Hm, I can't say I know any steampunk bands. I guess the closest I've personally gotten to is Gatsbys American Dream (no apostrophe). Not so much their sound, but the style of their lyrics, I guess. They have one song that is completely about Lord of the Flies. Another song is titled "A Mind of Metal and Wheels," and the first few lines are as follows:
Far beyond (Here lies the vaudeville where creatures are gathering) The assembly (Cackle and drool at a land slowly dying) The monologue begins, the man is abandoned He cracks a lonely smile like an oyster that’s been shucked and dead The company, the red posies they spring, and they whispered, Sweet tragedy
Well, I like 'em. heart

The Decemberists? There album artwork is antique looking and has a lot of victorian type things in it. And a lot of their songs are about 17th century pirates and rogues.

I'd definitely agree with the Decemberists, and I can't believe I didn't mention them earlier. sweatdrop *puts on "Yankee Bayonet" *

The booklet art of Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea striked me as quite steampunk like... that's about it though...

You know, I was listening to Apocalyptica yesterday, and I decided that they were very steampunk. This might just be because their stuff reminds me so much of the Arcanum soundtrack, though.

Lily votes for:
-The Decemberists, even though by now saying that's a bit redundant. I would also like to say that their Mariner's Revenge Song is - QUITE POSSIBLY - one of the niftiest things ever created.
-Rasputina. A wondrously quirky mess of anachronistic cello-rock, if cello-rock can be classified as a genre. I LOVE

Ez3kiel is a French sort of Techno-Industrial band. I have a newer one of theirs in my profile as well.

The song "Quay Cur" by The Fiery Furnaces feels rather steampunk, at least to me. The rest of their music..eh, somewhat, I suppose. Maybe I'm entirely wrong.

Haha, I was going to mention Vernian Process and Apocalyptica, but it seems that I was beaten to the spot! Curses!
Yeah, Apocalyptica sounds very steampunk to me. Alot of their early stuff are covers of Metallica songs done with cellos. The result is often hauntingly beautiful while still sounding heavy. It's amazing how they can replicate the "heavy" sound of metal on cellos. They now do their own compositions using their own unique anachronistic sound. Definately check it out.

The CruxshadowsI dunno if they qualify as "steampunk music," but.. you'll probably like them if you like Abney Park. :3 They're just a bit dancier. (I think their official genre is "darkwave"..)

I just recently found out about Johnny Hollow. Are they consider Steampunk? I found out about them on the Brass Goggles forum.

I must add a band I found on someone's LJ. May I present The Tiger Lillies. The singer's falsetto is practically comical, but combined with the general subject matter (gruesome children tales from the 1800s, slightly embroidered upon) it turns genius. whee heart ...why yes, I AM significantly morbid. if you include pirates as steampunk than Battleheart(now alestorm) and Verbal deception would fit in well there.
