Ami, knowing full well that the portals were only open for missions, began looking for her own devices within the sand. She'd heard a few stories about people coming back with useful objects, so why not give it a try.

Ami found in the sand a flag of England. Well it certainly wasn't useful, but she did love most things English. It would make a cute decoration on her desk or something. Sure.
