i don't know if i'd say i look down on them, but when they still eat gelatin and whatnot it kind of disapoints me. i still am glad that they dont eat (most) meat though one of my vegetarian friends made a comment about his jell-o being made of meat and then slurped it down. it just kind of sickens me

in all honesty? for those who went veg for animal rights reasons, yes, i do have a problem with them not being vegan. it's honestly not that hard. most cereals are vegan & fortified with nutrients, whole wheat pastas & brown rice are vegan, fruits & veggies are obviously vegan, & beans are a great source of protein.
it's not that difficult unless you have a medical problem.

I hate when vegans talk down to vegetarians. I'm not doing this for anyone except myself. I'm on this guild to learn more about both, and find good recipes and whatnot. Not to be yelled at. I don't do this for image. I don't do this for animals. I think eating another living being is just gross.
I want to be healthy. I avoid meat and gelatin like the black plague. I read labels. I only eat cheese with microbial rennet. No animal rennet. I gave up parmesian...wich i loved. we get cage-free eggs, or ones from local farms
My parents are vegetarian as well. But right now we're not ready to give up the rest (sept my dad is lactose). I look UP to vegans...but I don't look up to those who belittle me for what others never even get close to. We may get to a day in which we or me atleast get to the point where eggs and dairy are no more. Honestly, none of us have the time to make sure we get all the nutrients we need on a vegan diet. Mom has a newborn, dad works and goes to school, and i've got school.
I own docs. but i get good use out of it. we have a leather couch that will last longer then our old cloth one. we got these before going vegatarian. and if our diets change to 'vegan' we're not going to throw out a perfectly good couch.
The indians used all parts of the animal. I respect that. i have eaten a couch worth of hamburgers befor going Veg.....

It depends on the vegetarian, and really I think that's true of everyone. Vegetarianism is a great step and there are lots of great vegetarians out there. My husband is vegetarian.
However, like all subsets of humanity, there are vegetarians that I do not like.
~Vegetarians that think veganism is going too far. I'm not a fan of. ~Bullshit-a-tarians, they eat fish and chicken, because those things grow on trees, are not actually vegetarians. ~Vegetarians that prostrate themselves on the cross of WHUTZ GUUD FOR TEH AMINALS. Welp. There's a disconnect there that I want to fix, not everyone can go vegan right off the bat, but if you've been a vegetarian for x amount of years and fly off the handle about killing cows and tortured chickens but still support the chicken and veal industry, well... we have a problem my friend. ~ Vegetarians that constantly complain about not being able to find anything to eat. As a vegan I am resourceful and prepared and I get really huffy at anyone that doesn't take the time to think now and then and complains heartily about not having food.
Suicidal watercolours, try Parma! It's vegan Parmesan, you can order it online.
Now. Pregan items, absolutely fine by me. It's worse to consume more rather than use the item well. The only thing about pregan items that bother me are the "OMGZ UR LEATHUR COUCH/SHOOS/WHATEVRZ UR NOT GUD VEGANS IMMA GO MUNCH BURGIR NOW" thing that people decide is a good thing to say when they see said pregan items.
I hate it when people attack vegetarians for not being vegan, because I don't think it's conducive to having more vegans and I think it paints all vegans in the colour you've shown your vegetarian acquaintance.

Judging people is separate and outside the realm of dietary habits.
Those who judge will find a topic, find a rationale, and find a person who's beliefs are different than their own.
If a vegan is looking down upon a vegetarian, it's not because they're vegan, or for anything the vegetarian is doing. It's because they look down on others. If they judge based on what the other eats, they'll judge them for what kind of car they drive, what salary they make, where they live, and the color of their skin.
Judging is judging.
Peace and love, bitches.

Just wanted to chime in, as I don't think I've really touched on this particular subject before. First off, I would like to remind the OP that not all vegetarians consume dairy and eggs. Certainly strict vegetarians don't! It's important to remember that lifestyle changes are often taken up with small steps. Many start by going lacto-ovo-vegetarian and then later remove these products to become a vegetarian. Eventually, they might remove other animal products, such as leather and fur, from their lives and become vegan. Just because someone is a vegetarian, it's a bit presumptuous to assume that they consume dairy and eggs. It's always worth asking to see what kind of vegetarian they are, and where they stand in their own progression. Whew. That said, as a strict vegetarian who's aiming for a vegan lifestyle, I can say that I do not look down on lacto-ovo vegetarians or pescatarians. Nobody is perfect, who am I to judge someone who is already making an effort? Their decisions are their own, and they are already accomplishing more than most around them by taking these first steps. Naturally, I hope that they continue to move forward with these changes and eventually maintain a healthy vegan life, but it's unlikely that this will be the case for everyone. What we eat and how we live are very personal choices, and while I will be happy for those trying to make a difference (however small it may be), I will not judge them based on imperfections I may see in their efforts. Instead of working ourselves up over (and perhaps even alienating) the people who are at least facing the right direction, wouldn't it be better to put our energy elsewhere?

I was a lacto-ovo for over a year before becoming vegan, and I believe it helped me transition more easily (also I didn't really know about veganism until quite recently...).
Anyways, every little bit helps right? Even though veganism is preferable, it's better to be a vegetarian or a pescatarian instead of a carnivore! And there is a chance a lot of them may become vegan eventually.

I don't look down on vegetarian because some of them don't really know about why they should be vegan. They're also at least doing something instead of nothing. I was a vegetarian before I was vegan, and I knew someday I would be a vegan, but I didn't know when. A lot of people use vegetarianism as a first step.

I'll admit, it saddens me to see a vegetarian whom doesn't aspire to be vegan, but instead of being hostile, I try to be encouraging and kind, if I tried anything else, I know I'd be setting a bad face for em, and then they could pull the same thing as an omni, "I once knew a vegan, and she was angry, mean, militant". :/
Anyway, yeah, one thing that REALLY pisses me off is how a coworker says his wife is VEGAN but eats fish, even after I explained to him that vegans don't eat ANYTHING from an animal, not even fish. But instead of punching him(like I very much wanted to do) I gave him my best "I'm SO confused by your inaccurate statement" face and resumed working. xD And he stares at me and grins... its so creepy, so I just get out of his line of vision, and usually when I peek around the corner he's headed the other way.... *shivers*) [that was REALLY off topic]
But yeah, I personally try to be pleasant as possible, and I remember the quote "When vegetarians grow up, they become vegans", I just hope they are encouraged to grow up a little faster because of me(and are forever young at heart). smile

I'm on year four of being a vegetarian. Still, a few people think that "I will go back". Some think it is just " a girl thing", "a long over due phase", and one person, "a really messed up disorder". But, as they eat their meat like it's candy, and their physical and chemical balance falls apart as they age, we will see whether my "diet" is as they say...
I may have vegan days, but I am not vegan. I don't like what goes on in the milk and egg industry. I rarely eat the two, but they are in my diet-unfortunately. I like to be able to go out to dinner, without being a nuisance. I like to hang out with friends, without having to eat salad all of the time. The menues typically don't go on the side of a vegan. It's hard enough for a vegetarian.
Anyways, I like old leather, old ivory, and old silk. Just my historical significance background...
