Warren to his seat and looked around at the passengers. A lot of Able was missing and this was the first time he thought about how many of them died. Guess he had a new reason to go the ceremony being held on earth, he was sure these marines name's would be there.

Dansmith sighed in his seat, relaxing his muscles, letting his mind wander... He was alone in his mind, peace at last...
But then, a memory hit him: in the confusion, he had almost forgotted Angel was there, in his head!
"Angel?'
Yes, Dansmith?
"Yes, Lance Corporal?"
...Ashton knew he didn't just imagine that she said his name twice, but it took him a few moments to figure out why.
The Angel fragment in his head was here, as was the original Angel. Oh, man. This aught to make for one helluva conversation...

"Fragment-Angel, I mean. You all good? Still in one piece?"
Her icey-cool and slightly sarcastic "voice" wafted through his mind, less words than simple understanding of meaning.
Yes, Dansmith, though that's a rather ignorant question. If I wasn't in one piece, you wouldn't be in one piece. Until you can un-burn me from your brain, a task I would leave to no one less advanced than the Forerunners, though they're unavailable, it looks like we're stuck.
"Great... well, just keep busy. I still remember what you said about being bored."

A few of the soldiers glanced at him with odd looks as he
seemingly talked to himself. Smiling sheepishly, he tapped his temple, explaining,
"My imaginary friend. Don't mind us."
The soldiers slowly nodded, the type of nod you gave someone who was clearly a few rounds short of a full magazine.

"You guys just wish you had someone who talked to you endlessly."
I'm sure that's it, Lance Corporal. Must be. She said sarcastically.

Lipton fired the Nonlinear Rifle until its charge was consumed. He watched with joy as an enormous floating machine erupted into a beautiful firework display of broken metal and exposed wiring. The hulking form came crashing to the floor with a resounding explosion that made him whoop in victorious jubilation. He pumped his fist in the air once then fell back to the IIC when Hammer gave the signal. Lipton put the Nonlinear Rifle away and began to help as many of the survivors onto the IIC as he could. The number of Spartans was amazing, and he knew that they hadn't come from the Monterey. They were members of Blue team, the ones that disappeared during the first battle of Earth. Dr. Halsey was also supposed to be dead. Of course, he wasn't going to question providence.

The Major waited until everyone was aboard before climbing into the back of the craft himself. Fortunately Hammer closed the rear hatch just as he came aboard. Lipton watched the Sentinels as the IIC shot out of the bay. They just sat there. He sighed and took off his helmet. He really didn't want to have to write the report for this flaming ball of s**t, but he'd probably get stuck with it. That, or debriefing all the traumatized kids who had just gone through hell. He had to smile though, they had made the pickup and they had gotten their men out.

Seth kept rounding up Marines, paying little mind to the explosions and weapons fire--but always keeping an eye out for a sentinel who had its eye on him.
He was good at focusing keeping his head on his shoulders. The weapons fire seemed to dull down in background noise. Seth gathered up several more scattered Marines sending them to the IIC and then he himself journeyed back.

It was only his focus that kept him from fully witnessing the horror of the carnage around him. bodies, horribly burned disfigured beyond recognition. Seth scooped up and tore off dogtags, many of which had been melted onto the bodies themselves. Some were lying, scattered by themselves whomever they belonged to was no where to be seen.

Most would have wondered about this, but Seth just kept on his work, sending back Marines and collecting Tags, all very quickly, keeping an eye out for enemy movement.

Finally Seth retured to the IIC himself-- one of the last to do so.
As he entered the craft he heard a radio message from Karr. Sitting himself down, Seth sighed and responded, "Not all Karr." He said feeling a bitter bitter taste flood his mouth, he kept trying to avoid thinking about the dead Marines, he kept his focus.

"Captain," He addressed Lee on a command channel, "We're good to go."

Just after he said that the craft began to lift on it's own. Seth let out a shuddering breath and felt his body shake once, something that relieved tension. Something was wrong.
Looking over to his left shoulder Seth grimaced. It was charred, a dark black. He couldn't feel it, or move it.
When did that happen?
He said nothing, they'd tend to it back on the Monterey

Seth sat there silently, sitting packed tightly next to Marines who's names he did not know, but who had survived what most hadn't. He sat there among strangers, but champions.
In the relative momentary silence, his left leg began to twitch. Old habits died hard.

The Sergeant looked up at the Lieutenant. And with a grim smile, he said, "Looks like you have burial duty this time Lietuenant."

He scratched his head. "How many?"
PostPosted: Sat Feb 09, 2008 1:59 pm

Seth closed his eyes briefly and shook his head with a strange far-off smile on his face, "Too many Karr," He didn't know the death toll, but there were a lot of bodies, and his pockets were full of tags. Seth shook one of his cargo pockets which produced the mass jingle of metal on metal. The pocket was full completely.
Seth felt a kind of grim setting come over him. He'd not let his mind wander onto what had happened. Seth just prayed it was a smooth flight.

Warren could see some people were starting to open up conversations and such, but Warren decided to take this chance a reflect on the mission and how it was nearly a complete failure. He found himself thinking about the odd feeling that was telling him to find that computer, that put his body threw a blender. In the fire fight he completely forgot about his body and pain began to leak into him. He thought of Ashton for some help, but he looked over at the marine, he was just as bad condition and was talking to himself. He decided to let Ashton be and figured he would talk to him after the ship was safely in slip space. Warren found himself with his eye's closed and drifting into sleep.

He was reading threw the information copied into his brain from the terminal that he touched and it was quite fascinating. They seemed to be logs by a man known as Chemis, or C for short. He opened what he figured was the first log.

I've been working on our latest medical break through in tissue regeneration and we seem to be successful, but the side effects are unacceptable, and any subjects we inject with this new vaccine seem to lose there evolved mind and go back to primitive thoughts, also there body becomes very mutated. So vaccine #0236 has failed and we will begin work on vaccine's #0237-0278 soon. I'm starting to lose hope and I would not mind a vacation soon, but the work must be finished. As for the failed subjects will be put into containment on the installations 001-007. Chemis logging off.

Karr looked at his CO with almost glazed eyes. "Dosen't feel good to have the souls of the men tugging at your chest for their identity back does it?" His voice was calm and smooth.

Seth sat there allowing the silence to settle in properly. After Karr spoke there was a kind of suspended feeling. The man himself had gone through this.
Seth could feel the welling up inside his chest, the contortion of his face in horror and illness as he began to reflect.
But he concentrated, thinking hard on the floor his eyes rested on, his boots were scuffed, a bit singed, he'd have to get repairs done to his armor, it wouldn't look like they'd come off easy. His shoulder wound in itself would require some grafting, not something he looked forward to.

Through this thought Seth distracted himself from the thoughts that would truly plague him.

In a disconnected, dissonant voice Seth responded, "No." He gave half a pause and continued, his voice was absolute and solid, "But they'll do their job, and I'll do mine." It was a bit cryptic, but Seth's words could have been made clearer if one observed his hand that was absently stroking his pocket filled with dogtags being forced to rest on his lap.
Beyond that they were filled with a more personal sentiment.

Seth had dealt with a lot of death before, and he had learned how to keep his head and let the emotions, and the breakdown hit him later, while he was off duty, in his bunk--Or alone. As things stood these Marines, these survivors didn't need to see their LT throwing a fit half way through their evacuation.

Seth's voice was tired sounding, not weak but tired, "How're you holding up Karr? You intact?" It wasn't avoidance, but legitimate concern. The feelings in regards to the fallen Marines had been made clear, via silence and thought. Seth didn't have time to mourn, none of them did, not yet.
Maybe, not for a long time.

Anthony gave a weak grin, and patted the seat next to him. "Take a seat Lieutenant. You look like a s**t pile... No offence sir."
He scratched the top of his head. "Sir, I'm alright."

For a moment, he paused, and moved his gaze to the floor. "Lieutenant, We're going to need more men. And I know we cannot take another confruntation without solid tactitioning." He paused again, but looked back at the CO.
"Sir, with your permission, I would like to bring together a plan for the returning to Earth. I understand as XO, it is not my duty, but I was hoping my tactitionary skills have proved themselves in this battle."

Seth took a seat next to Karr, his feet felt unsteady, his movements were ginger.
Seth thought about what Karr said for a moment, nodding at his comment on his skills in battle, then responded, "Make the plan Sergeant. But it's not up to me." Seth looked significantly at the cockpit of the IIC, "It's up to the Commander."

He nodded. "Yes sir. I knew that. But I know damned well he wont accept it if I ask him. Now, if you recommend me... something could happen."

Seth assented with a casual nod, "Get a plan together Sergeant, we'll talk after the debriefing on the Monterey." Seth paused, the conversation was doing a good job at distracting from whatever aches and pains would plague him, both mentally and physically, "If it's solid, you'll have my full support Karr. I'll recommend it to him myself if need be."

Light continued to diffuse at the edges of the IIC's ESCM fields, the oval shape of the invisibility field slipping quickly out from between the cracks of an immense forerunner arch. As if a gate were closing with their departure, the installation shrank suddenly in size until only part of it was now visible, seeming like nothing more than a normal-sized space station. Those who were aboard the IIC, however, knew that the image they saw was nothing more than the entrance to a complex so immense that humanity would take centuries to finish studying it.
If they ever decided to return.

For now, though, the IIC eased back into pelican bay 6, it's uncloaking form turning the heads of every mechanic that had and hadn't been given the chance to work on it. Marines gawked in admiration as the craft landed without so much as a sound, it's support struts fully silenced by advanced liquid crystal cushioning systems. There was a reason why it was probably worth more than the entire Monterey, and better suited to fighting the covenant. It was damn sweet.

The hatch at the back of the IIC slowly opened, with nothing more than the hiss of equalizing cabin pressures, and crews of medical staff immediately began swarming those that staggered wearily from the ship's troop bay.

The XO of Able stood up after the pressure in the doors releaced, and the light of the Pelican bay flooded over the remaning inhabitants of Able Company, 301st Strike Division.

"Lieutenant; if I have your permission, I would like to accompany you to to the briefing room. Its my job as XO to deliver the losses, so I best do my job."
