As Ari sat in the Pelican, he wondered how actual combat with the covenant would be like, he knew it wasn't going to be easy though. He wished he didn't have to fight at all, he was scared, because he could smell the gruesome stench of war, even from all the way high in the Pelican. He wished he hadn't joined, but he knew that sooner or later, there would be a draft, so he could go willingly, or be dragged in by his feet.

As he was thinking, he got lost in thought, and didn't notice what was going on around him, until he felt, an explosion, felt his face turn hot, and heard men screaming. And when he looked up he found that half of the the back of the pelican had blown off, taking just about half the men sitting in it. Then another shot inevitably hit one of the Pelican's 'wings'. Then the pelican driver said, We're going in for a crash landing, brace yourselves!" And Ari immediately grabbed onto the seat straps, and tried unsuccessfully to plant his feet in the ground, trying to brace himself for the impact.

He closed his eyes, but if he were to leave them open, he would see that the pelican was aiming completely down towards earth, and as it feel men were screaming, and Ari felt tears running down his face, he was crying uncontrollably, then he was thrown out of his seat, outside of the pelican. And he had landed on a few other men from what was left of the pelican. Together they got up, and quickly went to check on the men who were at the pelican controls. They couldn't find anything, because the window at the front, had been smashed by the impact, and the crew had probably been suffocated, or killed immediately from impact, although Ari wished they died neither way, he wished they hadn't died, but they did, he would rather they had a quick death.

After they stayed in remote silence for a couple of moments, Ari had the men sum up the dead, and write down their names, altogether from the pelican they had lost 14 men.... after summing up the dead Ari wasn't sure what was left of the squad should do, they were all privates, and he was a corporal, but he hadn't been trained to lead men, corporals just follow orders, just like privates. But the men had all turned to him, looking at him, waiting for an order, he just didn't know what to tell them. All he knew was that they had to make it to Fox Hole 2, but he didn't even know where that was, and it was too risky to light a beacon, because chances were the covenant would get to them first, and then Ari's eyes widened up as he realized that the covenant were probably coming for them right now.

So Ari looked to his squad and said "The Covenant are on their way to this position right now, we need to get out of here, we will move north, because Foxhole 2 is north, but that's all I know, and hopefully we'll meet up with another group on the way."

"Open the COM to.. Captain Lee," these words called to Shelly as a ball of flame raced through the sky. Leaving dark gray vapor trails in the wake of the metal tin can of a spacecraft, a Pelican.

The channel opened wide, the momentary hiss of static echoing inside his helm. "Captain, you must have seen that Pelican. I'll jump on a recon for them." The Hell Jumper would, he needed a walk, he wanted to get into the fray. Standing he hefted his MA5C Assault Rifle, thirty to rounds of hell. That wasn't all the soldier hefted, a MG6 sidearm, two jackel shields and a pair of fragmentation grenades and yet another of stickies. It was a personal armory, fitted across black battle armor.

He checked his HUD, scrolling through commands sifting through any information, anything pinpointing the crash. Bingo, in the cool of his helmet a map appeared, within a mile sector the Pelican lay. He thought, a few survivors? Maybe five or six, most of the crew and cargo, soldiers, would be dead from the shock or simple impact damage. Gutted and sliced by shrapnel, who knew. If it had been filled with a bunch of ODST's they'd be fine, but that was because they were trained to deal with this s**t. Marines weren't so lucky in their green armor.

Perhaps the Marines were braver then even Winter. He had to give them a thumbs up for being able to deal with the lives they did. Quickly trained and thrown out into the fray to die, cannon fodder, a lucky few living through the first volley of plasma fire to only be hit with the second. A thumbs up to them, the Marines. He'd try to save a few.

Seth looked at Karr and nodded solemnly. The man was more gung-ho than most soldiers, always volunteering. But something rang in Seth's ears, an old phrase-- 'first to charge, first to fall' He prayed this wouldn't be Karr's case. Or any of the others.

"Affirmative." Seth told him, "Just watch yourself in there Karr, proceed with extreme caution." Seth eyed the entrance, "Round up some men and get in there. Stay in radio contact."

Seth glanced at the man again and, nodded.

Anthony gave a smile. "Besides sir, its better my a** look like hamberger meat than yours." And trecked off.

"Doyle, Romney, Marx, Sicarello, in front." He called. The 4 marines came forward.

"Ok, we need to go take a look inside. You 4 are with me. Lets move out." He trecked over to the massive hanger door that was intrenched in the side of the hill.

Anthony had the 3 of them, meaning everyone but Doyle, stay prepaired in a semi-circle around the door. Doyle worked on the panel lock.

"Sir, there is some kind of encryption. I cant get it open. But we can blast it." he called from the pannel. Anthony waved him over. The marine complied, and hustled to the CWO's side, and kneeled with him.

"Ok, so, the door is a lightweight composit, and its easy to break through. Get me some C7 and I can get a door."

Anthony nodded. "McDowell, Vencini, get me some C7!"

((Admonished nonesense, are you heading south? in my direction?))

Ari pulled out his compass, it was old, but it did the job, especially in this situation. The reason he didn't know the exact pin point location of Fox Hole 2 was because he didn't have a holographic map, or any very useful equipment, because for some reason his group was sent in the fray without them. Now he regretted not arguing with the Lt. about it. But he had to live with his choice, and besides, he could have gotten in some trouble if he did argue. After seeing where north was, Ari looked to the rest of the men, altogether, including himself there were 5. He knew there was a strong possibility, that they wouldn't last long, unless they got help, even 1 ODST would help.

Lee saw Winter's name and rank show in the com panel of his HUD as he mapped out the fallen pelican's last broadcasted position. The ODST's words rung through his ears as the Captain was once again impressed by the man's initiative. The priority, though, was getting in Fox Hole 2 and securing their position. And if the reports on the flood were true, he couldn't risk as good a soldier as Winter on something as dangerous as a recon into possibly infested rainforest.

Lee looked around, turning away from Karr and Seth's conversation to look at a group of marines talking around a non deployed machine gun turret. He then quickly wrote up a roster of ten men, Winter's name at the top, and sent it to the ODST.
"Negative, Sergeant. The jungle is possibly infested with hostiles, and I want everyone close enough so help can respond immediately in case of attacks. Form a single-file line spaced a maximum of five meters apart and proceed to the NAV point I'm placing halfway to the pelican. From there, determine whether or not anyone on the pelican made it. If you can't tell, return within the next fifteen minutes. If there are any survivors, deal with it appropriately.
I'm giving you nine marines for this mission. Good luck."

Lee turned back to Seth and Karr, and as the CWO seemed ready to jump into the pits of hell, he heard Karr ask for heavy explosives.
No, Lee thought, we might need those doors for later. It might delay the flood long enough should they discover our position.
The Captain plugged Karr into the command channel and pinged his COM.
"Karr, get some engineers to open that door for you. Asking them to do it just might justify the extra weeks of training we put them through."

Anthony heard the Captain. Disapointment filled his gut, but he still complied.

"Sir, permission to find another way in Sir?" Anthony wanted in there badly.

((Now Winter is.))

Half his wish, he'd except it. "Thank ya sir, see you soon." With that, his order of men he trudged off to find his soon to be green clad comrades. Hopefully equipped nicely but if not, well, he'd deal wouldn't he? That was what he had to do, make do, do without. "We'll see at Fox Hole Two with some more marines." It was time to haul a**. "I'll keep in touch."

COM off, his HUD whirled down as images slowly drifted away, allowing his face plate to be clear of everything except radar and the flash of his map. NAV markers in place, and soldiers heading forward. It only took a moment till they rustled through the overgrown building. Nine of them, green clad, battle worn, and decently armed. Two hefting shotguns, the rest arranged with assault rifles and BR's, they'd work.

"Right.. Your my new mates, we are going to try to find some missing boys. Keep your eyes peeled, lets keep our backs covered and make sure to shoot towards the enemy." He voiced as he collected their names together, filing through each one. Privates for the most part, they'd see some fighting, they weren't rusty either. Worked well for them. Grim older lads, they'd stared into death a few times before. "Lets haul some a** and get to Fox Hole Two." He paused. "Hurrah!"

Grunts of acknowledgment and agreement met his ears, a grin splattering his face as he marched off. The black figure was jogging, but it was more of running. Breaking ground fast, not breaking a stride as he drifted over branches into the edge of the green dense forest. Foliage bending in his wake and even at this speed he was ghostly quiet. The quiet you could only achieve after years of this, certainly Winter was battle hardened. Thirty three and he'd been kicking some Covenant a** since he was sixteen. He'd said he was eighteen. What a lie! It wasn't till years later when he jumped into a black ODST name when he told them he had lied, he was sorry but he wanted to kick some a**. There was just a good laugh all around. He had already become a brother in the ODST. They weren't going to send him away.

[James "Joker" Mitchell]

James sighed and want over all of the weapons they had now. Mitchell new about the flood, he also felt sorry for anything on the wrond end of the artillery they were packing. James pulled a crate of flood lights off of a pelican and got work setting them up.

It wasn't exactly dark it just wasn't all to bright, he figured if he could a light on each possible entrance based off of his knowledge of the flood it would give them an even better advantage. James had rigged six flood lights that were directed at all entrances as he had planned. At least now they would be able to see they're foe.

Lee was slightly surprised by Karr's eagerness to get inside of the base. What could be itching the Chief Warrant Officer so badly that he would want to get in by any means necessary? Lee got a green from the runners he had sent to find engineers, and he hesitated on how to tell Anthony how to take it easy. This was a combat zone, yes, and everybody should be as sharp as they could possibly be, but being so hurried as to scrap one of their strongest barricades wasn't something tactically sound. And Karr was usually one of their best field tacticians.

"Is there something about Fox Hole 2 that bothers you, Warrant Officer?
Anything strange, anything at all?"

The engineers now rushed past Lee, jogging to the thick titanium-A doors with renewed purpose. One of them began giving directions to the other two, and they set up a portable high intensity laser cutter. The acrid smell of burning ozone mingled with the tinge of static now charging the air flooded the Captain's senses as the engineers began to work. A countdown showed up on the HUDs of all the officers in the command channel.
0.0/0.2/3.4/9.7...
0.0/0.2/3.3/4.3...
0.0/0.2/3.2/1.8...

"Only two more minutes, Karr.
Again, I want to know if there's anything bothering you at all."

"Captain..." he held his BR55 by the top grip, "Sir, this place gives me a bad vibe. Being a Tactition, I know when something is bad, and something about this place wants me to just nuke it and move on. I mean, why would the UNSC that were here have left? Its a good stand back point. Atleast leave a skeleton crew to man it..." A scraping sound below him caught his attention.

Below him, an emblem, looking like the emblem of 105th Hell jumper, scorched off of the armor mark on the shoulder. The 5 Bars underneath it ment it was from the 5th company. Fox Company.

Anthony retrived it from the ground and picked it up. Examining it, it had been scorched off the armor. A rare and lucky shot.

"Sir, this is a patch from F-Company, 105th. Look, it's like its been scorched off..." He handed it to the Captain. That piece of armor just peaked his curiosity. It wasn't more the fear of the base, but the curisity of what lay inside for him to find.

"Sir, if you dont mind my saing, I think we should keep this place on alert. That patch there tells me that theses guys were attacked. Meaning the Brutes are probaly not far off. Or whatever happened here-" The door grinded open, the red emergancy lights began to flair onto the pavement as the dark inside was fought back by the light. Inside revieled 2 scoripon tanks, never touched.

"Wish me luck Captain." he said, Saluted and trotted off.

"HEY BUD! Get your gear and lets get a move on." he called to the private. he jogged over to his team, who were now relaxing. "Ok boys, lets go." He called over.

Realy quick before stepping into the dark, he ran to a supply crate, and grabbed an empty rifle rack. He knelt down, and stripped himself of all the Ammo he had gathered and lay it out before him. 23 ammo casings in all, some dent, some scratched, some jammed... most were taped to his armor or back. He set his rifle in the cradle on top, then the BR55, he took 7 ammo casings, taped them to the side of the butt, and retrived a Shotgun from a private next to the crates.

The private looked dissapointed.

"Son, you'll get yer damn shotgun back if nobody touches my s**t..." he said. And walked away.

"Ok boy's..." He loaded the shotgun with one of 18 shells he had. "Lets go." He pushed past his squad, and into the looming dark, not knowing what to find inside the abandoned UNSC stronghold.

"Yes Sir!" Ti packed up his MA5C and loaded his pistol and put it in it's holster. He ran up up to XO Karr and walked into the darkness with the rest of the squad cautiously. "Sir, isn't it weird we find a badge here and 2 perfect tanks and the whole place is deserted?" Ti asked looking around.

Anthony walked along the corridor fortified by pillars and nothing more. He felt along the walls for a light switch.

"Well Bud," He stopped to flick on his headlight. "Its possible this place was under Covenant attack, and they just left those 2 tanks becase they had to come take care of us. I dunno, anything could be the possible."

He found the light switch and yanked it up. The whole hallway behame iluminated with dead corpse's and ammo.

"Gather up boys." He cocked his Shotgun. "We're goin' hunting."

Finally, the door was open and an acrid smell, like dust given a sickly life, moved through the ranks. The reek of rotting and dead rats filled the sweet, clean air (thanks to the fresh glassing), and made Dansmith nearly double over and heave. It was almost the worst smell he'd ever encountered...
Too bad scent is the most potent, best-kept memory the human brain can ever transcribe. This pleasant aroma will be with you for life...
Cheery, aren't you? Just keep us updated on movement, alright, Angel?
Have been for as long as we've been in the area. Motion trackers show nothing, no movement at all, save for rats and sewage lines.
If you say... er, think, so.

Ashton flicked on the light of his BR55, trading out his HE Pistol for an SMG with 6 extra clips, and another 2 frag grenades. Who knew what the old, decrepid outpost held? He moved into the inky black, the darkness swallowed him up as his eyes failed to adjust to the change in light.

"Warrant Officer Karr? Sir? Can you make out anything?..." Just as Ashton's eyes adjusted, he realized what he was walking into: a Scorpion MBT. He tripped over the tread pods, and stumbled loudly in the lessening dark. Regaining himself, he looked at the dusty tank... and at its twin... and realized that neither's hatch had even been opened since their inspection at the Armor Depot.

....Angel, how often is a tank Never used, ever?
When there's millions of trigger-happy Marines defending their home? Never happens, Ashton, unless something's in the mix. Ashton's eyes finally finished adjusting, and he swept the beam from his BR55 around the room, allowing it to glance over every surface...then, he saw it:
A blood-red handprint near the door that lead from their entrance to the main complex. Leading under the door's gap, there was a trail of thick, drying blood that had smears and more hand-prints near the main drag-trail...

"...Uh, sirs? Might want to take a look at this...Looks like the poor b*****d was still alive after he was bleeding, and struggled. Got dragged through this door, see?"
