A young boy had just come back from getting a drink and had looked particularly clean considering everything going on. Giving a mischievous grin Marisha readies her balloon. She then tosses it at the boy using an overhanded shot. As she watches the lightweight balloon pop over the boys head she grins. It turned out it was lightweight due to being filled with bubbles! What luck.

Things were off to a great start! Griffin doffed an imaginary cap, as a way of honoring his opponent's skill. They were indeed equally matched. In cases like this, what did it come down to? Energy? Willpower? Luck?
It was harder to aim when Briar was twice as far away. Griffin had trouble accounting for the change in distance, and his next balloon fell short of the mark. It probably got Briar's shoes a bit wetter than they already were, but that was about it. Not a shining example of his best work.
Still, he had one more shot. One more chance to settle things in his favor.
Briar had thought that his next shot was actually a pretty good one, but although the balloon had soared quite nicely in the air, it had ultimately fallen short of its intended target.
To add insult to injury, the balloon hadn't even exploded when it hit the ground - had just fallen with a soft plop.
Two throws down, with one left to go. Griffin had missed his shot too which meant it all rested on this final shot - for both of them.
