Fedora didn't have a chance to hug back, but was startled, just about to hug G8 before she disappeared. She slumped, sliding to the ground with a loud exhale, breathing hard. "That... was really close, Thyme."

She took out her phone, and reached up to hold Thyme's hand with her free one, squeezing for a moment before pressing the button with her thumb.

Fedora disappeared as quickly as Gamma 8 had.

...disappearing into a fine spray of blood. The intercom clicked on, "I did tell you, the only way through the shield is by disrupting it with 5 pendants, the blue ones mind you."

The air in the gym began to hum and flicker a bit and then, "Well, that's that I suppose." The voice didn't come from the intercom but from...the cloaked figure walking toward the lone survivor.

"Not too bad I suppose...will definitely be awhile before these can go ah...live, sadly. You can leave now, or we can have a bit of tea. My assistant prepares a lovely cup, her own mix, even."

(( So I guess this means that it wasn't okay to exit the thread? o_0;;; I am totally confused because this wasn't advertised as a task, I'm really sorry but I'm just really really confused... ))

Rabid: nothing happens ~ except your character no longer has to worry about someone taking control of them
Kanth: as long as your character can ICly exit the gym (it is a task, we just aren't that prone to semantics) then you can choose to enter the final task

[[ I took Kanth's word for it, soooo off I go. Good luck, Chaos.

All in all, a decent way to die for a scaredy-cat. ]

(( Aw, yikes! D: Thank you, Kanth and Rabid, for the interesting times, in this thread and before it. ))

Theta Nine tensed as Gamma Eight lunged toward Fedora, but he breathed a sigh of relief as it turned out to be just a hug. "That... really was," he murmured back to the Delta, ignoring the ringing of his cell phone for now. As he hesitated, he watched Gamma Eight and Fedora both press their cell phone button.

He was still watching, frozen in horror when they disappeared into a fine spray of blood. If he thought the earlier horrors were bad, he decided he was sorely mistaken. The voice sent a sharp jolt running through him, and he wheeled sharply to face the cloaked figure. His hands clenched into white-knuckled fists (or what would have been white-knuckled fists, had his gloves not been in the way) at his sides, but he made no move to attack.

"I wouldn't mind a cup of tea," said Thyme, quite guarded. Liquid anaesthetic might be better, come think of it. "Hard to drink with this gas mask on, though. Your rules, not mine." He was responding on autopilot, really. His words were in no way representative of the keening scream echoing in his mind. Or the questions, always the questions. The three of them had been so close, so close to getting out of this shield thing, and now he was the only one left. Left to what fate, he had to wonder.

His troubled mind snagged on a snippet of the cloaked figure's words, clinging to it like a plank of driftwood in stormy seas. "You said that they would live. Eventually. Why didn't you tell us before?" He shot a bitterly rueful glance around at all the carnage.

Tsking, Dr. H began walking, expecting the other to follow, "Not rules, I don't recall very many rules ever being given for that matter. Just simple advice. It's not against any "rules" to take off your helmet, it's simply...unhealthy. Your current body can't handle this environment without certain protections, so to speak. Nor was it against any rules to try and leave this area without the necessary means...it's just not a very good idea. Case in point." Reaching a wall, he murmured to himself, "...now where it is...ah!" He tapped it briefly, and the floor began to tremble slightly, "Takes a moment, you know, the mechanism got a bit gummed up during that recent pest infestation I had mentioned, but where was I? Oh yes, my despicable character or somesuch! So I was going about telling people that they'll live? Well, if I said that, I am certainly a liar. So I suppose you'll see it how you see it. And since you're well...you, and I am so very much me....well, it's not something I'm terribly worried about, you understand?"

The trembling increased until something began to rise out of the gym floor, it looked a bit like...a glowing blue doorway. "And now you find yourself with one last choice, you may have noticed a text message from one of my ah...esteemed colleagues? I still wouldn't recommend using the phone to get there, but this door will work just as well. You can enter it and deal with his little task, and hope for the best. Or...you can remove the helmet, and...well, I can guarantee you, you'll end up in a place well stocked with many fine beverages."

Thyme walked as Dr. H did. "You and your esteemed colleagues might not have given us rules, but you did give us just enough rope to hang ourselves on. And what, my future body will be able to deal with this?" he returned, just a little dismissive of the latter notion. Perhaps he shouldn't have been, he reflected immediately afterwards. So many things have occurred that ran counter to his expectations. Even this conversation with the mysterious Dr. H -- the same man he had wanted to punch in the face -- wasn't quite going the way he thought it would. Rather than speak further, he stalled, gazing down at the cell phone screen until the glowing door cast its light over him.

Theta Nine moved across to face the door, though he paused a moment to gaze back before stepping through. "No other show in town, is there?" He made a face. "You'll only point out that there are plenty of options. Unhealthy options, perhaps. But I don't intend to take to drink so soon." And he certainly wasn't going to go and explode, which seemed to be a prerequisite. "What is this 'best' I can hope for, anyway?" But really, would knowing this improve his situation? Would having a pendant -- or two, like that Epsilon Thirteen guy -- make a difference? He was starting to regret having fought off the earlier Snuggieman. This Dr. H guy could just be lying, anyway.

"It's a rope you placed around your own neck," Dr. H tutted, walking back toward the portal, and looking the thing up and down. "And likely for what you felt were for very good reasons, or at least...you should hope so. As for the future, hmmm...well, I won't ask you to trust me, but perhaps you should trust yourself a bit more?"

Reaching out to the doorway he began to...rub off a scuff mark, "Really what were the thinking? I bet it was that tonfa brat, this looks like a tonfa mark to me. Tch!" He patted down his cloak for a moment before withdrawing a small notepad and pen, "This is coming out their allowance." After a few moments he seemed to remember that T9 was still there, "Oh, ah! The best? Well, that depends on you now doesn't it? Best is such a highly subjective term, after all. Well, lets say you want peace and quiet? A little time to think? Some time spent not fighting battles that no one will ever celebrate? Not using another being to fight those battles? Well then, just remove your helmet now and save time."

Writing down a few more notes, he continued, "But, if you'd like to be the hero, however much unsung, then hope to become something more. Hope to become the Hunter rather than the prey. Hope to step through The Doorway, pass by both the past and present, and carry on into life as you never knew it."

A rope they placed around their own necks. Behind the gas mask, Theta Nine grit his teeth, all the more so because the guy did have a point. Resolving to trust himself more, he was silent as Dr. H rambled on. Tonfa, huh? Something to investigate later on.

Well, that was that. He always wanted to be something more. That might have been why he ended up here. "I'm too predictable," he drawled out. "If I do survive, I haven't forgotten about that tea." With that, he stepped across the portal.

{ Theta Nine exits, unless there are more explosions to be had. }

"Mmmm, yes. Looking forward to it, best of luck and all such..." Dr. H watched the candidate walk through the door, no explosion or spray of blood to be had, "...utter drivel."

Surveying the damage, the doctor removed his hood with a grim smile. "Such a productive day! Clarice?"

A small, fuzzy voice responded, "Yes sir?"

"My dear, please do find that tonfa brat who was last guarding the town portal. I have a bit of a task for them."

"Very good, sir."

"I'll be in my office gathering the results of this little test, the pendant data can wait. Caed's been a bit high strung lately about finding some worthy candidates, and this should prove illuminating to say the least."

"I'll have your dinner sent to the lab."

Disconnecting, Dr. H returned his attention back to the portal. Moments later, the gym was empty save for the corpses of the fallen and the bloody footprints of those who tried, and most likely failed, to continue on. The scene of tragedy and horror was left for others to clean up, no more than an afterthought to the man who created it.
