Nadia, failing to hear the howl over the sound of her own voice, did eventually notice Holden's unease. She peered out into the trees, squinting her eyes and looking around for anything out of the ordinary.

When she saw the shadowy shape out of the corner of her eye, she jumped in surprise and let out a tiny squeak, pulling the neck of her t-shirt up over her nose and mouth as if that would protect her. She didn't blink for the longest time, but when she did there were tears in her eyes. Whether they had simply resulted from staring too long or they had appeared out of fear, not even Nadia knew.

"We're in charge? WHAOH!" Ina grinned cheerfully, obviously finding the idea a pleasant one indeed. First she looked expectantly at Ismet for leadership, her tail wagging and her yellow eyes bright. But when he failed horribly she groaned, shaking her head. Guess she had to step up and show them how it was done. "Well, lets get these sticks and put the marshmellows on them!" she suggested, taking a stick of her own, "We have to get the marshmellows all warm and gooy if we want to make smores."

At the howl her ears perked and she turned her head. Her strong senses were acting up and though she found the howl more familiar then anything else, the shadows flickering around were not comforting. She skirted near Gavin, her eyes scanning the darkness. Well if there was a monster the boys should handle it, right? That was their job!

Ina and Gavin were in charge? Osha tipped his head. That could be okay. They were fun. Even if Ismet was kind of boring, Gavin and Ina would certainly find a way to make this interesting. He stood thoughtfully, just watching the oldest children expectantly. He was about to reach for a stick when the howl rang through their camp. He looked around at the other kids, miss-matched eyes wide.

"Wha-what was th-that?"

Even Ina looked scared. Swallowing, Osha quickly followed her lead and flocked to Gavin. Gavin was big and strong. He could protect them from whatever was lurking outside camp.

Ophiera accepted her cape back, pulling it about her delicate shoulders. Nadia's question made her blink. How to explain this? Hmm...

She picked up a twig from next to her seat, and then pointed at her throat, acting as if she were speaking. Then she pointed to the stick and broke it.

See? Voice was broken.

... And adults gone! She had been looking at Nadia, and when she looked back up, it was just kids. And a weird howling noise. She squirmed in her seat, pulling at the hem of her dress. She looked uneasy, and shifted closer to Nadia.

The ambiance of the campsite was enough to make a kid jumpy, but Gavin tried his best to keep his butt firmly attached to the log. Leader people didn't jump. They were never scared! So then why did the strange noises make him want to hold someone? Even Ina seemed a little skittish.

However, already at least one person was looking to him. He had to at least give the air that he was big, brave, and strong. Gavin scooted closer to Osha, unconsciously thinking that the closeness of another person would make the scene a bit less scary. "S'okay. Probably a squirrel or something. No monsters here. Definitely no monsters."

Whether he was trying to convince Osha, or himself, he didn't know. However, he'd never seen a monster before. He looked to Ina.

"Wanna go see?"

Half of him was excited, while the other felt impending doom right behind the bushes.

Osha wasn't sure if Gavin scooting closer should make him feel better, or more scared. He couldn't tell if Gavin was frightened, or just protecting him. The latter sounded better...so he'd go with that. "...right. Squirrel," he echoed, trying to convince himself Gavin was right. It wasn't monsters he was worried about, though.

He watched Gavin, frowning when he asked Ina to go investigate with him. Hey! Both leaders shouldn't go! Didn't he ever watch TV? Bad things happened to the guys left behind when the leaders moved forward without them. Ina should stay behind. He'd go with Gavin!

"I wanna come," he informed the hawk-boy. He scooted forward, leaning over to whisper in Gavin's ear. "Why if it's the mommy-stealing aliens?" he hissed, only loud enough for Gavin to hear. They stole Haki's daddy, didn't they? That meant they could steal Dacian too!

Holden had seen a lot of movies, Tristan had a passion for film and so the little raccoon was exposed to it quite frequently. He hard learn that going to inspect the source of a mysterious noise wasn't a good thing, but letting the leaders go off on their own meant doom for anyone left behind.

He'd follow Gavin and the others, but he wouldn't like it. So long as no one said "I'll be right back" things should go well.

"No, you go see," Ina insisted, giving him a gentle push. Her eyes weren't even on him, however, as they were darting around and peering sharply through the darkness. Her ears were also extremely active, picking up every sound they possibly could. Her tail was stiff and unmoving, which was rare. "It's a boy's job," she added quietly, tugging on her skirt either out of thought or nerves.

Apparently Gavin had not watched enough TV.

Seeing as no one else seemed to be too keen on the idea of investigating the bushes--other than Osha, but that was because Osha was his bestest friend in the whole wide world--Gavin pushed himself off the log, gripping his friend's sleeve as if to signal for him to follow. He fought the urge to gulp.

"Let's go," he whispered to Osha, hoping that whatever nasties were out there couldn't hear him. He especially hoped they weren't the mommy-stealing aliens. They weren't ready for that kind of challenge just yet.

A small twig snapped under his first step toward the bushes, causing him to jump slightly. Part of him considered putting Osha out in front of him, but technically he was the first to suggest this whole idea, and therefore volunteered himself as a meat shield. A few cautious steps later, he found himself in front of the bush that made the creepy noise. Taking a deep breath, he plunged into the leaves.

Perhaps it was tempting fate for the children to set out towards the bushes; perhaps it was simply children frightening themselves out in the forest. Whatever the case, those few children approached the bushes...

And nothing leapt out. In fact, nothing even rustled.

But while the children and toddlers seemed focused on that end of the little camp, they may have failed to pay attention to the other end. And, they likely got a surprise when some plates left on a log on the other side of the fire clattered to the ground.

And it wasn't the wind that had knocked them over, either.

The creature - for that's the only thing one could call it - seemed as startled by the clatter as the children themselves. It seemed inhumanly large - but then again, the children were all rather small; and with the shadows cast by the fire, it could easily have seemed larger then it was.

Grotesquely deformed, there seemed to be no telling what the creature actually was - although any child who had seen scary movies might make a connection with a werewolf.

For a moment, the creature froze, let out an eerie growl - and then turned and fled, leaving its apparent goal - a few uncooked hotdogs that had been waiting to be roasted on the fire.

Holden was quite relieved when nothing jumped out and/or tried to eat them and he let out an audible sigh to show it.

But then there was the sound of plates falling to the ground at the far end of their little camp. He tensed. Of course! Bad things always came from behind or above in scary movies, always.

He turned slowly to get a look at what it was that had caused the plates to fall. His eyes went as wide as the aforementioned plates when he say the thing. He had no idea what it was, to scared to even think about the possibilities, so he did what a sensible child would do. He screamed.

Ophiera had watched the kids going into the bushes for a little while, but then decided that that was too scary. She turned back to look at the fire, swinging her feet a little from where she sat on the log.

Then she caught a glimpse of a shadow. A very scary shadow. A very scary shadow that knocked over some plates and then came into the light of the fire and-

If this had been a dangerous very scary shadow, there would have been a problem - Ophiera couldn't scream.

She looked like she was screaming, and she latched onto Nadia. Tightly. She didn't look up, either, not knowing if the monster had left yet.

Nadia's eyes followed the older kids into the bushes, but her scream joined Holden's and Ophiera's silent one as the girl grabbed her. It was a short sound, stopping in her throat when she turned to see the strange monster growl and run away. She put her arms around Ophiera.

"G... gone?" she asked, gaining confidence now that the thing appeared to have left.

Fast-Forward

Within a bit of time, the children calmed down from their fear of seeing the monster. And while the monster had been scary, it was decided that staying out there was simply not a good idea; especially since Dacian was gone.

But, some of them didn't want to just run back and find Dacian - some of them, felt more curiosity then fear, by this point. And so, two groups were formed:

The first, was heading back to the compound; to find Dacian, of course. And if they happened to find anything along the way, well...why shouldn't they investigate?

The second group was remaining out in the forest - to see if they could figure out where the creature had gone, or where it had come from. After all, surely it was long gone by now...but it might have left traces behind.

Seeing the monster had given Ina less of a fright then she would have thought. It was still scary, sure, who wouldn't be scared of that thing? But she was mildly disappointed. She had expected herself to scream and cry like a proper damsal and it hadn't happened. Instead she had been frozen, tail quivering, until the creature departed. The young girl didn't really understand why she was disappointed; whether it was in herself or the monster she couldn't say.

But it certainly left her wanting something a bit...better.

So she had been determined to find out stuff about the monster. She didn't know what, but she wanted to know more. Maybe she was hoping to uncover some horrible secret about it. Whatever the case, she quickly took charge of the forest group. Did it help that she could see in the dark and smell things better? Probably.

She marched along at the head, pulling her skirt away from trees and brambles. Her ears were in a constant state of alert, twisting about on her head like a radar. But nothing was coming up of importance. It made her frown a little in frustrated and she passed a look back at the other children, "Come on!" Getting separated wasn't a good idea, even if they were looking for things, right?
