Wellies are short for Wellingtons - a type of rubber boot made in England and Scotland. They are very sturdy and well made, and can be used for work as well as riding (but make sure you ride in safetly stirrups, as the the boot can be chunky and wider than a normal riding boot). I own a pair of Ariat wellies, and they are a godsend during the winter mud season. wink

My first lesson was at Camp Rim Rock. As soon as I sat in the saddle, I dunno, it felt natural, and I wasn't trying to find my balance or doing other crazy stuff like the other girls. And I was happy 'cause they let us trot, and since I've been reading about horses forever, I found it easy to post. I remember feeling so proud, until, of course, Rosie bucked. Since it was my first time riding, I wasn't exactly sure how to get her under control. I knew that I was supposed to get her head up, but it was HARD. I remember the instructor was yelling at me to sit back and turn her in tight circles until she stopped. I was so shaken up 'cause I'd nearly fallen off, but I'm kinda glad she bucked- even though it was because a horse fly had landed on her rump, because it gave me some experience.
..Still, I don't think I was really confident on a horse until I was riding another one- a gelding named Sparky.

I don't remember my first lesson. But I do remember this horse that was really nice named Sebastian. When I was little I used to carry around this plastic horse around wherever I went. [[Literally everywhere, even to bed...]] So this lady noticed me playing with it at Starbucks. So she started talking to my dad, and later, she took me to the nearest stables in the area to show me her horse. She also gave me a little doll... She was really nice to me... I think that was my earliest horse expierience. Other than the pony rides at the fair.

Yeah they are rain boots. I had no idea you didn't call them wellies in the States (I'm from Ireland) those were ordinary wellies (The Little Mermaid actually hehe) You can buy horseriding brand ones though, do you have the Joules brand in the States?

I can't remember if my first lesson was on a mare called Spyder, or another called Peaches. But anyways, we started on the lunge line, did some trot work (I had ridden 2 or 3 times before this on payed trail rides, and had figured out how to post) so we worked on diagonals. At the end of the ride, she let me trot on my own for 5-10 minutes before cooling out. We did a lot of stuff with the tack at the start and end, and thats all I remember.

I can't remember my first lesson but my first time galloping I remember. It was on a gelding chestnut horse, he was a 17 year old school horse. I felt really great but when he gallop I fell and that was also the first time my dad was watching, I know my instructor said that it was not a big deal falling and that even the best riders fell. After that I climbed on his back again and I wanted to gallop again and this time I stayed in the saddle. That was also the first time I fell from a horse but not the last time, I have fallen so many times and I don't mind, sometimes it's funny. Especialy when the horses is looking at you with a what are you doing face.

I must have been 6? 7? Something like that but it was on this gray Arab (or arab cross) gelding named Kelley. I was taking lessons the same time as my mom, ooo she got in so much trouble. What strikes me strange now is that was never on a lunge line till 3 years later after I was getting into my lessons at a different barn... Not that we did anything too strenuous with Kelley just some walk, trot and posting (I thought 'post' was the funniest thing becase it has nothing to do with mail... I was an insightful bizarre little child)

I'm not sure how old I was, but I was little. I think I was on a black shetland named Axel (who's still around) and I had to use a western saddle, which I didn't enjoy.
Eventually I moved up to an evil little grey Australian Pony mare name Littl'ly (still around) who reared. I didn't fall off though. whee

I don't remember my first time riding, but my first lesson as in I got something taught to me was when I was around four and I remember quite vividly thinking the instructor was crazy. I rode a little QH pony named Buster (or something of that nature) and was in this huge western roping saddle (I remember the horn be gigantic!) with buddy stirrups and the instructor was trying to get me to say, "whoa!" really loud and deep. Yeah - I never did get above a whisper, I was a shy little girl. : P

My second lesson was with the same pony and instructor and about half way through it Buster spooked at something and took off to the other side of the arena. My mom was yelling and when they finally got the pony stopped I was giggling like a mad child.

My Black Butterfly
Lets see... My first riding lesson was on a black Quarter Horse named Thunder. I was riding and I fell in love with him and his stable mates right away. He tought me how to trot, canter and do small jumps. He is now 32 and doesn't do lessons any more but his owner/trainer lets her 3 year old niece ride him. He is such a gentle beast.

My first lesson was cold, I remember it was COLD!!! I rode a pony she wasn't a little little one like a medium pony, and we did walking keeping her on the rail that kind of boarding stuff. So yeah, and the next was better 'cause I rode a little pony and she got spooked and she took off across the arena. x3 It was fun. Haha.

I have a new first lesson story.
So I recently switched barns after 6 months off. I had taken a tour so I knew who to look for. We pulled my horse out, lunged him and I hopped on. We went though all three gaits and I felt like crap. I don't have the muscle strength to get him to get under (So many little kids have ridden him that he won't listen to subtle commands) so I have to wear spurs which is quite sucky since I hate using artificial aids.
It's so strange switching from open hunters to Arabs. So many more gadgets!
