Martial arts.
Supposedly, rock paper scissors (jan ken po) was (according to several works of fiction I've recently read/watched) a stealthy way to spread the teachings of martial arts (like kenpou). Martial arts were originally looked down upon in Japan because they could be taught to anyone, and they gave skill to warriors who did not follow the Way of the Sword (bushido). Samurai supposedly killed some blatant practitioners.
But that's all rumor from history so old it's hard to verify. *shrug*
