"You do?" The look Tsani got was quite dubious. "Then how far have you gotten, really? How do I know you're not from just over the hill?"

The stallion snorted, grinning at that. "You could follow me. But how do I know you could keep up?"

Akila rolled her eyes in a typical teen fashion. "You know, it really isn't polite to doubt a lady's abilities." With a glint in her eye she grinned crookedly and added, "But I could suppose you could be forgiven. You did just meet me after all, you didn't know any better."

"I suppose you'll have to teach me?" His wings spread along with his smile.
He was more than a little surprised by the eager curiousity that compelled him to do whatever it took to see what he could be taught. Probably not much, at least not in a race, as he'd never met a Soquili that could outpace him yet from the air. But the mare was an unpredictable one, to say the least....and the big stallion found himself liking the company.
His son had long since grown and gained his own wings, and Natsiya always kept to his own solitary ways. That had left his sire with considerable pride, but also considerable loneliness.
Loneliness? No, never. There were plenty of more important things to do than socialize!
At least, until he had a herd again....and until then, getting the herd was all he needed to think about. There was no time to be lonely. Which he wasn't, anyway.
Tsani dismissed the thoughts with a flap of his white wings. Lonely or not, that was something he didn't have to worry about, for the moment.

"Anytime, anyplace," Akila quipped, grinning wryly as she tossed her head. "I bet I can keep up with you and then some, at that. Care to try it?" There was a challenging glint in her azure eyes as she pranced sideways a few steps, tail flagging.

Tsani's own hiked high, and with another snort he was in the air, wearing an equally lofty smirk. "Tell me that at the finish!"
Another snort, and he was in the lead. The stallion laughed at that. Of COURSE he was! He was born to lead!
He couldn't help but glance back to see how the mare was following, though.

Akila's smile curled even wider. So Tsani wanted to race, did he? Well, she'd give him a race he wouldn't soon forget! She lunged into a full gallop with a switch of a tail that streamed behind her like a banner, whipping in the wind. Her long legs stretched and grabbed, eating up the ground as she lowered herself nearer the earth. Nostrils flared to suck in breath as she glanced up now and again to make sure that she hadn't lost Tsani. That simply wouldn't do.

Tsani faltered at the sight, slowing down without even realizing it. He wasn't the only ambitious one, it seemed. The mare was pushing herself so hard he momentarily worried she may burst her heart.
The next moment, he caught himself contemplating those long legs rather the strength behind them, and instead of the flash of determination in her dark eyes....well, they were....beautiful.
The stallion snorted to himself as she raced past him, heedless of his attention. What was he doing!?
Born to lead. He fixed his eyes on the horizon, determined to keep them there until he won, and his wings beat doubletime as he speared ahead.
Born to lead.
Especially himself!

Puzzlement flashed across Akila's features as Tsani dropped behind. If she didn't know better, she would have sworn he was distracted by something! But nobody would do that in the middle of a race...right? Unless he was letting her win... The mare smirked again, worries erased, as Tsani regained speed. Good, so he wouldn't let her win just because she was a mare.
If he did, he'd better pray that his wings could hold him up there forever.

To his credit, the big stallion never once let anyone win anything. He didn't become a herd leader by expecting anything less than the most his herd could do....even if, in the end, they did more than he would have ever dreamed they would....
But his most would be more than enough here. He beat his wings in a steady but determined rhythm, certain the mare would tire long before they reached the foothills. He caught himself before glancing to his opponent, this time, and snorted hard, eyes narrowing to the horizon instead.
He just really hoped she wouldn't be too upset when he won.

Well, whatever the reason for his lapse, Akila was glad to see that another wasn't following. The problem with noticing that, however, was that her eyes were up in the sky much more than they should have been, instead of focused on the path ahead. Which unfortunately meant that she didn't see that sudden dip in the ground.
A shriek of surprise rent the air as Akila stumbled and fell, shoulder plowing into the ground. Stunned momentarily, all she could do was blink.

He looked back then, eyes wide in horror, and he twisted so sharply in the air that he nearly fell himself. He folded his wings and hit the ground in a hard gallop towards the mare, nostrils flared and tail lashing.
"Are you hurt!?"
He was already carefully nosing over her to answer that for himself.

Shaking her head, Akila's answer caught in her throat a moment at the unexpected touch. Strange sensations rushed through her, and she shook her head again, this time in an attempt to clear her mind. What was the matter with her? She didn't think she'd hit her head... "I'm okay, I think," she got out finally, wincing a little as she slowly rose. Perhaps not hurt, but her shoulder would be quite sore for some time.

"Just....take it easy." Tsani stepped around her, continuing his inspection. She was standing, that was good, but what if she shouldn't be? Or if she sat down....what if she couldn't get back up? He saw her wince.
They were so far away from the village now. He snorted, pressing to her side supportively, folding a protective wing across her back. She'd be okay. Even if he had to fly her to help himself, she would be.
"You're never going to win that way." he offered with a weak smile.

"Nothing's broken that I can tell," Akila replied, leaning against him gratefully. It felt...comforting. And yet there was something else too...something that she didn't find with her family. What was that sensation? Tsani's next words drew her from her musings. "Well, you have to give me credit for the effort, at least!" On impulse, she reached up to n** at his jaw.
