Book Of Mormon anyone?
  I've read it.
I never intend to read it.
I'd have to learn a bit more about it before I read it.

Well said, Kipluck. I think that Joseph Smith did indeed restore the Church. And about the tablets, I've often wondered what had happened to them, but I was always sort of afraid to ask; I was worried I'd offend my friend.

John Smith? Um...the John Smith helped found Jamestown in 1607, and (according to the innacuracies of the Disney film of Pocahontas) was almost my ancestor.

I've been to the Joseph Smith Homestead, and walked through the Sacred Grove. There is definetly a feeling I get there that always moves me to tears. I can't deny that feeling; it's the same one that I get when reading the Book of Mormon and the Bible.

If you want to have a headache, visit these two sites.

www.josephlied.com
www.josephtoldthetruth.com

They both point out very good facts, and from what I can understand, are pretty faithful.

I have a few more questions, Kipluck (or whoever else wants to answer).

First, I understand from looking at the very opening pages of the Book of Mormon that there were originally four distinct groups of plates that were in one way or another involved with the Book of Mormon. They are the Large (secular) and small (spiritual) plates of Nephi, the plates of Mormon which are an abbridgement of the large plates of Nephi, the plates of Ether which are an account of the Jaredites, and brass plates that contained the Torah and a history of the Jews.

I don't quite understand what plates comprise the individual books in the Book of Mormon. Why is there a need for an abridgement of the original and full accounts?

Also, if Mormon had the original plates to abridge, why weren't they included with the bundle of plates that Moroni burried? Do we know anything about what happened to the plates not directly included in the Book of Mormon?

Also, I heard that after Joseph Smith finished transcribing the Book of Mormon, and after Moroni took back the plates, the original transcript of the Book of Mormon was somehow lost or destroyed. After this, Jospeh Smith rewrote the entire thing again, from memory. Is this what truly happened? What is the Mormon view on the accuracy of that "second take"?

Actually, that's a misconception and/or regional rule, depending on who you ask. Originally the rule (which was never a law) was "no hot drinks." Both coffee and tea, the two most common hot drinks during the frontier era had caffeine. Soda, the other major drink containing caffeine did not become popular for another several decades. Now, the reason I said it depends on who you ask, is because alot of Mormons themselves don't drink caffeine due to confusion over this same rule, but like I said, it was originally no hot drinks... not no caffeine.

I happen to know alot of Mormons who drink soda, and some who will even drink tea. Coffee still seems to be taboo, but it's not forbidden. Like I said, it's not a law, simply a rule or standard.

Huh. Didn't know that! Okay. Good thing I don't like coffee much, though! biggrin Thank you for the information there!

I admittedly know very, very little about Mormonism, but out of curiosity, a few months back I had the Book of Mormon mail-ordered to me( it was free, what the heck) and I plan to read it once I get The Holy Bible finished, just so I'm not ignorant.

Dorkfishy
I forget-- do mormons have a different version of the bible than other religions?
Yes and No.

Most often when people refer to the "Mormon Bible" they aren't talking about the Bible at all, but rather the Book of Mormon.

One thing we (oh, and when I say we, just know that I am Mormon, and I am trying to represent the general teachings of the Church, but am not perfect at it) believe is that there are more scriptures than just the Bible. The Bible is a collection of records kept by people by direction of God... the Book of Mormon is too... a record of people that we believe came over to what is now the Americas back in Bible TIMES who also saw Christ when he was ressurected.

BUT, assie from the confusion between the Book of Mormon and Bible, some of us DO use a LITTLE different Bible than other faiths.

Most Mormon people use the King James Version. However, in the US a lot of us use an "LDS version" of the KJV with footnotes and study guides that link to translations by Joseph Smith, definitions, and other scriptures. However, most LDS people outside the US do not use this and just go with a KJV in their language.

EXCELLENT Questions. Please, someone answer them.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't Mormonism a cult? I once read that somewheres...Probably somewheres in Gaia, in fact. sweatdrop
