Nikomas was about to answer when she also saw the flash of the pendant, with Fell on his back under the bench. "That brat is my son, and at least I let him associate with others and make friends. Hiding your daughter from any and all interaction can only hurt her. Would you rather she be clean, safe and lonely, or have friends that she can laugh with and act silly with?" She asked, every trace of emotion but fury gone from her voice, her fists clenched at her sides.
Fell made a face, sticking out his lower lip in a quivering pout. That man wasn't being very nice. He just wanted to be friends, after all. He rolled over onto his belly, crawling out from under the bench, his white shirt covered with dirt spots on the front now before he brushed himself off. "I know how to treat things." The raven-boy said petulantly. "I jus' wanted to play, s'all." He said, turning to look at his mother. There wasn't anything wrong with that, was there?

N'Barit affected the tone he did when he was totally dismissing someone's arguments, a California surfer dude inflection he had picked up from Thomas Parsons. It was his way of saying "you're not even worth getting angry about," the biggest insult possibly from his perspective. It went like this:"Dude, lady, you've only known me ten minutes. Don't act like you know anything about us or our friends." He rolled his eyes dramatically.
Even if he had a point, it was more than a little hypocritical. N'Barit was certainly behaving like he knew everything about Nikomas and Blackfell.
Then he found a reason to be angry again. "You're only saying that because you think your kid is so damn cute and special special everyone should want to play with it. I hate to break it to you, lady, but that's just not the case. Why don't you and your little dirty, unmannered whelp go bother some other people." N'Barit made sure to end with his glare fixed on Blackfell, just to make it clear he had neither forgiven nor forgotten the boy.
Instead, he had somewhat forgotten Kirkcaldy, who just sighed and copied n'Barit's eye roll. That surfer voice was funny, but it was gone too soon and replaced by the angry tone. Why n'Barit couldn't talk to other people the way he did her, she did not know. She only knew that with n'Barit watching Blackfell more closely, she could no longer make any attempt to play with him. "Look," she said, reaching her hand up to n'Barit's hair and running her fingers through it. Her definition of the word was a tad incorrect.

That made the angel explode. "It? And of course he's special, just as much as your daughter is, otherwise neither of us would have the responsibility of caring for them. Every child is special, and if you can't see that, then you apparently have a few screws knocked loose." She said, her anger mounting all over again, though she did spare a glance for said daughter saying the word 'look,' though it made little sense.
Fell, in return to the glare, stuck his tongue out. "Nyah." He gave the man the rasberry, but gave Kirkcaldy a fast grin before sliding quickly under the bench, stirring up a small cloud of dirt around n'Barit's legs. If he wanted dirty, Fell could provide that in plenty, though he did at least hope it didn't get in Kirkcaldy's eyes.

The dirt did not bother n'Barit -- not any more -- but it still rankled. That was as potent an insult as one could make in the Yuulani culture. Furthermore, a different wind and the dirt could have touched Kirkcaldy! "Hey!" snapped n'Barit, tightening his grip on Kirkcaldy. Bugger, the boy was out of his reach under the bench. He would just have to keep his efforts on the mother. He huffed at her, "I hate to break it to you but not all kids are special! Some are dumb, some are ugly, some are weak and puny. Some, like yours, are all three! We can't all be Tuulani, someone has to be Yuul!"
In his arm, Kirkcaldy gave a little squeak of dismay. N'Barit's grip wasn't anything painful or upsetting, it was just reflective of his level of alarm, a protective instinct. Unfortunately, the tightening grip usually precipitated n'Barit striking at someone. It was a good thing his crutch was still on the bench.

Fell clambered up behind the bench, squatting down to peer through the boards. He gave Kirckaldy a big, impish grin and a little thumbs up. He wasn't really sure what he could do right now, but making this man turn red was fun, though his mom would probably get mad later.
The angel's eye twitched slightly as he spoke; she hadn't a clue what on earth he was talking about. Tuulani? Yuul? Some of her irritation drained out of her, simply because she had never been able to be confused and angry at the same time. Crossing her arms on her chest, she shifted her feet so she was balancing on one of her heels. "I hate to break it to you, but some kids and people also aren't from your world. Would you care to explain with your supposedly superior intellect what Tuulani and Yuul are?" She had noticed the tightened grip, and in response the muscles in her shoulders and wings bunched, tensed and ready to snap open if need be.

N'Barit, as much as he loved to argue, was far past being helpful. "No," he said, with the kind of smug smirk that clearly meant "I'm being a jerk to you and it's intentional." His arms finally relaxed at his perceived victory for knowing something this inferior did not and he shifted Kirkcaldy in his arms, moving her weight to a different spot.
Over n'Barit's shoulder, Kirkcaldy smiled sunnily to Blackfell. She was happy the danger was gone. Sure, n'Barit had been mean again, but at least he was being mean and happy. That was far better than mean and angry.
N'Barit added ridiculously, "Given the context, anyone with half a brain could figure it out." He was probably having far too much fun insulting Nikomas.

Niko glowered at the man again, a tick becoming apparent in her eye as her anger rose again. Insufferable, conniving, dirty little- The thought went through her head, but she stopped it, taking a calming breath. She didn't say a word, instead just walked over to Blackfell, grabbing his hand and swinging him onto her back.
One she had her son, she turned back to n'Barit. "I won't say it was a pleasure to meet you. I will say, though, that I pity your daughter." She turned slightly to look at Kirkcaldy, and gave her a small smile. "It was nice to meet you, at least. You're a pretty girl." The angel said, before looking back at Kirk's "father." She didn't say anything, just turned on her heel and walked away. There was nothing she could say that would either get across his thick head or wouldn't be bad to say in front of children.
((Ehh, kinda crappy way of walking off gonk ))

N'Barit grinned to himself, an expression caught only by Kirkcaldy as she turned her head to watch Blackfell leave with his mother. Her smile was bright, the upset of the moment lost on her, Nikomas's anger and frustration a completely adult and therefore foreign affair from her perspective. Her smile was the last thing Blackfell saw of her as n'Barit whisked her away to the newly-conquered park bench and collapsed Kirkcaldy's world back into one that contained only the two of them.
((No crappier than n'Barit's treatment >>;;; Thank goodness for Daub. He's as kind as n'Barit is mean!))
