Lore smiled brigthly as he waved a bit, "Good morning Starr... Storm."

He was sure whatever it was, it couldn't have been bad, at least he hoped now that recalled the thread incident from yesterday.

"And don't be too quick to deny," Lore told Storm seriously, "What was so interesting?"
PostPosted: Thu Aug 23, 2007 8:19 pm

"Nothing," Storm said again, his face turning even redder as he did his best to avoid direct eye contact with Lore.

Starr on the other hand looked pleased at Lore's question. "Come see, Papa!" she giggled, beckoning for him to come join them. "It's pretty!"

Between them, growing from a tiny crack in the floor, was a flower: a single stem with three buds, one yellow, one pink, and one purple.

"See?" she said excitedly. "Pretty!"

"It is very pretty," Lore nodded with a small smile, "How did that flower begin growing there, it seems kind of stuffy inside for a flower to grow."

He already had an idea, but he wasn't going to say anything until they did.

Starr's eyes brightened until they were nearly pure white. "See?" she grinned, poking Storm in the middle of his back. "I told you we wouldn't get in trouble!"

Storm's face cooled and returned to its usual hue, and he turned and stuck his tongue out at Starr. "Well we did yesterday!" he replied in a surly tone, crossing his arms and sitting indian-style on the floor.

Starr stuck her tongue out at him, too, then grinned up at Lore. "I felt it!" she told him proudly. "I felt it was there and I made it grow! Storm said not to, he said we would get in trouble, but I told him we wouldn't! Because making a flower grow is a good thing! Right? Not like making it rain or windy or a twirly rain!"

She smiled up at Lore proudly, her entire face glowing with pride.

Lore sighed and smiled a bit not wanting to put Starr down, their gift was a good gift to encourage. All gifts were, but he really should... he petted her on the head.

"It's very well done, but you must be careful," he warned her, "Plants... one of their natural uses is to break things down. Plants can be very strong creatures though most people forget that."

Perhaps he thought it was wise to educate them about nature, he thought. They needed to know the causes and effect of their magic.

"Yes, it's a good bit of magic though..."

Starr was pleased that Lore thought it was a good bit of magic, but she was confused by what he had said first.

"What do you mean?" she asked, her glow fading, her brow furrowing slightly with confusion. "Flowers are pretty, how can they break things?"

"I told you you would get in trouble," Storm said again, sticking his tongue out at her.

"Their roots," Lore explained as he motioned for Storm to hush for a moment, "When a plant grows they send out these little tendrils called roots that they used to take in water and other minerals," he paused, "But because roots are small at first, they can get into cracks, and as they grow bigger they make cracks bigger over time. That's how they break things down," he petted the flower, "What if the flower was bigger type, like one that has vines that climb? They would spread very quickly in a couple of years."

And while nice at the side of a wall, he was sure that Ulani and Ulrich didn't need to deal with their house breaking down three or four decades from now.

"Nature has a system," Lore told the twins seriously, "Every time you use magic that deals with nature you're doing something to that system."

"I don't get it," Storm muttered, looking at the flower darkly.

Starr looked up at Lore, her eyes growing wide with surprise, then fear. "You mean the flower's going to break the house?" she asked, her tone frightened. "And it's all my fault?"

She looked as though she was going to burst into tears, and indeed her eyes were misting over.

"One little flower isn't going to break the house," Lore replied picking Starr up and hugging her, "It'll probably fade away, inside of houses don't agree with plants most of the time," he commented, "At least not without care. The point is," he looked between Storm and Starr, "While you should be allowed to practice your gift, you need to do so with an adult who knows magic watching, and you need to be aware that everything you do will have a consquence that might not be good whether you mean it or not."

Starr hugged Lore back as well as she could, though of course she couldn't reach even halfway around his back, so it was more like she was just melting herself into his chest. "Will you help us, Papa?" she asked hopefully, her tiny fists clutching his robes. "Will you teach us all about magic?"

Storm brightened, and he nodded agreement with Starr, their little argument completely forgotten now. "Please, Papa?" he asked eagerly, jumping to his feet and leaning on Lore. "Will you? You know so much about it!"

"I don't know that much about it, about nature yes, I can teach you that, but..." he hated to say this, but without practical use he couldn't really help them, "I can't help with magic itself. I only have minor magic and it's very limited."
PostPosted: Thu Aug 23, 2007 10:11 pm

The twins were crushed, and their faces showed it.

"But Papa!" Storm protested.

"You know everything!" Starr finished for him, looking up at him.

"And who else-"

"-could teach us?"

"We don't-"

"-know anyone-"

"-who could teach us-"

"-all about everything-"

"-like you do!"

The twins looked up at Lore expectantly, hoping that their pleading would pay off.

Lore laughed softly, "No one, can no everything... well.. at least not at my age," he supposed there were immortals that did bother to know everything, but that was difficult, "And... there are teachers of magic... I do recall your grandmother owning such a school."

He only knew that because soemtimes some of the students did come to the library.
PostPosted: Thu Aug 23, 2007 10:40 pm

"Well, yes," Storm replied, nodding.

"But we're not big enough to go," Starr finished for him.

"And we don't know when we're going to grow-"

"-so it would be better if we learned how to use it before we even go to school, right?"

It was only logic, after all.

"Well, you could ask for a special teacher from your grandmother," Lore ventured, "Afterall it's just because you're physically small, not that you don't understand."

Which was true for him, he found Seconds a very capable race of learning, the only thing that held them back was their lack of size.
