in videogames, shields are far too strong. notice that in one shot, an x-wing can be disabled or destroyed (see: ANH, ROTJ)
in videogames, an x-wing can take many a beatings.

depends on the power of the laser that hit it and how much damage said x-wing took before it got vaped. but the real reason for video game shields being so thick is because its not too much fun if two bolts or so is all it takes to shoot you down. they're not going for much realism as much as they're trying to get people to keep playing the game.

Plus, in ANH, they didnt' have anywhere to maneuver. So you could peg them repeatedly with no problem.
And you never played the rouge squadron games on ace mode, did you? you die much quicker.
And you have never played any of the old NES games ever? those games were so real one hit killed you, and you got hit no matter which action you took.
