anwho, i've got some good news for shade. last month guitar world did an issue to commemorate fallen heroes, and, true to form, dime and randy rhoads were on the front. but also, in BIG letters, they advertised an article about chuck schuldiner. i bought the magazine cuz i was curious as to what they had to say about him (since their fan base has probly not heard of him). i was pleasantly surprised to find that the article on chuck and death was the longest, most in depth article about a metal legend in that issue. its length and detail was only exceeded by the article on duane allman/interview with dickey betts. so although chuck wasnt on the cover, he is at least getting some recognition
course, chuck shoulda been on the cover - they didnt even have an article about randy rhoads, just a two page info-session about his signature guitar and a guy who owns one of randy's originals.

It's one of my greatest annoyances I bring up a topic about Pantera and some loser ALWAYS has to come in and go "OMG LOLZ RIP DIMEBAG" it's like "what the ********?" I'm trying to talk about the band Pantera not just their dead guitarist.
But yes, Dime is an over-rated guitarist. I'm not saying he wasnt a great guitar player, but he was just over-rated.

Okay! I have created a theory...Which, in addition to the "Pokemon Theory" (which states that, if you do not know what sound an animal makes...you simply say its name), might top the record for stupid things people believe.
"When someone dies who was either: in a band, an artist*, president*, had a natural talent for juggling, or had an extra set of limbs, THEIR IMPORTANCE MAGICALLY BECOMES RAISED AFTER THEY DIE!"
....*silence*
'Cause, you know, once someone dies...they magically become better at what they do. *nods* Duh. I mean, for all those people worshiping dead people from bands JUST BECAUSE they were in a band...I give you strength to support your stupidity (must be a real strain, eh?) I mean, OF COURSE, if the musician was TALENTED, that is another thing completely...but...well..."Talent", people, is the key word ^^ PRAISE THE DEAD FOR THEIR SKILLAGE!
But...I guess we all have what we think is "talent"...a style we prefer...So, someone might think a certain person is talented, another may not... If a person was good when they are alive, their music is JUST AS GOOD when they are dead! IT. DOES. NOT. GET. ANY. BETTER. (Death'll do that to ya...)
Also, you ever notice how a musician is suddenly "well known" once they die? How useless is that? They aren't even alive to enjoy it And, also, this has to do with what "Hollow" said...Somehow, once a musician dies...THE REST OF THE BAND DIES TOO?! O.O All people talk about it the dead guy, and the rest of the band is somehow insignificant. Drives me crazy!!!

Any death is tragic. What's even more tragic is when a musician (guitar player, bass player, the guy playing the tambourine off in the corner) passes away during his prime, before we really get a chance to experience the awesomeness they were about to bestow on us.
Darrell Lance Abbott (aka Dimebag Darrell) was one of the most influential guitarists of our time. He helped to shape the sound of the legendary Pantera, making it one of the most popular metal bands of the 90s. Contrary to what durrypoo posted, it wasn't "because of the horrible music of Suckage Plan that Doushebag got shot," it was because the killer blamed Dimebag for the Pantera breakup. Phil Anselmo was, at the time, seriously addicted to heroin, making it much harder for the rest of the band to work with him. Not seeing any other way to resolve the situation, Dimebag and his drummer brother Vinnie Paul left the band to form Damageplan. So it was really Anselmo that triggered the split, a fact that he denies repeatedly in his heroin-induced alternate reality.
It's oddly amusing that Dave Mustaine originally approached Dimebag about coming into the Megadeth fold prior to the recording of "Rust In Peace." It would have been most interesting to hear exactly what would have come out of that monster, but Dimebag insisted that Mustaine bring his brother Vinnie Paul into the band as well. Since Dave had already brought Nick Menza on board, Dimebag chose to stay with Pantera.
Was he an overrated guitarist? That depends on your personal opinion. I wouldn't go so far to call him my hero, but I think his contribution to the metal world will live on for many many years to come.

i dont think dime was "one of the most influential guitarists of our time" - his stuff is fairly straight-up metal, nothing really new and different. i do like some of it, but he was certainly no great innovator like hendrix, clapton, or some of the other guitar heroes. he didnt invent a new sound like tony iommi or johnny ramone or chuck berry. yes i know that only iommi is a metal guitarist, but, victum soul, im making a point here that needs some reference points outside of metal, so please dont complain about it.
how good dime was is debatable. personally, i liked CFH, and some select songs off pantera's - later albums, but he was NOT one of the most influential guitarists of our time.

He was responding to the non-metal stuff that I had placed in my original message. I have since edited the message and removed the offensive material. Hope this clears up any confuzzlement smile
