Dumbledore is gay.
  WTF, man?
  And....?
It's not relevant; why did JKR bring it up?
  I'm fine with that.

I quite enjoyed Order of the Phoenix when I saw it, but, at the same time, it's a little...forgetable.
PostPosted: Mon Jul 16, 2007 10:07 am

I wasn't exactly up on the details, but I was skimming through the book for 2 1/2 hrs in line to get the tickets. mrgreen

The huge thing with the prophecy room where all the shelves go crashing didn't happen, they just added it for dramatic effect. It seemed to reminiscent of GoF where Cedric and Harry are running to get the Triwizard Cup and the bushes (that weren't supposed to attack in the first place) were caving in on them as they ran.

Sirius was supposed to tell Harry that once it was over he would adopt Harry. I seem to recall him saying that nearer the end of movie 3. I think he had one line about it in this movie though.

Sirius' death seems to be the main bane of most of us. I remembered from the book exactly what Eirwyn said, not just going nuts and trying to attack Bellatrix immediately afterwards.

Yeah, the battle took place in several different rooms, one with the brain tendrils, the other with the time-turners and hourglass (I think that was the room with the Veil in it too - it had all sorts of oddities in it)...man they changed it so much!

And yeah, Harry had to write that one line -which they changed- a heck of a lot before he left. They most likely changed it for two reasons: 1) Cut yet -another- scene to bits, and 2) Gee, it'd scare the little kids if Hawwy started inexplicably bleeding a lot. The movie showed him in pain, yet it only happened once. Sheesh Harry, take it like a man. talk2hand xd

I first saw the cabin scene on the train, and I'm all "why are Hermione and Ron with Harry??" That part irked me, and then I realized they left out the whole Prefect storyline. That sucks when you consider it's a big deal, not to mention it shows that Harry isn't always gonna get everything, plus they introduced Percy as a prefect back either in movie one or two.

I wanted to see Harry under the bushes and having to explain that "well, the news changes every day." Plus it didn't even remind me of a Harry Potter movie at the beginning, apart from the music. The playground set made me think of the merry-go-round that Harry is near when the Knight Bus shows up in PoA. 0_o

And as to Daniel Radcliffe's haircut, I don't like it as much as the earlier styles, but at least it's longer than what pictures showed before the movie came out. And I prefer it to the one he had in Goblet.. it was waaay too long then.
(I think as a general rule I basically despise everything in GoF except Barty Jr. xd xd )

I liked GoF better than this one. The dragon chase looked awesome on a 60-foot screen. xd

I like the soundtrack on this one, though. I was sitting alone watching the end credits (why does everyone always instantly leap up & leave? Don't they know some movies have a little treat at the end of the credits?) & listening to the music, & I thought the main theme with the wild electric guitar in it was a very cool sign of Harry's growing up--more teen music than kid music now--as well as very suitable for what Harry's mood was supposed to be in this movie (even if you didn't see it as often as you ought).
PostPosted: Tue Jul 17, 2007 10:04 am

Ya,k I agree. GoF was better than this one. Barty Crouch Jr. is awesome. xD He does that little tongue thing, so weird.

@Eirwyn: Ya, that's Monty. ^^

They missed so much in the 5th movie. Of course, they missed alot in all the other movies, but I think they made up for it there!

A note: as I most likely won't be able to read the Deathly Hallows until the 26th, I'm taking a leave of absense (from Gaia) as of Saturday at 10pm or something like that. I'm leaving very early Sunday morning for a 5 day church conference, and I don't know if I can take Harry Potter on the 10 hour bus ride. (might end up sneaking it in my pack) Plus the convenient walmart 2 blocks from my house closes at 11pm. So I'm stuck trying to find the book sometime 5AM the next morning. *kicks walmart*

Ah well, gotta go pack. I'll be off, and I'll have some form of review in my Gaia journal if not on this thread by the following Sunday if I can help it. (that's a week of reading/rereading for the rest of ya wink )

I'll either be sobbing, ranting, or in a coma by the time I finish the book at least once. If I do get it on the bus, I've got three decently empty notebooks to vent in. I think that's enough. >.<

I'm saying this since Eirwyn might want me to rant like crazy again, but just feel free to rant after the book release (the NY Times newspaper actually got a leaked copy and wrote a spoilered review of it.) scream

Otherwise I really don't think there's much left to talk about (the movie got pretty well verbally AK'd); so how about we post what we think is gonna happen, and then match it post-release??

Oh, and my last post will be a form I'm gonna use that I got here.

Bye for now,
Kitty (Ceribri)

Divination Quiz
An original quiz by Ben V.T.
(location: here)

Editor's Note: This isn't the typical editorial, but we thought it'd be fun to test your "Divination" skills with this quiz. Here are 101 chances to "Unfog the Future." Good Luck!

Will Hogwarts re-open? Will the trio take classes? Who will be Head Boy/Girl? Will the Death Eaters attack Privet Drive? Will they attack the wedding? Why did Dumbledore trust Snape? Will Snape be redeemed? What about Draco? Is Nagini a Horcrux? Is Harry a Horcrux?
... and - oh yes, who is going to survive this grand adventure?

Welcome to the Divination Quiz (Year 7). It's time to have a little fun with your predictions for Deathly Hallows (and put an end to all those pesky friends who keep telling you how much they can predict in the HP books). The rules are fairly simple - 101 questions worth 1 point each.

I suggest getting together with your friends, family, or favorite HP fanatics and filling in a copy of the quiz prior to the release of DH. You can also download the quiz to edit/change/add your own questions to include your own theories. Remember, this isn't your average WOMBAT or OWL-level challenge. The Divination Quiz is NEWT-level, and may be your last chance to show the world your HP foresight!

Please mark these accordingly: True/False, Fill-the-blank, multiple choice (delete all but your choice), or in paragraph form. No cheating and altering posts after the book release!

I know one thing--if Harry's still in school at the start of this book it will be such a total COP-OUT. He was making it quite clear that he was going to take off after Voldemort at the end of the last book.
It wouldn't be the first cop-out in the series, mind you--after GoF I thought it seemed pretty obvious the lines had been drawn & the kids of the Voldemort supporters were walking out of Hogwarts to go attend their own schooling somewhere else from now on & concentrate on being really evil & powerful from then on--but all that was gone by the opening of the next book & Draco was back in school. rolleyes

I couldn't tell with GoF... it was the most boring thing ever to me...
But yeah, I think even JKR has said that he's not returning to school. That would just be dumb. He only has to go back to the Dursleys one last time for the magical protection, and then Godric's Hollow or something...

Besides, Draco is still a redeemable character. He doesn't exactly want to be a DE, it seems...

I think Draco liked the idea originally, but once he got stuck with duties he found out what it would really be like & what sort of things he would really be doing & quickly began losing his taste for it. He's NOT a nice guy but he isn't as evil as he seemed (or probably aspired) to be.

What really got me was how much the left out of Sirius, he's my favourite character and they pretty much ditched him in GOF. They had him in the beginning of OOTF but then... his exit scene was pathetic, they left you with about 1 minute of feeling depressed and then whacked a happy ending in the way... I mean fair enough they have to chop out a lot of the plot, but really- that's the longest book and it was the shortest movie. They managed it better than GOF though, the left out so much in that one.

A little fun for those of you who like the insanely long lists of stuff:
No worries, as there aren't any spoilers for book seven. ^^

Quote:
Dumbledore: "Remember Cedric Diggory. The boy senseless enough to wander somewhere with Harry Potter in the final scenes of the movies"

Things I will not do at Hogwarts:

1. 'He who must be maimed' is a funny, but inappropriate title for Voldermort.
2. I will not roll a d20 to see if my spell has worked or not.
3. Starting a betting pool on the fate of this year's Defense Against Dark Arts teacher is tasteless and tacky, not a clever moneymaking concept.
4. I will stop asking the Arithmancy teacher what the square root of -1 is.
5. Any resemblance between Dementors and Nazgul is coincidental.
6. I will stop asking when we will learn to make "Love Potion Number Nine".
7. I will not say the phrase "Dude, get a life." to Lord Voldemort.
8. When applying for a post at the Ministry of Magic after graduation, I should not cite "Fred and George Weasley" as my greatest influence at Hogwarts.
9. Putting down "Lord Voldemort" is probably not best either.
10. I do not have a Cyberman Patronus.
11. While it is appropriate to refer to Voldemort as "Master" while in his service, Voldemort and the Master are not one and the same.
12. I cannot substitute Prydonian robes for my Hogwarts uniform.
13. -Nor can my winter scarf be longer than standard issue.
14. I cannot attempt to recreate the Key to Time in Transfiguration class.
15. -Or transform a pepperpot into a Dalek.
16. A time turner is not a flux capacitator, and I should therefore not install one in any Muggle cars.
17. I am not to stare at the Great Hall ceiling during dinner in the winter and cry 'My god, it's full of stars!'
18. I will not, under any circumstances, ask Harry Potter who died and made him boss.
19. When called upon in class, I shall not insist that the correct answer to everything is '42'.
20. "You might be a Pureblood if..." jokes will get me in trouble, especially in front of Slytherins.
21. If I insist on carrying out my plans of producing "Riddle-de-dee: The Voldemort Musical", I will do so under a nom-de-plume.
22. The song "Ding Dong, The Witch is Dead" is never, ever appropriate.
23. “Springtime for Voldemort” is not an acceptable suggestion for the class play.
24. Sir Cadogan is not one of the knights who say “Ni”.
25. "Potter: 6 Voldemort: 0" is not a good t-shirt slogan.
26. I must not run up to Snape, push him and yell 'Bother'.
27. Barty Crouch Jr. is not a Timelord, despite what looks like a regeneration scene.
28. I will not bribe the Fat Lady to shout "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!" at first-years who get the password wrong.
29. I will not refer to Snape as "The Half-Blood formally known as Prince".
30. I should not refer to DADA teachers as "canaries in the coal mines".
31. Bringing fortune cookies to Divination class is not extra credit.
32. I am not allowed to declare Hug a Slytherin Day.

You know. I really feel that people are being unfair to the movies. The latest one was almost three hours. If they were to have all the things you want that were in the books they would have needed to make it a good six hours. Things HAD to be cut out. I'm sorry, but that's the truth. Get over it! Cherish what was there. Like Gred and Forge's departing ceremony. (I'm re-reading the whole series.)
And that fight between Voldermort and Dumbledor. And much more they come up with that they didn't have in the books. Like the twins leaving the box of chocolate for Felch. That was great.

And I'm not sure, by your comments, if you had noticed, but they had small details in there that played homage to the books. Like the Quibber being upside down. And that catise (spelling) like thing Neville had in his hands. I was hoping he'd poke the thing.

I have one thing to ask. Have a thing in the poll that asks if the person loved it.

Yeah, I did notice the Quibbler upside-down, and was hoping she'd mention the runes or even that silly article about Sirius being part of a wizarding rock band. ^^
And the cactus too...
The latest movie was not three hours, it was two hours and 18 minutes long. (If you take out the credits, it's under 2:10) The reason a lot of people complained is because OotP, as the longest book in the series thus far, had the shortest movie counterpart.
Yes, things had to be cut; from what I've read, at least half an hour of "stuff they didn't need". Perhaps if they kept it in, we wouldn't be so upset. Most movies with that much expectation are usually around 2 1/2 hours or more.

I can understand completely that not everything I love about the book will make it into the movie; there's a need for cutting some scenes and altering others so you won't lose interest. But just think: another 15 seconds to include Lily in "Snape's Worst Memory" would make a great deal of difference. A few more minutes to explain better about another character.. it's so much better that way. I've seen stills of Lily in the flashback, and McGonnagall after she was hit with the Stunners (Hagrid was too), an extended scene with Umbridge interrogating Trelawney, and the Dursley scene on the train platform at the end... they could have just left some if not all of it in instead of releasing it as "extras" on the DVD...
That's why I'm a bit more critical of this movie than the others..because they'd already gotten the scenes, only edited/removed them when they didn't really need to. The movie was too short.

What Cerebri said.... smile

I think it's weird they're making the movies shorter. The LoTR trilogy was the other way 'round; the first movie got chopped down (the SpExEdition was SO much more coherent & cool!), but once the audience was established they went for the longer movies. Why is Warner hacking down & rendering the HP movies confusing to mainstream (non-book-reading) viewers now? The book-readers are a big audience, but why alienate the rest?

Yeah, LotR was cut down for the first one but I love how they created the extended edition. heart ....anyways...
At this rate we're gonna have Deathly Hallows either be 1 1/2 hrs long or just go straight to video. xp
I understood the movie and accepted the changes immediately 'cause I knew what really happened, but my mom got confused, my little sister (to her credit she's read 1-3) got confused, and my dad thought he'd missed a movie in between 4 & 5....
.....if they're trying to go for the non-readers then they've made a mistake since a)a large amount of people only see the movie, and b)the fans will get angrier than Dumbledore in GoF...
