WIP pictures of the designs for my next tattoo.
It's a neat interpretation. My concern with it is the symmetry. You've got a very detail heavy and band breaking design with the koi, which looks pretty damn good (I do loves my koi). The other side, it doesn't really have the same amount of power. Especially on something this permanent, you want to really make sure it's perfect. I'd tweak the bird a bit (lend something to the background or make the head break the lines more).
Is it just black and white or will it be color?

I think I might have a serious mental problem. Several even, one can argue. Really, I won't deny it. It's only evident by what I decided to draw after I got a new DS game.

I mean, it asked me to type in my name so that the "hero" would be named after me. Things click in my head when I hear that, you know? It didn't help however to find out the lead character is a dude, but I digress.

Keep in mind, I thought it was so cute. Made me think of Paper Mario and I looooooooooooooooooooooooove Paper Mario. Plus the main character is just too adorable.

I mean it was bad enough I only bought the game so I could get the "exclusive" cards from the DS Download Station at my store.

Well I'm very glad you like the koi because it's quite intimidating to be designing an original tattoo using a koi fish.

The phoenix side isn't honestly complete. I basically just ran with my original sketch because I was so happy with the koi that I wanted to have a working model of the whole thing to show, and you've nailed everything that needs fixing from what I can tell.

The whole design is built around duality and has the same basic visual flow as a yin yang, or at least it will when complete. The koi half- aside from the traditional usage of a koi in a tattoo- represents the water element, which in turn is generally associated with the female principle in my belief system. The phoenix is the fire/male side.

So when I redraw the phoenix's head to come out of the bands further, I hope to get the visual flow to arc over and down to the center line of the koi's body, if that makes sense.

I'm having trouble figuring out a background for the phoenix, which is really bugging me. Suggestions are very appreciated.

Also, the tattoo will be full colour, but I'm not sure what I want for a colour scheme yet.

As for suggestions for the Phoenix bit...well, you have the Koi in its natural enviroment, and I was going to suggest likewise for the bird, but besides the sky there's not much to go on.

I'm curious to see what the phoenix will look like on completion. I couldn't really suggest a background for it except perhaps something that mimics the design of the lines.
With the koi you have a very elegant, flowing fish with some intricate scale pattens, and it's mimiced in the lotus flowers and their stamens. For the phoenix I would say to play up the repeating feather bands. There's the stereotypical fire background, but if you wanted to play with the floral aspect I would recommend tiger lilies or something with vines. Something where you could toy with longer, sharper shapes. What's nice is that because the feathers themselves are already so strong, you wouldn't need to create too detailed a background, just something to give it more pop.
I'm aware that those are both more Europeon imagery than Japanese, but I'm sure there's something similar you could find if they're too far away from this particular imagery for you.
The upshot of the lilies is that they would play perfectly into a warm color scheme, whether you had them in white or flames.

Actually that's a nice idea. You could use the swirl patterns of clouds, there's some really gorgeous stuff in the sky to be found in Japanese scrolls. It'd lend some punch to it without detracting from the bird itself, and you could stretch them out a little to make them fit with the line types.

I'd say for color scheme to just play in photoshop for a few hours painting with broad strokes. You can come up with some spectacularly weird but inspiring stuff that way.

Tiger lilies! I like this idea very much. The only downside is that the koi half is very rigidly symbolic and is derived from a Chinese legend of the koi that swam up the Yellow River and became a water dragon, while the phoenix isn't symbolic of much more than the usual connotations. I'll play with those suggestions though, and I can't say I'm worried at all about mixing the phoenix with non eastern flowers. The clouds are a nice touch as well.
