She wavered a bit as a brief wind twirled past her. Never had she been able to take in air as fresh and clean as that flight she finally had decended from. With a flick of her wings she gingerely folded them neatly upon her back as her senses opoenly intook the surroundings about her.
Looking over toward Shikoba she nodded with agreement "Yes. After you." she replied with a soft smile.
Today would be the day that her childhood warnings in this case were either true or false. She only hoped whatever it was, if there was such an ebil grotesque thing, lurking in the deep bowels of the dark cave.

Shikoba smiled as Nitika suggested he go first. Obviously she was still a little nervous about going in. But he really couldn't blame her. She had been told bad stories about caves for all of her childhood. The only thing that Shikoba found strange about the situation was that now, as she was an adult, she hadn't taken the time to explore her childhood warnings and find out if they were really true, or just something her parents told her to keep her closer to them and easier to watch.
But he shrugged, taking a few steps into the cave. He wasn't hesitant at all. He had been inside caves fairly often. He usually lived in the mountains, and there were many caves lurking underneath them, so he was no stranger. As they passed the opening of the cave, the light from outside illuminated the ground before them for about 10 feet before fading out. He turned back to Nitika, a grin on his face.
"Are you scared?"

She took a silent breath letting the air exhale outward through her nostrils with but a faint sound not audiable to Shikoba thankfully. The last thing she desired now as a full grown mare was to tremble and wince much like a foal does on its first outing, where every turn was possibly something not to be understood. Saissis was indeed a wonderful mother and she looked out for her children when she was able, but now she was off finding Nitika's father which set contemplations into a turning whell within the little mare's mind.
This was a turning point in her life. This she knew and wanted so badly to discover what she'd been kept from all her life. Standing proudly she gave once single swish of her tail and nodded with a deep breath as it followed out her nostrils.
"Yes. Its time the phantoms and demons be reveiled."
Whatever the outcome, she'd be ready for it no matter what was lurking in there. Stepping forward she smiled as the light dappled her deep ocean blue coat.

Shikoba took a few more steps into the cave. The slow "clip-clop" of his hooves on the stone floor echoed loudly in their cavernous surroundings. He turned back every now and then to see how Nitika was doing.
When he turned back around, facing forward, he saw a small lizzard run across his path and smiled. Perhaps it was slimy, scaley cretures like those that frightened Nitika and her family. But Shikoba knew that for the most part, the creatures that dwelt in caves were harmless.
As the continued still further into the cave, the sound of their hooves must have startled some bats, because a group of about 10 of them rushed forward, blindly flying at the two Soquili. Shikoba shook his head from side to side, and kicked his legs. He wasn't afraid of them, but it was rather annoying when they flew into him and tried to clutch onto his mane and neck. He turned around to see how Nitika was dealing with the bats.
"Are you ok?"

Nitika stepped forward staying close to Shikoba feeling her heart sink when the light, the warmth she'd grown up with was fading into darkness all around her. The lecturings of caves came into play as the light dicipated into a murky like scenery formed of rock and dirt from where she was treading.
Little creatures scurried here and there that she noticed, but never made any sort of fear to uplift her warnings as would have with her being a child. She simply smiled and let her "clip-clop" of her hooves console her.
Until the bats decided to make themselves known.
She couldn't help but rear up and paw at them spooked with such commition they made chattering and squeaking. Some tried to clutch into her mane, as others claimed her tail in a flailing matter.
For a moment if she could have she would of bolted to the entrance of the cave and took flight toward something less nerve wracking, but she simply let herself stand there, eyes shown white, and prove she wasn't a baby. Though completely from her fetlocks to her withers her body shook with panic.
Regaining herself she forced a smile and nodded, "Right as rain. You"?

Shikoba smiled, knowing that Nitika had to try hard not to panic too much as the bats assaulted her. He continued a few more feet into the cave, until just the tiniest sliver of light was left for them to see by. Then he turned and faced Nitika.
"So, anything horrifying or evil yet?"
He wondered how she was feeling. If he had proven to her that all her fears had been superstition.

She grimaced as the last bat crawled up her wing the scurried away. Such horrible little monsters that stick to you like a plague.
She smiled shaking her head at him feeling a bit rattled from the ambush.
"Nah just a few annoyances. gah my wing feels like something is crawling on it" she motioned with a flick of her wing releasing the leftover quivers her body was still making.
She let her feet fall smoothly making a dull clip-clop sound as she walked upon some pebbles at her feet.
"So how far do these things go anyway?" her head craning outward lookingaround at the huge rocky sides that kept going deeper within the damp cave they followed.

Shikoba smiled as she continued to shake. He wondered if she was still scared and just hiding it, or if she had finally gotten over her fears. If she was hiding it, she was doing a good job.
At her question, Shikoba shrugged. He had never reached the end of one of these caves. The light from outside never lasted very long, and he wasn't foolish enough to go walking around in an unknown cave in complete darkness. It wasn't a matter of fear, it was just dangerous. There was no way to know if the floor would just drop out, or what else could occurr on the unpredictable and unseen terrain.
"I'm really not sure. Never been the the end of one. I guess if you want, we can go a little bit further in. But I really don't think its a good idea. I'm not crazy about walking around in complete darkness. I like my legs intact."
He smiled and looked back at Nitika.

Dangerous. How that one word hit her like a nipping fly that just wouldn't go away. Maybe that was the reason Saissis had scolded her so harshly with stamps of her little hooves. Foals were the curious sort, so even danger appeared as a folly to one so naive.
"Intact? Yeah I think if you stumbled in there you might never come out. Maybe that's what my mother was implying when I was young, my curiousity was always something that got the better of me." she laughed lightly letting her eyes focus upon the glinting sunlight disappearing from the walls as they moved further.
She smelled the damp air with a hint of water running further inward.
"I suppose we could but I'm not apt to complete darkness myself. I think I'd prefer the sunlight in my later days if you get what I mean".
The fear was subsiding yet she wondered what was way in the darness herself. Like a strange want of something you could never have. It was annoying as it gnawed at her subconscience the way it was.

Shikoba was glad that she agreed with him. He really wasn't afraid, but as he said, he'd like to keep his legs intact. So he turned around now towards the entrance of the cave.
"Yeah, that was probably it. There really aren't any horrible creatures in here. It just get a little iffy when you lose the sunlight."
He ruffled his feather-like tail a bit before continuing on towards the entrance.
"So, was it as bad as you thought it would be?"

"Not really" she smiled with a flick of her ear, "I've been curious what's further in, but Saissis didn't raise a stupid mare either. Somethings are better off left alone".
Something was glinting toward the back of the pitch darkness which caused her to glance at it, but she turned her own intuition toward the saftey of the light that beconed to her with gentle rays from the entrance.
She thought for a moment of her youth that would have left her run toward that darkness with unknown whereabouts. Chasms, steep inclines, and ore were just awaiting a stupid mind's curiousness.
"So now what..." she mentioned sticking her head out the entrance. Was the journey simply over with things settled or was there more to see and do perhaps.

Shikoba surugged. They had seen what they came to see, right? Did she want to do something else?
"Well, did you have anything in mind?"
He took a few steps towards the entrance of the cave. He walked out onto the grassy area in front of it.

Nitika smiled tossing her mane in a lively manner.
"I think I'm heading for a nice flight down toward the ocean shore. This time of year the surf and the sands are wonderful combined with that wonderful sea swept air. You're more than welcome to join me if you're up for a nice adventure." she nodded turning her finely built head to look at him.
A good flight running in the salty air was always a refreshing revival after the murkiness and dampness of the caves.

Shikoba considered it a bit. This was probably the longest time he had spend with another Soquili, save Aishwarya. Is this what friends did? Just spent time with each other for no particular reason, and just let whatever happened happen? That actually didn't sound too bad.
But for today, Shikoba had had enough. It seemed time for him to go back to the mountains, and maybe go back to the teepee.
"I thank you for the offer, but I'm afraid I'll have to decline. But perhaps we'll see each other some other time?"
He waited to see what her response was. He hoped that she didn't feel insulted that he didn't want to spend more time with her. For a normally anti-social being, Shikoba had been quite friendly today, and he was actually feeling a little weird about it.

"She started to frown but smiled gratefully instead.
"Not a problem. I consider you a friend now since you did take time to address my fears were less than mere superstitions. Many others wouldn't of given me the time of day to something as frivolous as that." she thanked him with a nod of her delicate head.
She stetched her wings raising her head toward the skies and inhaled deeply. A small but instant scent aroused her senses which she knew was the faintness of the calling sea.
Turning her head toward him she smiled deeply one last time, "Do take care Shikoba, and no worries with me running into those dark caves with the ferrocious monsters", she giggled with a positive wink, "I do hope we can talk again some other day."
This day, how odd it had started had turned out to be something a little more than she expected. That made her content and reassured things could only get better as they went along with other soquili she'd come across.
