Trick or treat? (2)

So we went into this old abandoned house.
The door was closed, but the fence was broken so we sneaked in. Gwena was worried because she said it wasn't allowed to go into someone else's house, and I said no, because the house was abandoned, everyone knew that. And if we didn't take anything, it couldn't be a crime, right?
We got in via the back door. Inside it was all dark and dusty, and we couldn't see much. It was sort of a kitchen. I told Gwena that maybe they ate humans there, and when I started talking she jumped up and said I'd scared her. I laughed, and it echoed... weird. So I shut up at once.
Outside of the kitchen it was even more dark. I found some stairs and followed them up to a dark corridor, and then a dark study. It was all full of shelves with big leather-bound volumes. The room had a weird, eerie feeling, so I got away quickly. I wanted to tell Gwena that we should get out (not because I was afraid, just because it was getting late) but I couldn't see her. I called out for her but she didn't answer.
I got worried and started thinking that maybe she'd run away in fear, so I got down on the first floor again, and into the kitchen, and out into the cold night air. I still couldn't see her, so I called out once or twice but she didn't answer.
So I took a deep breath and turned back to the house: I decided to go back in and look for her. But then she jumped out from under the kitchen table.
"Boo!" she cried. "I got you!"
I got really angry and walked out of the house. Then I pretended she hadn't scared me, but I don't know if she believed me.
Apart from this, it was a good night and we got a load of sweets.
Aiko got back really tired, she had grey skin and deep shadows under the eyes. She said she felt like a zombie because they'd spent the whole night chasing bunnies. That must've been boring!

Down with flu

It's been ages since I wrote anything, but I caught flu.
I had to stay at home for a whole week, with nothing but a stack of comics to keep me going.
When I finished them, Gwena got me a book from the library. I'm not much of a bookworm but I read it anyway since she'd borrowed it especially for me. In the end it turned out that the book was very interesting! It was a story of the Hououzas, their culture and everything.
The most interesting part was the one about flying. I can't wait to be able to fly around.
I also searched the book for any hint about the medallion I found last month, but I couldn't find anything. It's still a mystery.
Now I want to get out, I'm tired of being indoor.

Growing up

Today I grew up!
I wake up feeling all different, and when I looked into the mirror I saw I was taller than the previous evening.
My wings also are bigger and stronger.
I tried aroun a bit in my room and knowcked out some books from a shelves. Luckily tere was nobody around, because Aiko would have skinned me alive for doing that to a library book. I replaced them on the shelves and remembered that Aiko and Gwena had gone out to do some early Christmas shopping.
I was feeling too excited to stay in and wait for them to come back, so I went outside.
I met a boy a bit older than me. His name is Shiro and he's an artist. I think he should meet Gwena, they could start a club and talk artsy things all day long.
But Gwena was weird when she saw me, I suppose it's because I'm so tall now and she's quite short.
Aiko squealed when she saw me. It was really, really embarrassing.

The note

"We've got to celebrate," said Aiko, dropping the parcels she was holding on the kitchen table and smiling at Carl. "Now what could we do?"
"There's no need to get all over-excited," muttered Carl, looking at his feet but feeling secretly pleased.
"I'll tell you what, we'll get pizza this evening!" exclaimed Aiko.
Carl grinned. "That's your idea of a special evening?"
She shrugged and picked up the phone. "If you'd rather have a cake and some nice home-cooked food, you'd better learn how to cook my lad. You know I don't go further than boiled eggs," she added, grinning.
"Pizza is perfect," said Carl. "Onions for me."
"And I'll get a pepperoni one," said Aiko, dialling the number. "Oh, Gwena, what do you want?"
Gwena who was gazing out of the window, looked startled.
"It's the same for me," she said vaguely.
"Are you alright?" asked Aiko. "You look a bit down, you're not getting a cold, are you?" she added, worried.
"I'm fine, really," said Gwena.

The next morning, when Aiko knocked at Gwena's door to wake her up, she didn't get any answer. On her bed there was just a small note.

Dear Aiko,
I really can't take it any longer.

I thought a lot about it, and I'll miss you and Carl. But I never had a family, and maybe I shouldn't have one, because I'm not normal.
It wasn't your fault, really, you tried your best to make me feel at home.

Thanks for everything, I'll love you forever.

Please don't come looking for me.

I'll find you!

Yesterday Gwena ran away.
I don't know why. Last time I saw her she looked a bit depressed, but I thought it was just because she was tired or something like that.
She's gone, leaving just a small note for me and Aiko. Aiko looks desperate, she keeps saying it's her fault. I don't think so. I think it's just Gwena's fault, and she shouldn't have gone like that, but she won't listen.
I thought Gwena would have returned home soon, but it's been more than a day and I'm getting worried too.
So I told Aiko I'm going to find her.
She complained and said I'd get lost too, but I don't care. I'm not a child anymore. I'll go and find my sister. My sister. That's what I consider her... She's the person closest to me, apart from Aiko, and I can't bear this. I need her back. Aiko will understand, I have to go.
I'm not sure about where I should go exactly, but I think she might be in a forest. That's just like Gwena.
I'll be off as soon as I'm done packing, Aiko will stay here in case Gwena comes back.

A journey

I'm very tired.
I decided to flew during my journey because it would be quicker. I had covered short distances easily, and I thought I could fly really well.
But flying is so tiring! My wings are hurting like hell, and so are my shoulders. I don't know if I'll be able to carry on flying tomorrow. I should take a rest, but I can't stand the idea of staying another day without Gwena. I'll manage.

The journey has been pretty uneventful up to now.
I flew past the forest next to the village, and then followed the river. Eventually it ended up in a small stream up into the mountains. I spent a couple of days climbing the mountains, it's freezing cold above the snowline level.
I'm halfway there, this evening I camped on the northern slopes. Today I hope to reach the valley below. I can see the lights of a village, I'll be able to buy food and write back to Aiko.
I hope Gwena is fine.

A journey (2)

Great news! Now I'm sure Gwena went this way.
I stopped at a tavern to get some food, and above the counter there was a drawing made by her. I could recognize her style anywhere.
I asked the barkeeper and he told me that a girl had come that way just the day before. Apparently she's selling sketches and paintings for a living.
I wrote back to Aiko immediately, telling her the big news.
If only I'd arrived earlier! She'd left 10, maybe 12 hours before my arrive, heading northeast along the main road.
If I fly I'll be able to reach her in a couple of days. I miss her so much!

A journey (3)

It's been so long since I last wrote something, but so many things happened...
I don't know how, but I got lost. I was following the track, flying just above it, and everything was fine. Then I realized the track was bending south, and thought it would have been quicker to head straight northwest and save some time.
So I went straight on until it was dark, but I felt so close to Gwena that I didn't stop to rest. Just before dawn I felt tired, so I decided to stop for a quick nap. Maybe I had overdone it, because as soon as I touched the ground I fell asleep in the open countryside and went on sleeping for hours.
When I woke up it was sunset already.
I looked at the dying sun and decided to go on, even in the dark.
It was a moonless night, but I thought I'd navigate by the stars. I followed the direction I thought was northeast for several hours, keeping an eye below be to see if I had reached the track, but I couldn't see anything apart from an endless plain.
When dawn came, I realized I had been flying in the wrong direction for at least eight hours. I was lost.

A journey (4)

When I realized I didn't know where I was, I panicked.
I soared high into the air, looking at the landscape below me and trying to pinpoint a location, a particular tree, anything that could point me to the right direction.
Nothing
I realized I had no clue, and I was lost in this endless plain, and I felt very sad and lonely. I though about Aiko and Gwena. Gwena! I was supposed to rescue her, but everything had gone wrong.
I felt like crying, but tried not to. Eventually I started flying in a random direction. I was thinking about nothing, trying to shut out the pain in my soul.
I can't remember how long I flied, one hour or several days. In the end I lost consciousness.

Gwena again

When I woke up I found myself in a small, comfy room, laying on a bed.
There were a couple of people watching me, and they smiled when I looked up. Gwena was among them.
"You're awake finally," she said. "You've made me really, really worried, you know?"
I wanted to say that I was the worried one, that she had started everything by running away from home and into this rural place forgotten by everyone. But then I saw her trying to wipe away a tear with her sleeve, and decided not to.
"Cheer up," I said, smiling. "Everything's ok."
She nodded, but didn't smile back. There were so many things I wanted to know, so many questions she could answer, but for the first time since I'd met her I found myself speechless.
I felt that was no time for questions. Finding Gwena again was everything I wanted right now. Questions could wait.
The other people had left the room, leaving us alone.
There was an embarrassed silence, and I racked my brain for something to say.
"So... are you ready to go back home?" I asked.
When she started crying, I realized that was the wrong thing to say.

Why?

I thought I'd never see Carl again, so when the men came back to the village carrying him I was about to faint.
I kept repeating myself that nothing had changed, that I wasn't going to go back, but in the end I broke down and started sobbing. I immediately wish I hadn't. It was clearly upsetting him, but I couldn't stop.
"What's wrong Gwena?" he asked in the end. "Now that I've found you, you're not going to run away, are you?" he said. "I've been very worried. And Aiko too. You've been away for nearly a month!"
I tried to dab at my eyes with my hankie, and shook my head.
"I can't go back," I whispered.
His mouth fell open. "But why?" he asked. He looked as if he too was on the verge of tears.
"I just can't. Please don't ask me anything else."
Carl opened his mouth to reply, but then shut it again and didn't say anything. He bowed his head. I'm sure he wanted to ask that question again. But why?
"I'm not coming back," I said.
"But I'm not going back without you," he said vehemently.
I tried to smile. "I was afraid you'd say something theatrical like that," I said.
"Yeah, I know," he replied. "But what else could I do? I'd geet lost if I tried to go back alone without a guide."
Suddendly I started laughing, and he laughed too.
And then I realized how much I'd really missed him during the last month.
"Ok," I said. "I'm coming back too."
