"Everyone's mother teaches them not to eat things if they don't know what they are." She fluffed her wings and waggled one at him again. "It's just so obvious not to nibble on things you don't know. What if it was poisoned? That just proves it. You're a spook of some sort because you don't know simple things like that. "

By this point Kal was almost frothing at the mouth trying to rid himself of the awful taste, but that didn't stop him from replying between gnawing on tufts of dry grasses. "Most all these plants are unfamiliar. I don't want to starve."

He didn't want to admit that not eating strange plants was the only lesson he hadn't easily picked up when he was just a foal.

"Then you ask a local silly." She laughed before flicking a curl out of her eyes with a wing. "Just proves my theory more" She was just teasing him now but it was amusing.

Everyone knew that anyway and he should have known. What other reason was there besides he didn't eat plants? So obviously he must have eaten souls or something.

"Then what is good to eat? And what will get rid of this awful taste?" He asked desperately, now shaking his head in disgust and distress. He felt at that point she could call him Mr. Spook or anything at all, and he wouldn't say a word against it so long as she saved him from the aftereffects of eating that horrible plant.

She pointed a wing at a small patch of clover. "That should do it. If not you'll have to go down to the beach and use the salt water." She nodded and grinned.

The ocean did a good job of making bad tastes go away even if it tasted slightly bad itself.

Kal pranced over and tore into the patch of clover, chewing each desperate bite furiously to saturate his mouth with a new and not unpleasant flavour. He only settled down once the entire patch had disappeared into his mouth. Although the bad aftertaste wasn't completely gone, it was only a small and tolerable annoyance now. When Kal lifted his head he also found the filly's smile rather annoying, but it too was tolerable. After all, he must have looked pretty silly frothing at the mouth like that.

"Thanks," he said, managing to smile back.

She brushed a curl out of her face with a wing and laughed. "Taste better huh?" She'd managed not to ever eat something that bad but she had nibbled on some nasty things. Thankfully most if it was just overly salty and she could get the taste out with things that grew near home.

"That's what you get for trying to do stuff on your own when you don't know the area."

"I have no choice, I'm still too new to the area, and I don't know anyone who will point out what's good." Kal wrinkled his nose a bit at the lingering taste, convinced he would at least be more careful next time he had to try something new. It was a good thing he hadn't stumbled into that plant without Val to laugh at him and show him what was good.

She rolled her eyes and wiggled a wing at him. "Follow me.." He was going to contine making funny faces if he didn't get all the taste out of his mouth and the beach wasn't that far. He could rinse his tongue off there and maybe stop looking funny.

"Maybe if you asked someone then you wouldn't have to do it yourself? I mean my family lives close and there've got to be others out there somewhere you could talk to."

"I... don't know anyone that well, I wouldn't want to impose," he said, obeying and following her in an almost docile manner. He walked to one side and just a step behind the filly, where she would probably be able to see him wrinkling his nose once more.

It was usually no trouble for him to go about his business without asking for help, even if it did result in a bad stomach ache or an awful aftertaste every now and again.

"Everyone has to impose on someone eventually. If that didn't happen no one would have children, and no one would have friends, and you'd turn into a doormat." She shook her head and sneered at the idea. No way she'd ever become someone's doormat.

"You can have friends without imposing upon someone else," Kal argued in a mild tone, tossing his head to get his bangs out of his eyes. "And children are another matter, children require care and nurturing and can hardly be blamed for imposing upon their parents and caretakers. Adults have more control over their actions."

Even if Van seemed to like arguing, the little stallion had to admit that it made him think, and that was a more worthwhile way to pass the time than braindead grazing on his own.
