Sophie blinked and stood up straight. "I am? Oh gosh! I'm so sorry, Tamryn!" she said, bowing her head. "Gosh, I'll go read my new book and leave you be for a bit." Then she walked to a different part of the grass, and started to read her tome.

"No you're not," said Tamryn, shaking her head a little as she watched Sophie walk away to read her book. So she continued to lay in the grass, sighing a little to herself as she gazed up at the clouds through the tree branches.

Laurent hopped off the log and walked over to Tamryn, hovering over her. "You like her, don't you?" he asked quietly, so Sophie wouldn't hear.

Tamryn looked up at Laurent from her place in the grass, "I don't know what you mean."

"Yes you do." he said, laying on the grass near her. "I'm not as dumb as I was before, you know. I learn things quickly." Then he looked back at her. "So, if you do like her, why don't you tell her?"

She watched him cautiously a moment, before brushing some of her hair from her face. "It would be inappropriate."

"Why? 'Cause you're both girls?" he asked, tilting his head. Then he paused, and added, "If it bugs you, you could always date me." He smiled sincerely over at her.

Tamryn blinked, rolling onto her side to look at him, "Date you? So you do have a crush on me." She seemed pleased to be able to dodge the question.

"Well, yeah. Who wouldn't? You're smart, pretty, and damn good with a sword." he said, as though it were obvious. He looked over at Sophie, then sighed. "But, if you like her, I guess I have no competition... All I ever had was magic, and now I can't even use it... I'm just a waste of an existence..."

Tamryn sat up, looking at him funny. "Now what are you talking about? You think you're not good enough? Is that what you think?" She frowned a little at Laurent.

Laurent blinked and looked up at her. "Well...Yeah. Novice mages are more useful than me. All I do is study magic...I can't actually do anything with that knowledge, though...if I do, I age rapidly..." he said, looking away. "I'm not that attractive, either...and I'm really annoying."

"Whenever I go to a mage guild and ask to look at the advanced spells, they always laugh and tell me to play with a fireball for starters..." he said, glancing over at her. "And when I ask girls on a date, they think I'm some sort of loon."
