Basyl was always tired. Whenever he felt the siren call of sleep beckoning to him, he shook it off. This was a nightly occurrence. He couldn't afford to take breaks. He couldn't afford to rest. He only had a year of med school left! Slacking now would be madness. So feeling exhausted was barely anything worth registering as 'odd' on his radar.
He smashed the heels of his palms into his eyes, rubbing circles against them as if that would help him refocus his attention on the too-bright laptop before him.
If he didn't finish the research for his rounds tomorrow, he'd look like an idiot in front of his class- and his potential employers. Everyone said 'not knowing an answer' was part of learning and nothing to be ashamed of, but it was absolutely not fine! Basyl didn't want to not know things when someone else did. He didn't want to be that guy... But he was so tired. He blearily glanced to the clock in the bottom of his screen, only to see that it was well after midnight. He'd have to be awake in five hours...
Maybe if he just closed his eyes for a minute, his mind would stop repeating how tired it was and start getting back to work. Leaving his laptop open on his chest, Basyl leaned his head back against the pillows of his bed.
Yeah, yeah. He'd heard how helpful it was to do all your work at a desk, and he usually did, but there was only so long he could sit there...
Sleep gripped at him and pulled him under faster than Basyl would've thought possible. Except it almost didn't feel like he was sleeping at all. It felt like he was back at the hospital, going through his rounds and trying his best to answer whatever questions his attending posed. There were other students around, of course, but they were just faceless apparitions in this environment. When the next question was posed, Basyl's mind drew a complete blank. He gawked openly, jaw working as if to say something, anything! But now sound came out.
The dread and humiliation that he so feared gnawed at him, turning his belly into a pit of churning emotions that sucked him down, down- He was actually going down!
An alarmed warble of a sound escaped his lips as Basyl's arms scrambled to grab at anything that may act as some kind of purchase as he was pitched down the length of a deep ravine. But there was nothing to grab on to. There was only this chasm. Panic made him screech, but he landed painlessly, in a heap of scrawny limbs still flailing about in a tizzy.
The crisp sound of a throat being cleared made him look up, and Basyl spotted some kind of... opalescent figure like nothing he'd ever seen before.
Abashment tinted his cheeks pink. Someone had seen- But the figure didn't seem concerned about that. It only looked upon him apologetically, and maybe slightly pitying. "It- ah. Hi," Basyl started, as he picked himself up off the ground. "This is, um. It's an odd place you got here- H-hey, you don't have to look at me like that, you know."
The figure's expression shifted. It looked like she'd hatched some kind of idea that Basyl wasn't sure he wanted to be part of.
But she didn't ask his opinion on the matter. Instead, she smiled and produced a handful of glitter from her shimmery starlit cloak, and with a bit of a smile, she tossed it into the air. Though Basyl was, admittedly, confused by the action, it only took a second to see that the glitter had formed some kind of pathway up and out of the chasm. It sparkled and glistened, as if encouraging him.
Stairs.
A groan fell from his lips, and he scrubbed at his eyes. "I can't climb all that way," he tried to reason with the figure. "I'm already exhausted. I'll never make it!" But they both knew there was nothing else she could do to help him. Basyl considered the merits of just waiting to wake up, but this felt uncannily strange. He'd felt himself falling, and the figure seemed more lifelike than any of the students in his dream.
"Okay, okay..." He grumbled in defeat. "I might as well try..."
Basyl had been nervous. There were so many stairs, and they reached such a great height. Even just the time it would take was surely beyond him, but he climbed and climbed. His body, blessedly, never gave out and it felt as if it didn't take as long as it might've.
When he reached the top, his lashes fluttered open to see his ceiling above him, his laptop dark but still sitting on his chest, and his bedroom lights still on. The sky outside was still dark, and he checked the time fearfully, worried that he'd overslept.
But... no. Everything seemed fine. The only indication of abnormality was a bottle of glitter on his nightstand.
