Fortified by the snack, Briar felt ready to head back into the fray.
Hi s balloon, unfortunately wasn't where he'd left it (no doubt having been snagged up to be used as some other kid's ammo), but there were still quite a few balloons around.
He lobbed a green balloon in the direction of a few kids, the laughing shriek suggesting that he had managed to successfully hit someone, then he decided to go see what his rival was doing since it had been a bit of a while since they'd crossed swords balloons.

Marisha pushed herself out of the mud and looked down at her muddy clothes and grinned. She was having a lot of fun and she could no longer bring herself to care what her mother would think about the dress. Taking a quick glance around she spotted another balloon. Grabbing it up she randomly threw it at another child passing by. Marisha watched as it flew and hit the boy before grinning and looking for more ammo.

He hadn't seen Griffin as he made his way across the field, although was pretty sure he'd managed to land a hit on another kid with the orange water balloon he'd picked up and tossed in the direction of a group of kids.
After dodging some confetti and a couple balloons Briar thought about checking by the other boy's balloon fort.
He saw another kid heading over in his direction, he'd have to check by Griffin's bin fort later - first he had a balloon to try and avoid.

The sudsy water tubs were relatively quiet as Briar passed by them, with most of kids appearing at this stage appearing to opt for the balloons.
Pausing by the closest one, Briar noticed that there was still a fair deal of the sudsy water mixture inside and it seemed a shame to just leave it there going to waste.
So Briar lingered for long enough to send some bubbles in the direction of some of the kids running by.
He was pretty sure that he’d managed to hit someone too by the time he finally moved on.

At this point, Griffin figured it was probably better to stay standing while he threw his next slew of balloons. He couldn't use his bin as cover that way, but he didn't want to end up cornered like he had been before. Besides, it felt good to move around again, now that the stiffness and soreness was easing away.
The shift in position threw his aim off, though. Used to throwing high, his next balloon landed in the branches of a tree.
Picking up a big bright yellow balloon, Derek debated who to throw it at. There were so many options... Briar. Ralph. Griffin... Trev. Oh no wait. he was on a truce with with Trev. Right right. So someone else. So rather then picking someone, Derek just threw it into a mass of kids. It was bound to hit someone. It did, but he couldn't tell who.
Ralph hand been looking for a new target, after getting pelted in the back with another balloon from Briar he grinned. That didn't look like a good grin either, like Ralph was up to something but instead of lobbing the balloon at Briar, he went after someone else.

The side effect of sending bubbles at people was that the soap made hands slippery as Briar found out when he picked up a green balloon and tried to throw it in the direction of one of the kids running around.
The balloon slid about in his hands when he attempted to throw it and it had ended up with a sad plop not that far in front of him.
It could have been worse though – he’d been spared the embarrassment of having the balloon break on top of him.

It took a couple of tries for Griffin to get back in his groove. It was inevitable that he'd start hitting things again, though. He was a lean, mean, water-balloon-throwing machine, and nobody and nothing could stop him!
Was he really the same kid who'd tried to give up not all that long ago? Griffin thought about that for a moment. Then he shrugged and tossed his baloon into the crowd, cheering when it hit someone. He could get all sappy and reflective later, but now he had better things to do!

Ralph was walking again around the yard, he was looking for someone he might not have attempted to hit yet when he saw them. A smile came across his face, a pale green haired boy he hadn't tried to hit yet, he picked up a yellow balloon and lobbed it at the boy.
... Well okay Ralph thought he lobbed it at the boy instead the balloon slipped right out of his hand and landed on his head, and sat there for a second before *pop* he was drowned. Spluttering Ralph started muttering something before finally finishing with "Stupid Balloon."

His next throw wasn't any better than the previous one and in the end Briar decided that it might be a good idea to take some time out and wash the soap off his hands.
He got about half way there when some kid's balloon whapped him in the back of his top.
Briar hesitated for a moment, torn between washing his hands and getting whoever the kid had been back, but in the end washing his hands (narrowly) won out - he'd seek revenge once he finished getting the soap off his hands.

Overcompensating for his earlier gaffe, Griffin's next throw went way too low, rolling across the ground like he was bowling. Which would have been fine if it had managed to hit anyone's feet, but instead everyone stepped over or around it. Griffin smacked his head in frustration and bent down to fish more balloons out of his bin. It was taking him longer to get back in his "groove" than he liked, but that was still preferable to sulking on the sidelines.
Not that washing his hands off seemed to have made much difference given that the first balloon that Briar had tried tossing on his return to the field had ended up sliding straight into a tree trunk.
He told himself that the important thing was to make sure that come final count that he’d outhit Kevin and Briar thought that he might be in with a fair chance – he’d certainly working hard towards that end at any rate.
But it was hard to keep positive when he saw Kevin hit two people in rapid succession with his balloons and even more so when the other boy had a big grin that suggested that he was doing really, really well.
Bending down Briar scooped up a purple balloon – he’d just have to try harder – those cookies were going to be his.

Not too high. Not too low. Juuuust right. For a moment, Griffin felt like Goldilocks from The Three Bears, trying everything until something was perfect. But it was a good strategy- his next balloon hit a girl right in the knees. For a moment it looked like she was going to trip, and Griffin froze, wondering if he should go help. Then she regained her balance, and he let out a sigh of relief. This game could be dangerous, even when you were careful. But it was still so much fun!
