WHen it comes to picking out anime based on previews I prefer the ones that give me the plot, introduce a couple characters but not all, and give me a few good clips from the anime, whatever type it is, using music or loud sound effects to draw in my attention. The preview can't be too glossy, meaning that it has a deep voice narrator that has nothing to do with the anime and too many action or romance clips.
Just give me the gist of the show, with an intersting bang to it and I'll want to watch it. Sure it depends on the type of anime, because I am a bit picky about style, genre, and general plot. But that needs to be inserted in there so I know what the preview is about. And unless one of the characters is the narrator, let there be none. And if you have a narrator in there don't make them talk through the whole thing unless it's short and to the piont. Random clips are good too.
I personally like watching trailers on anime DVD's after I've watched the anime I bought the DVD for, just to see what else looks intersting. I'm a buy in the moment kind of person and I like to always have a new intersting story in my head. The more the merrier. Sort of. Anyway, like other people have already said it depends on who is watching it, what genre it is, and how it comes across entertainment wise.
