I tried to quote someone's post and accidentally pressed the edit button... xp Not doing that again, of course, but it scared me half to death!

Hahaha, yes, 'tis a bit strange being a mod... I got a surprise seeing a 'ban' next to everyone on the members list, took me a while to figure out that they weren't actually banned and that it was just an option whee

But work's ok, there are more mods now so I guess that will make things easier. So basically we just patrol the forum and move threads to where they're sposed to be and all that? should be ok.

...made that mistake before. ninja

Anyway, new mods, got any suggestions about how we can lure more people into the fanfic section? It's kind of lonely in there. cry

I like fanfic, I'm just not crazy about sitting around reading it on a computer screen for long periods of time. The font is not condusive to doing that usually.

I'm a mod at Carolina Gaia & Holmes Sweet Holmes, & I now own my own guild (through a mule). As long as you're a responsible person it isn't so big a deal. Trying to think up ways to help add interest & content are the hardest parts, I think.

Hmm, well competitions seem to raise interest a fair bit... thing is with fanfiction though, it's your own personal writing, and I think (well I do, anyway) sometimes people may get a tad... shy about their writing. I mean, I began a fanfic, but I suck at writing, and then I never seem to have time to finish it either.

Maybe we could have a short story competition or something, save everyone from writing long ones.

Otherwise I don't think there is much that can be done, because fanfiction... just doesn't appear to be that popular in general.

True, fanfics tend to take more of a time investment to read. Still, it would be nice if it were a little more active. Not sure how interested people would be in a fanfic contest. Hmm...

How about a round-robin style contest, where people are grouped into teams, and each member takes turns writing the story. It would end after a specific # of rounds... say 2 or 3. Of course something like that would only work if we could convince enough people to participate.

Yeah. Fanfiction can be pretty popular, but it depends on what subject. Go to fanfiction.net and look at all the Harry Potter fanfic. That's basically all the site holds nowadays. But DW fanfic doesn't seem to be so popular much..I'm not exactly in favor of it, but it's probably waning interests because really all the majority of us have is the show to go on, and Harry Potter has books with bajillions of character info....*shrug*

We could get two or so of the mods to be betas (not exclusively though) or whatever the term is, since they could edit posts, and therefore use another color to edit for spelling or grammar or something with the author's approval...that and possibly a contest is all I can think of..

You mean proof-readers?

But yeah, a contest might be kind of cool. Maybe if there was a limit on how long it was or something, so that whoever was judging didn't have to wade through pages and pages and pages of text for each entry.

Don't know if this helps at all but we could try something like a challenge to write, in no more than (say) 2000 words, a particular Doctor Who crossover story (eg. Doctor Who meets Harry Potter etc). This was an idea that came up on one of the big Robin Hood forums but then again the fanfiction section is much more popular there so I don't know if it would work. And we'd have to work out the actual word limits and all that stuff.

There's also less story based things like poetry and the three word game, both of which seem to live in the games forum but would make good fanfiction type competitions too.

Also I kinda like the idea of having mod beta/proof readers. I'll admit I've been neglecting the fanfiction section... but it would help a lot just for some of the stories to be tidied up a bit, spelling, punctuation etc. The stories are good but anything that would make them easier to read would be great. And maybe a kind of standardized title system on the threads so people know exactly what the story is about and the age range. Did we have that already? I can't remember...

And if the font was a tad bigger & on Bold. The normal default is OK for regular posting, but wearing on the eyes for long reading.

And it should all be in Helvetica! Though I'm not sure you can actually do that on here...

Nope, just one rather boring font. smile

Yeah, that thing. ^^

And crossovers would be cool, only I'd be concerned about quality. Some fanfics I've read (not here) are just total messes since nobody proof-read it... it's like a zoo of bad grammar.. burns my eyes! I'd be more than happy to do some proofing for 2-3 people a few times a week, just to make it a bit easier on the eyes....ehe... sweatdrop Not saying that any of it is bad, just that I'd prefer it if the grammar was correct... wink
