Rap is the most subjective form of music, it is not regulated at all. Basically if you have the ability to rhyme words at all(Dr. Seuss and up) you can be considered a rapper. Proper grammar is optional, creativity is frowned upon by some(record labels not allowing cats to stretch out and try new things) and the casual music listener only gets to hear a small fraction of the genre. Because of that people assume everyone involved does the exact same thing.
Such assumptions are asinine as it isn't true for any form of music. It's like if someone walked up and told me I shouldn't listen to "white boy music"(that always cracks me up) and said Soundgarden was just like Panic at the Disco because they are both Rock bands. As someone who could give a s**t less of what everyone else likes in any media outlet, I don't allow such comments to bother me. I look past the bullshit in the mainstream and underground to find quality songs.
I notice that to some rock fans, it seems like the cool thing to do. Going off on a tangent about why they feel the genre sucks, or how "you can't spell crap without rap". Not too sure if this has anything to do with race, just seems like jealousy. Rock is no longer THE popular genre. You are more likely to see and hear people spouting quotables and dressing like their favorite rap artist than the members of a band.
I may sound off-base with my jealousy comment, but there are people who take much value into what others like. They go out of their way to illustrate why so and so is a visionary, and why you should worship the ground they walk on. If not jealousy, it could be a simple case of the most popular music taking the heat for influencing children negatively
Kids tend to emulate everything they see and hear. So the argument of rap being a bad influence isn't too far off. None of these cats are trying to be anyone's role model, they are out here get the money. Nothing more, nothing less. If someone is all about being in the club with big arsed broads dropping it, don't expect them to change the subject matter just because little eight year old Timmy is listening to it or watching the music video.
I believe all the parents that like to point fingers at violence on television and suggestive themes in games and music should make an effort to act like a parent. Take responsibility and do something like blocking channels you don't want them to watch on television for example. Not everything is this world is kid friendly, its your job to shield them from certain things till they are at an age where they can handle it.
The fact is, these rappers are making music they know will get sales. Cats that complain about the likes of K-os, Immortal Technique, etc not getting heard, blame the majority! Thing is, not everybody can get into deep thought provoking lyrics because they they are not catchy enough. Most people have very short attention spans, also, they May just like music that has a good rhythm. Their M.O. just may be dancing instead of thinking.
At any rate, it would be great if people in general attempted to look beyond the surface. With so many different sounds in every genre, you are bound to find SOMETHING that suits your tastes. While others are bickering over what form of music is legit or not, I'm chilling out listening to a playlist consisting of Pharoahe Monch, Johnny Cash,, Stevie Wonder Alice in chains, and Slick Rick. ******** everybody else's individual tastes.

People hate alot of things they either dont like, understand, or can relate to..
Thats the way its always gonna be either because of the ear their born with (by ear I mean what they hear to let them hold the assumptions, thoughts, opinions e.t.c e.t.c) or what they have been lead to believe..
This cant be changed as its innate, however those who dislike rap for no obvious reason dont hate it just cant be bothered to (what they believe as..) find out if its this that is really leading youths to gun crime, drugs blah blah blah...
Im sure if half the poeple that refute rap to be "proper music" took the time to find the roots of where it came from, and the message behind it all (not the main stream stuff.. I have no execuse for them), then they wont only be suprised but a bit more open minded... I guess I dunno ninja

You should be asking why do people always say that they hate rap I mean seriously I know MANY people who hate Rock but they don't care about it enough to say they hate it. Most people only say it because they are either following their friends, hate that allot of people like it (racism wise), or is so unimportant that they have to say that they hate rap just to get friends. Its sad really.
