This was getting ridiculous.
Madeline forced herself to sprint another set of stairs, her breath coming out labored and her lungs like fire in her chest. It was annoying to be a fragment of something and still feel pain.
She was seriously beginning to consider whether their creator was a sadist, or simply an idiot.
Or maybe both.

Breathing hard, he paused again, leaning on Saliva as she stopped and let him breath slowly against her. Despite it all, he still felt he could trust her, and he squeezed her hands as he took a moment to keep his short breathes from making him faint.
He remembered the black pillar calling him weak, and he looked up before he moved on, despite his aching legs and chest, to go up the steps.

Her silent march continued on, what had once seemed so peaceful back when she first entered the ruins of the silver kingdom was now insulting, annoying mockery that the Voice put in place to stop them or deter them. It was worthless and pointless.
Finally she reached the top of the steps the final door between her and the Voice or whatever it was.
Sacrifice all you see?
She sneered, a coward, the Voice wouldn't even face them with the decency of letting them see what they sought. Pressing her boot to the door she kicked it, and the darkness rushed forward to swallow all that she could see.
She would see no family in this room, she could only hope she would somehow still find the truth.

She had seen it, how real this place was to the figments created by this voice, but she and the others she cared about did not belong here. She was not a lieutenant to a vegas king in a glowing blue city, loved by some and feared by others simply for knowing the right people; she was a Hunter, a Mist Hunter, and she was damn good one. She was strong, fierce, independent, self-reliant. She could do this. Candace was okay not existing in this world. She much preferred reality. The climb was getting annoying, but she needed to press on, no matter the lack of sound, no matter how long it might take. They had been tasked. ANd a horsemen did not fail.

What had been sadness with every step he took, every word that ******** voice whispered into his mind transformed into something more twisted and angry. He started taking steps two at a time, Tracey looking relieved as he matched his pace.

He noticed others passing, moving up with the swarm that was being called, and in that he spotted Red farther ahead.
His red eyes locked on, and he pressed with more vigor than before, digging his nails into Saliva's arm as he urged his pace to a quicker tempo.

Even when the Voice deemed it necessary to spill its monologue over the silence like a preacher at an empty chapel, the fragment ignored it, continuing her fast pace even though she was about to rip the lungs from her chest and throw them down the stairwell for how badly they ached. <********>
