There would be nothing to latch onto, for anything that the spikes and chain could take hold of would fall into the pit. Perhaps fall wasn't an apporpriate word, but become forced down by rampant growth patterns. That which had turned to rot began to grow with new life, this abberant change forcing an evolution. Even if Ebby could find a way not to be sucked down into the bowels of the earth he would quickly find the world at large evolving to incorporate him into the cycle.

The sound that burst from within the depths of the Black Helm, Rogheim, had no place in this world or the next - it was an insult, an affront to all things, its booming, echoing roar would have left a mere mortal reeling and all but dead. It was not a yell, nor a scream of rage - calling it a roar, even would be all too vague and misleading. It was the kind of noise that scythed impatiently through to the very soul of things - a blast, a torrent of hatred that burned against the very essence of things. As the rocks came pouring down, Ebby executed what would seem a nigh impossible feat of acrobatic skill - somehow swinging upward by having kicked away from a rock above him. As the echoes of the sound died away, Lokimaru fluidly leapt here and there, not quite making progress, but always a good few steps ahead of falling into the pit.
Finally, something came back - the sound burst into the world again, but it was going back in the other direction now, as if it were a sonar - bouncing off no god knows what and spiraling back to its source. A flash of something colder and much more ancient than plain darkness engulfed Ebby - it was not dark, the mere absence of light, but rather the opposite of light - an anti-shadow of sorts. A rush of wind, and the son of Ebline found himself slowly falling toward the 'tree' that all of this had centered on...

The stream of rock pouring down began a solid slab, the whole of the tree extending down into the darkness of the abyss. Organic and inorganic components began to bleed streams of chaos never seen on this world or in the next. Streams surged into rivers, and rivers surged into reaching hands that strove to grab Ebby, always heading downwards. Rot and decay only seemed to fuel these hands, as if this abberant nature was now a greater whole of their cycle.
