What in the world is a Declan?

Raife
The taxi pulled up in front of Aki's house and Raife stepped out, helping the boys out of the car. She had run out of carseats with her newest addition, and Mik wasn't quite to bike riding yet. Helping Mikhael to his feet, she dusted the little boy off, and patted his butt, setting him off on a quick toddle towards Aki's front door.

Then she turned to the little one, his butt plopped on the ground, his fingers already following after an ant. Snatching him up before he could get any messier, she scooped him up on her shoulder with a sigh. The child was strange. In the mornings, he insisted on being dressed as neatly as possible, yet by midday...he was already a wrinkled, dusty mess. She smoothed his hair and tried to make him presentable for the visit.

"Mikhael, pull down your shirt, you look silly." She chuckled, and adjusted the shirt for him as she came up behind him, the nice button down looking ridiculous on the petit toddler already without it riding up over his little tummy. "Wanna knock?" Mik looked up at her and she gestured with her fist the motion for knocking. Declan did the same in imitation. Mik knocked softly on the door, as if afraid to hurt it.

Aki
Lifting her head in surprise at the knock, Aki brushed the hair out of her face with the back of her hand...leaving a streak of flour. Elle was busy struggling with Levi's penmanship, so it was up to Aki to get the door.

Sliding the pan into the oven, she paused to wind the timer before trotting to the front of the house. The silhouette through the stained glass was as recognizable as a tiny knock...kneeling a bit, Aki pulled the door open with a little smile.

There was Mik, eyes as wide and blue as the very sky. What a cutie!! Glancing up at Raife, Aki smiled...following up with a slow double take. Was that...

"Is that...a baby?!"

Raife
"I swear to god, it was a book when I picked it up, but somehow, yes, it turned into a baby." Declan gave a long suffering sigh. There was something distinctly unbabylike about him, even if he couldn't yet even speak or walk. "Hi." Raife smiled sheepishly. "I wanted to talk to you. I hope this isn't a bad time."

Mikhael tugged on Aki's skirt, obviously wanting her attention back on him. Not only was he still getting used to sharing the attention with his new "little brother," but his "big brother" was inside, and he wanted to see him, and he was sure Aki'd know where he was. "Eeei." He rasped plaintively.

Aki
Aki's eyes got wider as Raife summarized the story, a small smile settling upon her lips. A baby? A book? What a small world! "...Well now." Raife seemed a bit unsettled...how best to approach this?

Reaching down for Mik, pausing to give the babe a long smile, Aki hefted him gently on one hip. "Wanna see Levi? He's studying, but I'm sure he can take a break." Mik was certainly growing up! He was almost baby weight!

Hearing noise from the hall, Levi finally poked his head out of his room...light glinting from his newly pierced ears. Grinning at Mik, he waved with one hand until Elle stepped out behind him. Sighing, Levi shared a shrug with his young friend and ducked back in to finish his paragraph.

"I'm sorry. Come in! What is his name?" Motioning to the coat rack in case Raife wished to carry less, Aki started down the hall. She didn't head for the living room and kitchen, though...instead, she angled for the bedrooms to the east. "And....his Daemon's name?"

Raife
Raife set down a bag full of assorted goodies. Baby things. And followed after Aki down the hall, hefting Declan better in her arms. Just when she'd gotten one babe out of arms, then came another. The child in question was currently exploring her earlobe, as he'd been since he'd been taken up. Every time she picked him up it was something different. Her nose, her eye, now her ear. She winced a bit as he tugged a little on a piercing. At least that would keep him busy. "Mmh, Declan. Dec. And the bat...thing...whatever is Reasoning. At least, that's what I was told." She hadn't paid any attention to Wren hardly at all.
Speaking of Reasoning, the bat was tucked invisibly in the folds of Declan's jacket, avoiding sunlight and daytime and napping peacefully.

Mik, on the otherhand, while settled neatly in Aki's arms, was squirming inwardly to get to Levi.

Aki
Bumping open the door to Levi's room with her hip, Aki smiled to see the lad just snapping his book closed. Elle was smiling patiently nearby, obviously a bit proud that the pirate and finished his lesson in time. Letting Mik squirm out of her arms, Aki lowered him directly to Levi.

He was ready to grab Mik, arms open just a little sider than his grin. Without a word, he toddled off....trying to carry the babe in his usual awkward manner. Nodding to Elle, Aki smiled as the girl followed quietly behind them. "There we go! This way!"

Pushing open the door at the end of the hall, Aki sighed at the broken stillness of the chamber. Desperate snored horribly, one ear flapping as the Daemon dreamed a little dream. Beside him, curled beneath a yellow blanket, Nisha slept soundly. Or at least, she had been sleeping soundly. Opening one eye at the intrusion, her tiny face scrunched as she glared at the intruders.

What was this, now?!

Raife
Raife peered curiously at the little girl. Declan peered curiously. With all of the peering, one could wonder if the pair of them ever did anything else. "Mmmh...HM." Raife's attention was peaked by the baby elephant. "So there's our little troublemaker, hmm?" She remembered the discussion she and Aki had had about such matters and was glad Declan's..whatever it was..and whereever it was..was small. She wiggled her fingers at the baby and smiled. "Hi there!"

Aki
Gazing distastefully at Raife, Nisha flicked her sleepy glare to the babe in her arms instead. Taking a longer look, her irritation seemed to fade...replaced by a distinctive shine as she saw Declan's glasses.

Those. Those were lovely.

One little hand crept out from under the coverlet, lips parted in awe as Nisha struggled to sit up. Jerking awake with a snort, Desperate lifted his trunk in sudden shock. What was wrong? Where was Nisha going? What had he been dreaming about?! For a moment, that same soft word echoed in his heart.

Want!

Smiling in relief as Nisha's face smoothed out, Aki shared a look with Raife. "So. Tell me everything."

Raife
"Well..I..." Raife paused then for a minute. Should she tell Aki everything? Why she'd been in the house? How she'd found her way through? The noises, the lockpicks, the dark...no, that wasn't necessary. "There was this old house...and this library...and I fell down a flight of steps...and....had sex with a book or something and then there was Wren, and then there was a baby..and a bat..and......" Raife shook her head. "I got hit on the head three times that night. I'm still not sure I've got it straight." She let Declan down onto the floor. He wasn't large by any means, but he was starting to get a bit heavy. He took the opportunity to examine a discarded button that had fallen on the floor.

With his mouth.

Aki
Leaning towards the edge of the bed, eyes wide with surprise, Nisha watched the babe num a button. Her button?! One hand flapping, she reached for it from a desperate height.

Planting himself on his bottom, sitting on the bed, Desperate tucked the end of his snout through the loop of Nisha's sash. Making sure she stayed put on the bed, he yawned widely...ears trembling as he stretched.

"He's very handsome, Raife. You had good booksex." Nodding solemnly, Aki looped one arm around her companions waist. For a moment, she watched the babes 'play'...smiling wider at the silent interactions. "So...what was his...you know. His lines. The scrap!" Letting her arm drop she waited expectantly...one brow climbing steadily higher.

Aki
"Yeah, he's a cute little thing, isn't he? Oh? Oh, the...that. Yeah. He likes to keep it with him. Lemme..." She leant down, her hand rummaging in the folds of his jacket, squeaking a bit as she touched something furry, then sighing as she remembered what it was. She'd seen the daemon tuck itself in there earlier on the car ride over. It didn't like the sun much. "Bat in there. Sorry. Mmmm..gottit." She drew out the piece of paper, eliciting a quiet noise of disapproval and squirming from Declan. "Yeah, yeah, yours." She read the paper to Aki.

After she finished, she scratched her head a bit. "It sounds a bit familiar, but I can't place it. Never did have a good memory."

Aki
Blinking slowly, still digesting half the picture that had been painted, Aki shook her head. "I have...no idea. Wow." She peered back down at the children, head shaking slowly.

"You know...babies are apparently rather easy to come by. We're lucky we've ended up with such interesting ones." Sighing, Ak suddenly perked...glancing wide eyed at Raife. "I forgot, I was cooking! Let me check my timer, I'll be back!"

Turning herself over onto her tum, Nisha finally slid off the bed...with more than a little help from her better half. Landing with a huff upon her bottom, she slapped her hands to the ground and crawled boldly forward.

"Bubahuh!!" One hand raised in questioning, she wobbled and lowered it quickly...leaning back onto her bum once more. See him answer that!

Quote:
"Raife"] Raife settled, watching passively. She didn't have to be as concerned with this one as she had had to be with Mikhael. He didn't seem to have problems with touching or being touched. Rather, he touched everything in sight. He wasn't ever overly friendly, but more than a might curious. As if to reinforce her thoughts, Declan reached out and grabbed Nisha's hand, patting it experimentally, then sniffing it, then sticking it in his mouth. Might as well involve all the senses. Raife chuckled and winced a bit. "Ew, Dec. I'm sure her hands are clean, but honestly."

Aki
Joke was on him, they weren't clean at all. After half an hour of thumb sucking and elephant cuddling, Nisha wouldn't have refused a bath. She didn't wrench her hand away though...rather, she watched in shock as he nummed on her very fingers. Wiggling them in disbelief, she began to make a decidedly unpleasant face.

Checking the timer, Aki pulled open the oven anyway...sighing in slightly abashed relief that all was well. There was still another 10 minutes, of course all was well! Strolling back to the bedroom, Aki gasped as Nisha yanked her hand carefully out of Declan's mouth.

Nisha wasn't done, though. She reached forward a tiny bit more...trying to smudge Dec's cheek, or hopefully reach those glasses. Cooing in hope, she prepared to slime the unsuspecting lad.

Aki winced.

Raife
Raife shrugged over at Aki. The boy deserved whatever he'd get. Other people's fingers were not meant for your mouth. Or so she'd been told. She supposed he wasn't entirely to blame, being a baby and all, but still. The boy instinctively scooted backwards out of the way of her fingers, and batted them out of the way, still getting a thumbful smear of his own slobber on his nose. His whole face scrunched up in disapproval before rubbing his hands over his nose and shoving her away. Her fingers hadn't tasted very good. He categorized that under the file in his brain she'd already occupied on sight.

thing = does not taste good. feels soft. squishy.

"Slobberfest." Raife chuckled.

Aki
Nisha's smile suddenly blossomed, her feet drumming a bit in amusement. A rather amusing person, this one was! Leaning forward a bit, she tried another option. "Ahnum. Ma."

Desperate hopped off the bed, sauntering over to the pair of babies. Sniffing towards Dec and his rumpled jacket, his stomped curiously. What was that smell?!

Aki winced as Desperate trumpeted in questioning, nudging the Daemon with her toe. "Quietly, please! Inside voice!" She didn't know why she bothered, the pair rarely listened. "Is Dec always so nice and quiet? You lucked out twice!"

Raife
"He probably smells the bat thing." Raife reached down and pulled open Dec's jacket, despite squirming hands from the young one, to reveal a small young bat, clinging to the lining of the boy's wrinkled jacket. "And he's not always quiet. This morning he screamed with delight and babbling when a cricket found its way into his crib in the morning and he got something new to examine. Practically pulled the thing apart. But, usually, yeah. I mean, I haven't had him for long, but...yeah." She pet the daemon softly before wrapping the boy back up tightly in his jacket.

Aki
"Oooh, she's...kinda cute!" Aki said this from the safe distance of about five feet. Nodding politely, she leaned back a bit for good measure. "Well, you two should spend some time together if this is new for both of you! What do you say Elle and I watch your little ones for a day or two sometime soon here, and you and Declan find something fun to do!"

Desperate wiggled with excitement, almost like a puppy at play. He sniffed towards Reasoning happily, trunk never getting closer than a few inches.

Nisha glared up at Desperate, willing him to leave with little more than a cold look. As the Daemon shuffled back a bit she peered once again at Declan...still burbling absently. Crawling forward, she wandered well into his space and flopped back on her bottom. Would he crawl away now?!

Raife
Dec didn't crawl away, rather, he lifted his legs and feet off the ground and levered, planting them onto the other baby's shoulders and rocking slightly, pushed her leg-distance away as best as he could. He didn't seem to mean to be mean or rough, but rather, just didn't seem to want her that close. Done with it, he pushed the button towards her, as some sort of ersatz peace offering.

"He's got the thing on a leash. it is kind of cute. And he's fairly independent. Not that I'm shrugging the idea off, but, he doesn't frankly seem to care one way or another about me unless he's investigating my nose or something."

Aki
"Well...you do have a stimulating nose." Nodding quietly, Aki was proud that she didn't even crack a smile. She was getting better at this!! "Think he'll be a doctor when he grows up?"

Gasping as his feet settled on her, Nisha was paused mid breath by the sight of the little button. Suspicious eyes lifting to Declan's patient face, Nisha's lashes lowered once again as she peered at her prize. Slow chubby fingers closed around it...little fist rising just as slowly to her mouth.

"No! None of that! Holding only!" Leaning down to bat the button away from Nisha's mouth, Aki pointed a warning finger at her daughter. "You know better, love."

Deciding to ignore her guardian completely, Nisha turned back to Dec...thrusting the button to him once again on a little palm. "Danah."

Raife
"As much as I didn't come here to mooch food, feeding them sounds like an excellent idea. I can never tell if he's hungry or not. He doesn't bother to say." She reached down and picked up Dec by his arms, gently, causing him to wiggle and pout a bit, irritated in the break in his "studies". "Eh, you. For all I know, you eat bugs when you "examine" the carpet. I don't trust babies when I can't see their mouths." She settled him back on his butt."There you go, buddy."

Aki
"My carpet doesn't have bugs!" Scooping up Nisha as she began to fuss, Aki settled the babe down on Desperate's back at the Daemon's prompting. Considering that 'prompting' usually consisted of strong nudges to the back of Aki's legs, she tended to oblige him.

Still steadying Nisha with one hand, even though she laid forward against the elephant's little back, Aki walked forward cautiously. As long as it kept Nisha from a tantrum, it was worth the trouble.

She pulled out her older highchair as well once they hit the kitchen...setting the two chairs up side by side at the head of the table. That way, the adults could sit across from each other but still have the babes close at hand. Settling Nisha in, plopping the dreamsphere down onto her tray to keep the girl entertained, Aki spun to the oven.

Desperate hummed hopefully as the warm smell wafted out. "Almost, just a few more minutes! So, what has he tried so far?"

Raife
"Tried? As in to eat? He'll stick anything in his mouth. He hasn't eaten anything yet. usually just likes to taste. But...well. He's a baby. I don't trust him." She slipped the little boy in the high chair.

It didn't go over well.

Declan kicked distemperedly and rocked the seat. It was clear that there wasn't anything entertaining or interesting enough for him in the chair. The bat inside his jacket squeaked at the sudden belligerent behavior, and jerked free of the jacket, whirling around anxiously. Raife sighed. "Okay, okay. Toy. Uhhmmmm....Here." She reached into her pocket and pulled out a big button. One of the extra ones that came with a jacket to fix it at a later date. "It's a different button." Declan didn't seem fully satisfied with this...he'd already had a button today.
But he sighed and nummed it anyway.

Aki
Watching in growing awe, Nisha reached for the button. Still no response. Mouth open the slightest bit, she simply watched the lad for a few more moments...totally confused as to what was wrong with him.

He had another treasure, a bigger one this time. Was that better than her? Suddenly wishing for the button that so consumed Dec's attention, Nisha's little hand slapped down onto the tangerine sized orb...holding it stubbornly out to distract the other child. What she had was better! See? Somehow, his narrow focus was beginning to make her doubt.

Pulling the loaf pan from the oven, Aki blew across the top...sending steam curling from the hot peach cobbler. She'd been rattled by the sudden explosion of flapping from the bat, and tried to steady herself as she bumped the door closed again.

Chatting over one shoulder as she spooned cobbler and ice cream into bowls, she trusted Raife to keep an eye on the kids. "Do Mik and Dec get along? Mik is quiet, but he's certainly got some opinion to him, doesn't he?!"

Raife
Raife furrowed her brow, ignoring the kids to the point where she'd know if they were doing something dangerous, but didn't care what they did much else. They'd been around each other for a few minutes and hadn't broken out in a brawl. To Raife, that was a good day. "I'm beginning to think Mik's never going to like having a roommate. Honestly, I thought, hey, I'll move Cray out and Dec can be in that room, since Cray's getting a little bigger now and they don't get along anyways, but Mik started crying for Cray, and....ugh. I have no clue." She shook her head. "He may be the sweetest, kindest little boy, but yes. He does have his opinions, and they best not be crossed or the whole world hears about it. So I moved Cray back in and Dec's in my room for now."

Dec would very well have been interested in the orb, had he seen it, but he, indeed, was not paying attention to the poor girl or her wares. He was far too busy directing his baby attention span towards the button, which was now rolling unheathily around in his mouth.

Aki
Leaning as far to the side as her high chair would permit, Nisha reached with her free hand towards the lad...little fingers grabby. The orb slipped out of her other hand and onto her tray heavily, forgotten. Obviously, there was something far more interesting going on where he was sitting. She wanted in on it!

Desperate was looking a bit nervous, flinching every time Reasoning zoomed by. Every time the little Daemon completed another circuit, he would flap his ears and squint. What was this now?! He tried to use the inside voice to ask Reasoning, since Aki didn't like loud noise...but it was a bit tricker than he could manage. He settled for a honk instead, and got booted by his guardian gently.

"Hush!" The ice cream had cooled the peach cobbler, melting a bit at the edges. Setting a bowl in front of Raife, she held the other one with a smile. "Should we give Dec his own? It's up to you, I have a hose! Oh, and I saved the a bowl for Levi and Mik!"

Her smile faded as she watched Dec gumming on something with fading interest. One brow raising, she gave Raife a half second look before a tentative smile...which in the mommy world clearly meant 'that is a button and should be removed from the child's mouth at earliest convenience.' She scooped a bite of ice cream and peach slime from her bowl and blew on it gently...poking it towards Nisha's pink cheeked face.

Ooh, food! Surprisingly, Nisha relented in her pursuit of Declan...mouth opening absently for a spoonful of dessert. Desperate grumbled, chewing along with Nisha though he had no food in his mouth. Eyes bright with hope, he shifted his weight from foot to foot.

Raife
"Give him his own bowl, but barely fill it. He's not a big eater anyway, and if he does finish it, he can always have more. He IS messy." Raife, being about as motherly as a rock, did not comprehend the look. "What? Do I have something on my face?" She rubbed at her chin as if expecting to find something there. "This smells really really good, by the way. I love peach cobbler." She dug in whole heartedly, lifting an overflowing forkful of all assorted goodness to her lips and gorging.

Declan, on the other hand, seemed to handle the button situation on his own. He spit it out of his mouth, sniffing it a bit. A new internal file.

thing = hard, non-chewy, circular, small.

Of course, he couldn't have articulated these words even if he'd been able to speak, but his brain knew more than he seemed to yet. His fist closed around the button and he delicately placed it on the edge of his tray before suddenly slapping it away with a small smirk.

Aki
Serving Dec a Dec sized portion, Aki gave him one of the soft spoons to use. Nisha was ready for another bite, and took it as soon as Aki returned...still watching the large button as it clattered to the floor. Chewing thoughtfully, ignoring her guardian as she wiped a cloth across her chin, Nisha finally comprehended what was going on.

The button....was on the floor.

Eyes filling with tears, her lips parted....little chin trembling. Glancing up, Aki gasped...hurrying to scoop another bite onto the spoon. Wait, that wasn't the problem! She still had a bite in her mouth, which in all likelihood wouldn't be there much longer. Grabbing the cloth, Aki caught the ice cream dribble as the wail began.

Eyes squinting closed at the noise, Desperate winced again. He hated it when she cried! As was his habit, he trundled over to retrieve the fallen object...but a button was a bit hard for a baby elephant to pick up! Nosing at the floor, he whined with worry. Poor Nisha!

"Honey, what's wrong?!"

Raife
Declan didn't seem to notice her wailing or anything, but rather, was arm deep in the bowl of cobbler already, his little hands plunged into the bowl, making it obvious why Raife had wanted so little in the bowl. He wasn't eating yet, but rather exploring textures, sniffing, and occassionally rolling it around in his mouth. Finally, he swallowed a bite. The cycle continued with every bite, and Raife rolled her eyes, peering down into the confusion Nisha was causing, trying to find something to do to help. She paused, leaning over, to flick off a huge piece of crust from Dec's chin.

Aki
Leaning forward to peer over the side of the chair, worried Desperate might be picking on her out of view, Aki's eyes went wide at his scrabbling for the button. Moments later, she'd retrieved it...and the wail settled down into loaded sniffles. "I'm...sorry, Raife. I...I'll make sure to get it back before you go."

Opening her mouth reluctantly for another bite as she snuffled and hiccuped, Nisha turned the button over in her hands slowly. Munching on the cobbler bits against her most eager teethbumps, she finally scowled at the buttonprize. It was boring! In almost the same motion, she banished it from her tray.

Instantly, Aki retrieved it...and watched it be batted away two more times. Finally giving up, she set it on the counter with a sigh. "I'm so confused. Here, Desperate." Setting a mixing bowl full of whole apples down upon the seat of a chair, she offered the Daemon some lunch. It wasn't cobbler, but he seemed happy enough!

"Anyway, sorry. Wow, look at him dig! Declan is totally going to be a doctor. Or a cannibal." Again with the straight face. So proud!

Raife
"With the sheer disregard he has for people, I might be inclined to go with the second." Raife chuckled, watching the little boy, who had graduated into just eating now, although still at a rather slow pace. "He's a strange child. Healthy. Unscarred. But strange. Very very strange. Sometimes he'll look at me...and I'll feel intimidated. By a baby! He can't even speak yet, or use a toilet! And yet..." She shook her head. "That probably sounds pretty psycho." She smiled at Nisha and leant near her highchair. "Sweetheart, he pays that much attention to everything. If you get upset every time he examines something, that's going to be a lot of tears." She didn't care if Nisha understood or not. Wasn't really the point.
Declan, after finishing his share, finally looked up from his work to the people around him. He settled back in his chair and started to watch with that same disturbing look that Raife had just explained. His eyes would lock on one person's, then another's, staying just long enough to be uncomfortable, then moving on as if he hadn't done anything.

Aki
Aki agreed as the boy's gaze fell upon her...the tips of her ears dipping somewhat as she hurried for another bite. Nisha, however, seemed to perk right up...peering with as much interest as Declan as he seemed to give everything else. Her features clouded as he glanced away again, eyes settling with vague distaste on the cobbler bowl. She didn't acknowledge Raife's words in the slightest.

Aki did though. Nodding, she tried to get Nisha to eat another bite...and ate it herself after she failed. "I think this is rather new for her. Might be a noisy lesson...sorry again." Sighing, she finished her bowl and set it aside...pointing towards Raifes with a smile. "Seconds? I'm glad everyone liked it! Oh, should I call Mik and Levi in, or...would they rather play and eat it cold?"

Raife
"It's alright." Raife smiled. "I'm used to crying babies, after Mikhael. This one's so...even tempered, I'm just waiting to find out what sets him off. He even puts up with Cray's squealing without making a face, and when I'm in a mood, that makes me want to cry. And, no thanks. I'm quite full." Raife patted her tummy. "That was delicious." Declan studied his fingers absently before turning his gaze to Aki, giving her a longer study this time. He didn't seem to be directly looking at her eyes this time, but everywhere else on her face. Her nose, her mouth her ears -earning a curious little noise, as if he instinctively noticed they were different- and even down to her eyelashes.

Aki
Little head nodding as the cry outbalanced the cobbler, Nisha yawned and blinked a bit owlishly. She never stayed awake for more than a few hours at a time...Aki was used to her frequent naps. "Aww. I'm going to get her washed up and put her down for a nap. Make yourself at home, I'll be right back."

Lifting Nisha from the chair, giving the girl a bounce as the babe gazed with sleepy half lidded eyes at Dec, Aki motioned for Desperate to follow. With her free hand, she moved the orb from Nisha's try to the table. "You can show him that if he gets bored! Okay." Drifting off down the hall, Aki stopped first in the bathroom to wash Nisha's hands and face. Swishing his tail against Raife as he passed, the Daemon fluted a brief farewell.

Raife
Raife patted the Daemon's back softly as he passed, and then turned to her charge. She wiped his face neatly of extra peach and smoothed a little bit out of his hair before brushing it neat. "You have a lot of hair for a baby, you know that? And what's with those glasses, anyway?" She gently pulled them off his face to clean them. "What baby wears glasses?" He blinked owlishly and looked around the room. "They left, as I'm sure you noticed. Honestly, it's like the rest of you can't keep quite up with that brain up there. Hey. You." She pointed at the bat, who was still flying in circles."Calm down, will you?" As if the bat understood, it swooped down and settled back down on the outside of Dec's jacket.

Aki
"Just one more minute!" Calling softly as she poked her head into the hall, Aki hurried back to Nisha's side...patting her back gently as she fussed and tried to get to sleep. Desperate settled down as well, though he wasn't tired...he was always steadfast at Nisha's side.

A bit longer than one minute later, Aki tip toed back out...settling down at the table again with a smile. "Hey! Ugh, sometimes I don't know what to do with her. I know babies can be difficult, but she honestly won't settle down without getting what she wants. I hope she grows out of it soon, I have yet to win a battle of the wills!"

Leaning forward a bit, Aki let her worry go in a sigh...propping her chin in her hand as she gazed at Dec. She'd settled down right by him...and she was hoping he wouldn't mind, since he seemed to like to take such a close look at new things. She wanted to get a better look at him as well! "Hi there, cutie! Aww, even your friend is being cute, hmm?" She was glad Reasoning had settled down, but still looked as though she half expected the Daemon to launch towards her face any moment.

Raife
Declan blinked at her owlishly, a bit disoriented-seeming without his glasses. He reached out and smooshed his hand on her face, running his hand over it, testing textures, his little fingers curling and spreading over bumps and curves of her face.

Raife chuckled. "This one's pretty stubborn too. Usually I give in though, because he usually seems to want ordinary things. He just...examines them in an unordinary way." She smiled and cocked her head at Aki's slightly concerned expression. "Not a bat fan? She's pretty friendly. Much more people oriented than her friend here." She set the cleaned glasses on the table.

Aki
Giggling as Declan pawed gently at her face, Aki turned her head to the side...bringing a tapered ear within reach. Since she'd been comforting Nisha, she'd taken her earrings out...no point in a mistake happening. "I don't mind bats...I suppose...in a way. She is cute." Admitting the last with a rueful smile, Aki leaned closer for Dec.

"Maybe the time of year has me jumpy. Put a blue and black striped scarf on the lad, and you've got a cheap halloween costume!" Wasn't that what the wizard on Nisha's movie looked like? "I still need to pick a costume for her...any ideas? Oh, maybe we can take them all trick or treating together!! If you're not already going with someone, that is..."

Raife
The ear, like everything else, was tugged as close as Dec could to his mouth. He wasn't nearly close enough to get it in, however, so he just sighed, and, after tugging a little more, he let go of her ear, his mouth, which had opened wide at intention, closed slowly on a soft noise. He arched an eyebrow, and then brought both hands down, slapping the highchair. And again. And again. As if he was starting a rhythmic drum beat. Raife rolled her eyes and scooped him out of the high chair and right onto Aki's lap, without asking. "I don't really have any neighbors...and neither do you, really..where would we go?"

Aki
"Well..." Opening her arms wide, Aki accepted the lad with a hug, mumbling happy greetings into his mussed hair. A genuine contentment settled over her...strong enough to make her try a little smile at the tiny Daemon. Bouncing him a bit, in the same rhythm he'd been hitting, Aki shrugged at Raife's question.

"We could go downtown! That seems safe, and a lot of the stores are open late for the little ones! Or we could go to the casino...I hear they have candy machines set up, and golden foiled chocolate coins! Ohh, I love those! They might be a bit young though...but Levi would like it. Hmm!"

Obviously still thinking, she changed patterns abruptly...bumping her knee up twice before settling down for three swings. Two more bumps, three more sways...she waited to see if Dec noticed.

Raife
"Maybe they are a bit young...I mean, Dec's not even one yet, I'd wager." She eyed the baby, as if she could gauge his age. "It might be nice for the older boys to go out though....Mik's never had a halloween before, and I bet Levi'd enjoy those gold coins for sure." She smirked a bit. "Levi doesn't even need a costume. Just his normal clothes and that cheeky pirate grin should get him anything he wants."

Dec seemed to tire of the swinging and bouncing after a while, or just tired in general, he curled into himself a bit on Aki's lap, tucking himself into his jacket, his little eyes blinking a bit. Raife looked triumphant and grinned and whispered. "He always falls asleep when I take his glasses off."

Aki
"You're right! I bet he'd prefer that anyway! Ooh, I'm sure he will be SO cute with Mik!" Settling down as Declan did, Aki was soon only rocking the tiniest bit...the unconscious way one held a tired babe. "Does he really? Aww, he's too much!" Speaking quietly, she moved to hand him back to Raife...looked like it was bed time.

"Thank you for coming by, and...well...showing me. Once the two of you are settled in, we can talk more about halloween plans." For a moment, Levi's laugh rang from the front yard...distant and muffled. Aki smiled. At least Mik would be easy to collect on the way out! Sleeping infants didn't make for the most social engagements, sadly. Aki knew this all too well.

Raife
Raife smiled, bracing the baby in her arms before standing. "Heh. Yeah...thanks for having me, and that delicious cobbler and being a source of entertainment for my children. Who needs TV when I have Aki's house anyway?" She grinned and shifted Dec so his head was on her shoulder. "There we go." She sighed as his jaw dropped slack and he drooled a bit on her shoulder. "Well, he's a normal baby in sleep, anyway." Her head turned towards the delightful happy noises from the front yard. She smiled softly. "I'm glad."

Aki
"You're lucky to have such sweet boys...and they're lucky to have a mom like you!" Aki made a sympathetic face and smiled, knowing what it was like to suddenly have a full nest. "Let's round up the boys, and get this one in bed."

Levi and Mik were down by the bridge it seemed...or so Aki guessed from the echo of rocks splashing into water. "Levi?" For several moments, all was silent...until finally the pirate came trudging into view with Mik not far behind. "Time to say bye, love!"

Smiling despite being a bit bummed about Mik leaving so soon, Levi trotted up to Raife and puckered up ridiculously. He wouldn't settle for anything less! After hopefully getting a little love, he scooped Mik up in a huge hug...grinning after setting him back on his feet. "Bye!"

"Bye guys! Congrats, Raife!"

Raife
Raife grinned, and laid a sloppy, exaggerated kiss on Levi. "That's the thing I like about this kid. Never too old for kisses. No girls have cooties stage." She ruffled his hair and straightened his bandana a bit before stepping aside so Mik could get his hugs. Levi swept him right up, his little legs dangling before he was set down again. He sighed exasperatedly at having to go, but lifted a hand to Raife. She took it and smiled at Aki. "Bye!" She waved to Aki as the cab pulled up for her to go even though I have no clue how it got there. <3

The Promised Land~

Pacing as he fretted, Desperate gazed down at Nisha...poking her gently with the tip of his trunk. She didn't even grumble, the babe was out cold. Her eyes moved behind her eyelids, eyelashes fluttering against her cheeks. She was dreaming, Desperate knew she was...it was her favorite thing, after all! She liked it a lot...even more than playing with him.

Whining to himself, the Daemon ignored the whisper of Nisha's slumbering...dropping his trunk to poke at her watch instead. That got a reaction, it usually did...rolling to the side, Nisha's brow furrowed. The watch disappeared between the pillow and the blanket.

Not good enough! Still bored, still lonely, the young pachyderm wandered dejectedly to the kitchen. His ears were low, and his tail didn't swish...he only poked half heartedly at the bowl of apples and oats Aki left out for him by the fridge. Sighing in sadness as something tugged uncomfortably within him, he drifted back to be closer to Nisha's side.

Why was she always dreaming? Sure, it could be anything, but what was wrong with what they had?! Wasn't the grass here green enough, and the butterflies pretty enough? Stomping back to the bedroom, Desperate decided to ask her just that.

He poked her in the tum. No response.

He ruffled up her hair! No response.

He tugged her half way up, almost into a sitting position. Still no response. She was fast asleep.

Turning in a few cumbersome circles, Desperate finally settled down onto his knees. Getting comfortable on the accommodating foam bed, he draped his trunk across her belly and closed his eyes. If she wouldn't talk to him...he would talk to her.

~.:.~

Slowly, the fog cleared, and Desperate found himself standing atop a rather high cliff. Below him, grasslands spread...dotted by an oasis, and a huge and spreading tree. Ribbons fluttered through the air like lazy serpents, and huge bubbles had taken the place of clouds.

Desperate trotted for the cliff, jumping out into the air and 'swimming' among the bubbles. He knew where he was going, she always went to the same place...

At the base of the huge, wide canopied tree, Nisha was sitting on a blanket of yellow...wearing a little dress that shimmered and shined. The base of the ancient broadleaf tree was ringed with gifts...little ones and big ones, square ones and oval ones! Purple paper and crimson foil hid succulent gifts, snow white tissue and tiny clicking boxes held delectable treats! One by one, she tore them all open...stacking her favorites carefully to one side.

Ever since Aki had told her the tale of the magical snowy night, the one that was Yet To Come, Nisha had been ready. She wanted to see the tree, bright with lights, and tear open presents of her own! Every night, she dreamed of it, just like this.

Usually, it only lasted for a while. When she'd eaten her fill, the babe would drift off to be among the bubbles, or throw great handfuls of yogurt against the surface of the mirrored pond. Settling down in the feather soft grass, Desperate made his way to her side.

Nisha glanced up with wide, smoky eyes...odd eyes, that belonged more to figment than a girl. She was both, here, in this place. Lashes lowering, the babe leaned forward and scooped the sweets towards her...collecting the toys and trinkets and pretties and shinies into her embrace. Mine, her look seemed to say.

Desperate shrugged, a peculiar motion he couldn't quite perform while awake, and settled down upon the blanket. Okay, he silently agreed. All yours. I'm yours too.

Nisha seemed less than thrilled, put scooped him up in the embrace as well. Suddenly, Desperate was tiny...surrounded by towering toys. He trumpeted in alarm. Had Nisha made him small?! He didn't want to be small!!

A few moments later, he was himself again, and Nisha was looking rather vexed. He could feel her insistance. Small. Small! But the Daemon held firm with surprising ease. As with all things that vexed her, Nisha lost interest...her bottom rising as the winds tugged her from her seat.

Chasing after her, tail waving, Desperate called her down. Why so lonely? Why so alone? He tried to ask, but she didn't answer...shaking her head into the breeze as it spoke in baby whispers.

You can talk here! Talk to me! He trumpeted clarion, ringing across the meadow. Turning on a breeze, skirt lifted like a blossom, Nisha giggled and faded. I know, her eyes said. I don't have to.

~.:.~

Desperate blinked, and found himself staring with sleepy eyes at the yellow pillow. Yawning widely, he pushed back to his feet...staring down at the babe that continued to sleep undisturbed. By now, she was probably herding butterflies, or building a cake....it was hard to say, but easy to guess.

Sighing quietly, round eyes black and shining, Desperate shook his head in a distinctly elephantish gesture. She didn't want to talk to him, it seemed...

He would just have to find someone she would talk to.

Rich Harvest~

Bouncing the babe on her hip gently, ignoring her grumbles, Aki strolled down the warm hall of the Villa. Nisha was too tired to fuss, rubbing at one eye with her tiny fist. She'd been sleeping for nearly twelve hours, so she wasn't as resentful at being awakened. After all, her little tummy had begun to pinch, and something smelled lovely.

The crinkle and swish of the dress Aki had slipped her into was rather pleasing as well. She yawned as she blinked down at the ruffled fall hues. Desperate was tidied up as well, scrubbed and powdered, with a lovely ribbon coiling down his tail, and a bright orange spot painted in the center of his forehead. The dot trailed downwards, a line of specks that grew smaller and smaller as they traveled straight down the top of his trunk.

Picking his feet up high as he trotted, the young Daemon took the lead...tail swaying as his ears flapped with each step. He stayed close, getting a nudge in the behind from Aki when he slowed too much in his grand precession. Nisha giggled as he honked in time, rubbing at her other eye.

Aki gently moved Nisha's hand from her face, trying to keep the round dots, one painted on each of the babe's full and pale cheeks, intact. She wore a dress far simpler than Nisha's, a folded robe of muted hues that seemed almost ceremonial. Aki's hair was pinned back from her face with tiny barrettes, which matched the stone resting in the hollow of her throat.

It was early evening, and more than the cool air greeted them as they stepped out onto the balcony of the Villa. Aki brushed the thin hangings aside and nodded to Elle as the last dish was set. Elle looked lovely as well, wearing fall hues instead of her usual emerald dress. A gilded corset descended into a transparent skirt, slit to the hip on each side. She was striking, with her hair coiled atop her head, and sashes dangling from her wrists, but not as breath taking as the feast that lay before them.

Nisha melted a bit in Aki's arms, little lips parted as her mouth hung open. The balcony was ringed by rippling silks, the bright sky of late afternoon muted. A table with thick polished legs sat laden in the center of the terrace, bearing great heaps of food that sparkled and glistened behind the rising wisps of steam.

Squeezing her eyes shut for a moment, Nisha willed the butterflies to appear. Where was her tree, and all the gifts? Surely, this was greater, but she hadn't ever imagined such a thing! When her eyes opened, the scene remained...the faces around the table smiling up at her. Levi was there, grinning in his sleek brown pinstriped shirt...and Melisande as well, cloaked in goldenrod that matched her curls. It wasn't a dream. For the first time, the world Without was as beautiful as the world Within.

Nisha cooed in delight, and those assembled laughed merrily to hear it.

"If a lavish feast is all it takes to please her, I would be honored to cook one each and every day!" Setting down the last dish, Elle leaned in to give the babe a small kiss on the cheek, avoiding the painted dot. Nisha didn't object, her face brightly lit by an unwavering smile that showed more in her expressive eyes than on her tiny mouth. One hand absently made tiny grabby motions as she stared at the spread before them.

Piles of quivering rubies glistened, filled with light and berries. Steaming drifts of snow white potatoes shone with a glaze of pure butter, so elegant beside the dish of crumbled dressing. More pies than she could count spotted the table, tucked amid salads of verdant green and bottles of sparkling delight. In the center, ringed by plump crimson apples, was a hill of crackling, shining gold. It took Nisha many long moments and a few dreamy sniffs to realize it was a bird, cooked to perfection.

Suddenly, she was lifted from Aki's arms, and settled into her own chair of rich polished wood. From this angle, she could see the trim that ringed the table and coiled down each leg...strands of fall leaves, fat clusters of grapes, and polished acorns that winked like gems. For a reason she couldn't explain, her bright eyes filled with tears, and she kicked happily against the step of her high chair.

Desperate seemed just as pleased, keeping Elle busy as he reached again and again for the garland with his trunk. "You have a place as well, Desperate! Here, beside Nisha." Elle guided him to his platform, topped by a lovely bowl. It was full to the brim with all sorts of delights, baked apples and whole potatoes, entire bunches of fresh garden greens and flaky loaves of buttered bread. Sighing his appreciation, Desperate ambled up to the bowl...and lifted a strand of dusky purple grapes before Elle tugged them gently from his trunk.

"Before we begin, Aki and I would like to say a few things!" Still standing beside the robed elf, Elle slipped one arm through Aki's and gave her a fond smile. "We are blessed to have such a feast before us. This gathering is to celebrate more than the harvest...we are here to celebrate the bounty of one another as well."

From her seat, Melisande nodded...her eyes bright with unshed tears. Delicate gold ribbons spiraled down each of her arms, ending in a bow at the back of each hand. Those hands were clasped against her chest, face ringed with curls as her head bowed gratefully forward.

From the corner of his eye, Levi caught the gesture...folding his hands in the same manner, and lowering his head with a smile. Elle brightened, thrilled at the boys respect and restraint, and settled a hand on Nisha's back before continuing. "We are blessed to have such a family, and such fortune. Thank you all for your love, and may we pass our thanks for the earth for the gifts that we have received!" With that, Elle concluded her speech and moved to sit. Aki restrained her with a gentle hand.

"I wanted to say how proud I am of each of you. Melisande, thank you for your help in decorating." Meli colored at Aki's words, pink rising to each cheek as she nodded silently. "Levi, thank you for being so strong, and waking up so early to help us set up!" Levi waved her away with one hand, grinning merrily. "Nisha? Desperate? This is your first Harvest, and we are all so happy to have you." She bent to give Nisha a kiss atop her head, and for once, the babe did not shy. Desperate simply flapped his ears, shifting from foot to foot.

"Most of all, Elle. Without you, our lives would be so different. You've worked for days to make this possible, and days before that to keep this house together. You have our thanks, dearest, and all of our love."

For a moment, Elle and Aki joined hands...sharing a sweet kiss that Levi couldn't help but ogle at. With that, the two sat...scooting their chairs in gently. Nisha was suddenly aware of gentle music, something delicate and ethereal, drifting from the hangings behind them. Silently, Elle and Aki both leaned away from each other...giving a kiss to the cheek of the person sitting beside them. Meli and Levi accepted the kisses with a smile, and both leaned in to plant a kiss on either side of Nisha's face. The circle complete, Elle offered Aki a long silver knife, and Nisha watched in fascination as the golden skin was parted to reveal pure white meat below.

Moments later, in a flurry of color and scent, her plate was laden...heaped full of crimson and green of berries and salad, ambers and browns of potatoes and bread. Slices of rich pie crowded a second plate, beside the tiny bowls of gravy and soup. Though the others were eating and chatting happily, Melisande's sweet voice distinct from the rest, Nisha could only stare.

It was all so beautiful. She didn't know such beauty existed Without...but here it was, clear and vibrant before her. Glancing to the side, she peered at Desperate with wide eyes...sharing a smile with her Daemon.

Aki leaned to the side, chewing a bit of bread. "Aren't you hungry, love? Would you like me to feed you?" Nisha's little mouth opened, and the first thing in was a bite of the gelled raspberries and cranberries. Wincing a bit at the tart sting, it soon relaxed into sweetness, and Nisha with it. She could hear Desperate crunching beside her, grapes disappearing into his young mouth, stem and all.

The music almost vanished under the clatter of dishes, the laughter and chatter of contented family. Elle seemed to be almost magically ready with a new spoonful of this, or a new slice of that as the plates emptied. Another spoonful disappeared into Nisha's mouth, and the babe sighed in contentment.

It was all so beautiful, and so delicious. Silently, opening her mouth once more, Nisha wished every day could be Harvest!

Sour and Sweet~

Midnight in the Kitchen of Good and Evil

Edging down the hall, flattened silently against the wall as he passed Aki's room, Levi froze as he brushed the crystals dangling from the wall sconce. Squeezing his eyes shut as the stones chimed and clinked, the young pirate winced in what he knew would be swift midnight retribution.

No sound emerged from the open bedroom. Letting the breath escape from him slowly, rubbing one hand across his bare chest in relief, Levi leaned slowly to the side to peer into Aki's chambers.

She hadn't woken, that much was obvious...but the huge bed was empty. Brows pushing together in puzzlement, Levi scanned the room as his eyes adjusted...gaze finally settling on a figure upon the floor. For a moment his heart leapt in worry. Aki was stretched motionless upon the stone floor, pale hair spilling over her arm. A shaft of moonlight surrounded her, pushing in through the open window.

She seemed to be sleeping peacefully though...totally unaware of his late night sojourn, He was free to come and go as he pleased! Spinning on his heel, Levi took one satisfied step forward before a pair of bright eyes fixed him from the door down the hall.

Bottom lip prominent, Nisha watched him solemnly. She steadied herself with both hands on the doorframe...not yet walking, but strong enough to pull upright. Staring unwaveringly at her errant brother, Nisha slowly reached one grabby hand forward.

Levi shook his head. "No! Goh! Bed!" Pointing firmly at the doorway behind her, he tried to shoo her back with one hand. Nisha, however, looked genuinely shocked...lip wibbling as she sucked in a lungful of air.

As her little mouth opened, eyes bright with spiteful tears, Levi realized he didn't truly have a choice. Scooting forward, he swept her up in both arms...settling his sister awkwardly against one hip. Almost instantly, she let out the breath....smiling sweetly as her head sank to rest against his shoulder.

"Hokay, shhhh! Pushy bebeh!" Grumbling half to himself, Levi snuck further along the hall...waddling under the growing girl's weight. Desperate was still asleep below his hammock, snoring gently to himself. A few tense moments later, they made it to the kitchen.

Nisha squeaked as she was plopped unceremoniously down upon a chair, brow furrowing as she watched Levi pace. Raising one little hand again, she reached for her brother with silent determination.

Simply holding up one hand in response, Levi tried to figure out a solution to his altered plans. "Can't goh! Desperate'll 'wake. Hmm." Nisha looked decidedly unapologetic, and continued to reach for him uselessly. "Can't go far, so....have fun 'ere, eh?"

As he grinned, Nisha brightened as well...eyes closing as her cheeks pushed up in a smile. He was happy! He wasn't leaving! Turning herself around on her stomach, Nisha slid off of the chair...crawling awkwardly to sit by Levi's feet. She was a bit big to crawl, and she knew it...but walking looked like too much effort. Making a quiet noise as Levi scooped her up once again, Nisha was suddenly blinded by the brilliant glow of the fridge.

Levi kept the door propped open with a stool from the kitchen island, baby sister sill weighing in his arms. Shuffling her about until he could hold her with one arm, the young pirate stared intently into the ice box. So many things that Aki and Elle never let him have...or at least, didn't let him have his fill of. Now there was no one to stop them!

"'Ungry? Waaaant....cheese?" Nisha made a grumpy noise, burying her face in his shoulder. A few moments later, one pale eye was peeking again at the fridge.

"Noh? Hokay....um.....syrup?" With a gasp, her head rose again. She lovedsyrup! Arching her body, Nisha wiggled out of Levi's arms...sinking to the floor and raising her hands.

"Annit."

"Y'wannit?"

"Yuh." Her eyes were intent on the amberbrown bottle...tiny pink tongue wetting her lips in anticipation. Shrugging, Levi pulled it from the shelf...popping the top and handing it down. He didn't bother to watch as Nisha promptly upended it, a slow drool of syrup descending towards her face.

Instead, Levi scanned the higher shelves...pulling a slender corked bottle from the back. He couldn't read the label...it was either cursive or French, so he yanked the cork and took a sniff instead. Ah, he recognized that smell!

Pausing for a moment, bottle still in hand, Levi turned slowly to face the hall. His excitement dimmed with vague unease, fingers tightening around the glass neck. The doorway was empty of course, as it should be....but for a moment the young pirate had the distinct impression he was being watched.

Normal feeling, he assumed, when one was up to no good. Dismissing it, Levi ambled over to the cupboard and found himself a glass...the biggest mug on the shelf. Filling it with the red wine until it was brimming, he lowered his head to sip some off before he tried to pick it up.

Wooo!

Sniffing as his eyes watered, Levi grinned....rubbing his nose with the back of his hand. It was sharp, and not very sweet...but just a sip was enough to warm him like cocoa. He knew Aki wouldn't be happy to find her bottle empty, but it was her own fault for never keeping rum and ale in the house! After all, pirates lived on rum and ale, didn't they?

Glancing down at his sister, her little silhouette backlit by the light of the fridge, Levi chuckled. Syrup was running off each side of her face, pooling on her shoulders and trickling down her arms. Yanking a napkin from the roll, he offered it to her like a gentleman. "'Ere'."

Nisha took it without looking, and stuck her tongue out under the sweet drizzle once again. "Goolbleb!" She blew a perfect syrup bubble, wobbling for a moment as she tried to cross her eyes and stare at it.

Still laughing, quietly given the hour, Levi shook his head and took another sip. Aki would be so mad about Nisha's mess that she probably wouldn't even notice the missing wine! Shutting the door of the fridge with his heel, without turning around, Levi raised his glass carefully and inclined his head to his sister.

"Toast! Good toast!" He'd drink to that! Nisha only burbled in response, waving her syrup bottle in agreement as she hiccuped. A fine night indeed! Taking a long pull from the sloshing mug, Levi completely missed the gleam of pale eyes from the shadowed vent. The evening had turned out more promising than anyone had planned, it seemed.

Unconventional Methods of Interrogation
In which Declan revisits Nisha tasting like bleh and tries to learn to read from someone who can't talk.

Quote:
Quote:
Nisha fussed in Aki's arms, twisting this way and that as though she wished to be dropped unceremoniously upon the ground. Grimacing as she shifted Nisha into one arm long enough to knock, the harried elf glanced down at Desperate. "Please give me a hand today, sweetie. Help keep her occupied?"

The little Daemon flapped his ears cheerfully as though he understood exactly what she meant, but in reality he simply wished to distract the babe from her irritation. An unhappy Nisha made Desperate distinctly nervous. Without thinking, Aki's hand dropped to the handle as though she wished to let herself in. It had been a long day, and the sun was barely above the trees! Desperate honked helpfully, swaying his weight from foot to foot as he bumbled in place.

Quote:
Both Raife and Declan's heads perked up at the sound of the door, although the boy was confined to the couch as Raife made her way over to answer, winding her way around an old fashioned pinball machine and a giant statue of a hyena that just happened to currently be in her foyer. She hoped it was Aki.

She was pleasantly relieved to find the elf woman with Forgotten and Daemon in tow. She smiled in what she hoped was a pleasant and happy manner, and not a crazed and harried manner that she feared she exuded. "Aki! Nisha! Desperate! Oh, how glad I am you're here!" She crushed Aki in an impromptu hug. If she hadn't seemed, well, a bit odd before, she certainly seemed so now.

Declan, meanwhile, was unphased by any of this. He'd seen these people before. How unoriginal. Didn't Raife have any more friends? He stopped craning his neck around the edge of the couch and went back to his 'reading.'

Quote:
Losing her breath for a moment in the hug, Aki instinctively pulled Nisha to the side to keep the girl safe. Seeing her opportunity, Nisha yanked her foot back, booted Aki in the gut, and found herself whumping to the ground. With a slight bounce, the girl grunted and power crawled in on all fours...undignified, unladylike, and entirely uncaring. Desperate trumpeted in alarm and pushed in after her...accidently bumping against Raife's legs. Aki tightened the hug to keep them both upright.

"Ugh! Uh! Raife! It's...good to see you too! DESPERATE! Ah, sorry..." Gasping out a response as she was hugged, kicked, and jostled, Aki somehow found herself inside. "How is everything going?" She glanced at the odd decor, but it barely registered as 'strange'...Raife was one of her more eccentric friends, and that was saying something.

Quote:
"Fine. Horrible. Fine. Maybe." Raife let go and tilted her head. "Can I get you anything?" She bustled her way back over to the couch, scooping up the crawling Nisha one handedly and propping her up on the comfortable couch, on the opposite armrest as Declan, and absently running a hand over Desperate's head. "Milk? Juice? Water? Soda? Hard Liquor?" She cleared away a stack of pillows and washcloths that'd been freshly folded, to make room on the opposite couch for Aki. "No Levi today? It's probably for the best."

Quote:
"Oooh, honey. Tell me. Water is fine, don't trouble yourself. Have a seat and I can get it!" Aki guided Raife to one of her own chairs, trying to settle her so she could center herself for the story. True to her offer, she bustled to the cupboard with a backwards glance to the babes, smiling at Declan even though he didn't appear to be looking.

"What's wrong?!" Desperate raised his snout at the pet, the tip of his small trunk winding around Raife's hand until Aki pulled her away. Nisha, however, simply sat stunned....finding herself in an entirely new place. On the couch? With...him! It was him! Her eyes narrowed as she spotted Declan, the edges of her loose curls swinging into view as she crawled awkwardly towards him. Nisha smacked whatever it was he was holding to get his attention, face pushing closer to the other babe.

"Noh." One of her only and favorite words.

Quote:
Raife ranged herself in the chair, flopping in a sprawled manner across it. "It's Mik, it's always Mik. He's alone, and probably scared, and so far away, and it's all my fault." She'd let him go. A toddler! How much more of an idiot did she have to be before someone carted her off to some asylum?! She was somewhat expecting someone to come in and strike her down with a lightning bolt out of the blue.

Declan blinked as the book jostled on his lap. Rapunzel in her castle was having some sort of earthquake dilemma, and there was a giant hand over the prince's face...oh. He blinked up at the intruder. Her again. He arched an eyebrow, as if to ask exactly why she was bothering him.

Quote:
Aki opened her mouth to respond, but in truth, couldn't think of anything to say. It might well have BEEN Raife's fault, so there went that response...and Mik was no doubt scared, so her reassurance faded unspoken. Mik always seemed a bit edgy, unless he was with Raife or Levi. "He's...very strong. You know what. Where ever he is, Mik will be okay. If you want, I can call Levi? He walked all the way home from the park the other day, by himself, so I'd trust him enough to turn him loose and look!"

As Declan glanced up, Nisha tried her first technique...a rosebud smile that pushed both of her cheeks up, and squinted both of her eyes in apparent good humor. When that garnered no reaction of praise or affection, she slowly let the smile fade...staring at Declan once more with stoic hostility. What was his problem?!Seeing the smile fade and a slight glower replace it, Desperate danced nervously...making various trinkets rattle. Tail swishing, he leaned forward to poke Declan in the side with the tip of his trunk...hoping for a giggle that would entertain Nisha, however briefly.

Quote:
"Mik is in Europe." Raife snapped, obviously irritated, not really with Aki, but with the situation in general. "He's in Muse Society. And I have no idea where that is, except that it's in Europe. Alexi...couldn't...wouldn't tell me any more than that. Unless Levi can fly planes, I think that's a no."

Declan reached around the trunk and carefully pulled it up to his mouth and gummed the side of it, before promptly spitting it out. That didn't taste RIGHT. His face wrinkled up and his bottom lip trembled with the beginnings of a cry. The more his face scrunched up, the more the cry seemed inevitable. Until...he seemed to concentrate so hard that the mad just faded away, and he was left with just a couple sniffles, his face settling back into the placid, and slightly cynical calm it perpetually held.

Quote:
Nisha held her breath as Declan began to wibble, little mouth partly open in anticipation. Her wide and blank eyes clouded as he regained control, and her little hands balled into fists. Why wasn't he paying attention to her?!Pushing one little flappy hand forward, Nisha reached for Declan's mouth...offering him a free taste, just this once.

Desperate was otherwise occupied tying his nose into knots, trying to sniff the baby slobber on the side of his own trunk. How nice of Declan to give him a kiss! Usually only Elle did that. Aki leaned forward at the mention of Europe...shaking her head in amazement. "What? Why? Who...who's with him?!" She didn't mean to sound accusatory, and knew she should be offering comfort instead of agreement, but the statement took her totally off guard. Ever since Raife had shared the video, she'd held a special place of worry in her heart for Mik.

Quote:
"Alexi. For now. Then, who knows? " Raife spit out the words as if she wasn't referring to the kind Russian giant that she loved dearly. <"Stupid. Thoughtless. Man."> She instinctively switched to Russian, as if she was addressing the man directly. It certainly seemed like she wasn't done being angry and indecisive about her decision to let the boy go.

Declan's mouth and hands instinctively reached for the stimulation, gumming the baby girl's hand with a curious determination. Wait. He knew this hand. This smell and this taste. He spat out the hand again and furrowed his brow at her. Why was she making him review previous stimulation?? How boring. Greedy questing fingers reached for her clock instead.

Quote:
Shaking her head sympathetically, Aki listened...though she didn't understand a word of Russian. "He's fine, he will be fine. Here, have a sip, you'll hear from them soon!" Pushing a glass of water closer to Raife, Aki rested one hand on the woman's arm, squeezing in what she hoped was a reassuring manner. Poor Raife, she knew almost how she felt. When Levi had vanished, off across the waves, Aki had felt as though death itself might be easier to endure.

Nisha brightened for a moment as Declan gummed, glaring again as he pulled back. What? She didn't taste yucky! Aki had wrestled her into the bath just a few days ago!! As his little hand reached for her watch, Nisha yanked back with a shrill warning...leaning forward to bite at his hand. A few teeth had come in over the past month, giving the bite a sting, even if she didn't n** hard. Almost instantly (having realized the bite was coming almost before Nisha did), Desperate trumpeted in alarm and batted her away...pushing the curl of his trunk against her fat cheek. No!

Quote:
Raife absentmindedly took a sip of the water, sighing. "I'm sorry to bring you here when I'm so down. But I needed some company. It was driving me nuts, and I think the kids were picking up on my distemper. Well, except that one." She waved her hand at Declan before pausing and staring at the two kids. "Oh, no, honey, don't do that. See? She doesn't want you to."

Declan seemed undeterred by the potential bite. He continued to reach forward until his fingers could just reach the edge of the cold metal of the watch. He wiggled them, as if tempting fate, and even maybe teasing Nisha a bit. It was hard to tell.

Quote:
Now it was HER turn to fuss. She was already leaning back as far as she could get, but Declan was touching her watch anyway!! Her face screwed up into a picture of unhappiness, a thin wail rising as she clearly protested. Crying, as always, was too much effort...and besides, Aki usually just picked her up when she cried. Certainly didn't want that. Instead, Nisha raised her hand to slap...but settled for plucking the glasses off Declan's face instead. She might not care to walk, but grabbing was something the girl was fairly adept at. "AHN! AH!" Mine now, baby!Desperate cringed and glanced to Aki for help...but Aki was busy consoling the larger of the two. Gentle, came the urge, passed from Daemon to babe silently. Nisha knew that word as well...when it wasn't heeded, something pretty usually broke. Something pretty and hers. Instantly, her hand relaxed, but she held the stolen glasses as far back as she could.

Pushing to her feet, Aki muttered apologies to Raife. Why was it always her children that misbehaved?! Mik and Declan were angels...anytime someone screamed, it was almost always the fault of Nisha or Levi. "I'll go settle them down. When do you expect to hear from Alexi? Can you contact him?"

Quote:
Oh, but Declan wasn't going to stand by and take this quietly. He wasn't his shy big brother. And what good was the watch if he couldn't examine it with his glasses on? He scrambled onto Nisha, grabbing the watch with one hand and reaching for the glasses with the other, smushing her face carelessly with his stomach. He didn't wail like Nisha, but his face was screwed up with unholy concentration, fingers wiggling, outstretched, needy.

"I..I don't know. I barely understood what they're doing over there, and I certainly don't know how long it might take."

Quote:
With a renewed shriek, Nisha yanked to the side...sending them both tumbling off the edge, and luckily into Aki's waiting arms. With a sigh, Aki separated the squirming babes...returning Declan's glasses and tugging his fingers gently from the girl's watch. "Play nice, you two. If you break your pretties, you won't have them anymore!" Nisha knew this, and ignored Aki...climbing rapidly across the couch to invade Dec's space once again.

Desperate gave up on the entire venture, and ambled over to keep Raife company. She was quiet, at least, and usually scritched him on the head of he begged long enough. Planting himself beside her chair, sitting ridiculously upon his haunches, the young pachyderm gazed up with patient black eyes. "Well, keep strong, then. He'll be home soon, and wiser for it. Home is easier to appreciate once you've seen the world."

Quote:
Raife reached down absently and stroked her hand over the elephant's ears as if he was the family dog. He might as well have been. "He'll be okay. Maybe. Hopefully." She frowned. "Not that I like to think about it, but he's certainly survived worse, hasn't he?"

Declan pushed at Nisha's face, directing her away from him. The girl was bigger than him, and stronger, so the gesture was almost useless, but he tried anyway, angling his head away wisely from the girl's fingers, ducking his head, and the prized glasses away from her. In the meantime, his other hand just couldn't resist. He reached for the watch again, no matter how unwisely.

Quote:
There was simply no way. Twisting the watch out of reach, Nisha tried the same technique Levi used on her...pushing one hand against the boy's forehead to keep him at arm's length. She didn't want his glasses anymore, the girl was content wrestling. Even if they were wrestling over her watch. The watch he would never get to play with. Nisha just liked being the focus of his odd attention.

Raising his trunk in a proud curl, displaying the point of his baby bottom lip, Desperate accepted the pets quietly. He loved visiting people, this was all a Daemon could ask for! Taking her seat once more, Aki gazed absently at the elephant as she nodded. "That he has. I'm sorry you're worried, Raife, but he'll be home soon." Not that she could promise, but it simply had to be true.

Quote:
Declan's arms waggled uselessly for a moment, before he just stopped. Stopped resisting, stopped wrestling, stopped reaching for the watch. It was suddenly almost as if Nisha didn't exist. If any large weight on him could just stop existing. He turned to his book, pinned under him, flipped onto his tummy, and went back to reading, leaving Nisha stranded on his back. He must have been affected having a second body weight on him, but if he was, he didn't show it.

Raife reached down, and amusedly examined Desperate's tusks with a smile. "Formidable, someday. I'm glad Nisha has you to protect her." Although it seemed like Raife was relaxing, she'd settled into wistful pouting.

Quote:
Desperate puffed up proudly, letting Raife admire his little tusks to her heart's content. Nisha was indeed lucky! At that thought, the girl looked up for a moment...eyes narrowed at her Daemon before she stared back in confusion at Declan. What happened? It was almost like...he'd forgotten about her! Leaning forward, head hanging into his field of view, Nisha shared at the lad upside down.

"Eh!" Definitely her brother's influence. Aki settled back down at the table, also sparing the happy Daemon a pat. She was surprised his tail wasn't wagging. "So, they told you nothing? Mik just...went?"

Quote:
Suddenly, Nisha was assaulted by a flapping of wings. It seemed that there was suddenly a liason between her and the boy. Reasoning was getting very irritated on this intrusion on her boy. She usually let Declan handle his own business, but this girl was certainly getting far too pushy. The bat was up in the baby's face, batting her wings and furiously chirping.

"No...it's supposed to help...he's having headaches and bad dreams.. Supposedly, it's part of growing up a muse..and usually regulated back at Muse Society....before...you know..they're shipped off or whatever, to their artists. I don't really know much about the nuts and bolts of it. Mik's an exception in any case, since he's been with us, and he's half human, and he'll never..have an artist...but he still has the power, I guess, and it needs to be controlled."

Quote:
Nisha spluttered in disbelief, waving her hand in front of her face. Her other hand, which had been resting on the book, tightened over the page. "EEEEEEEEE!!!! BAH!"Desperate struggled to his feet, but only stared...forgetting Raife's earlier sentiment entirely. He knew he should help, but....it was that THING! That icky tiny flying thing!! Nisha continued to wail, struggling atop the boy as her fingers dug into the book.

Aki sighed at the noise, but didn't bother turning. It was probably exactly what it sounded like. "Mik is lucky to have Alexi with him, then. Things will be fine, but I know you miss him." She reached for Raife's hand, offering what little comfort she could, and tried to think of a way to change the subject and take the woman's mind off of it.

Quote:
Dec continued to ignore the racket above him, leaving Reasoning to handle the intrusion. He flipped a page, carefully, pushing Nisha's fingers off the book. The prince was climbing the princess's hair in the picture. It looked painful, not romantic. Not that Declan would know the difference. Up above, Reasoning was battering Nisha's face like a little tiny hammer with wings, puffed up and screeching to look as frightening as she could.

"Yes...Alexi's...a good man." She squeezed Aki's fingers briefly, then let go. She finally seemed to be calming down. "No matter what I may have said earlier about him. I trust him. "

Quote:
Aki smiled a bit and settled back, glad that Raife was relaxing. Her own worry for the boy fluttered within her, but she pushed it down resolutely. She could do her own worrying later. "As soon as he's back, let us know. Levi's been in a funk for nearly a week, now." Making a bit of a face at hte mention of her son, Aki glanced down at the obviously nervous Desperate. "What? Go help her if you want to!"

Desperate took one step towards the tussle, just as Reasoning let out a particularly vicious squeak, and shivered. Nisha didn't really need his help, did she?The girl answered that by flailing both arms, managing to finally brush the other Daemon away for a moment...just as she lost her balance and topped sideways off the couch. No Aki to catch her, this time.

Stunned, Nisha gasped...trying to catch her breath. What the hell?! Still breathless, she glared up at Declan...trying to change his head into a big fish. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to be working. This was why she hated being awake!

Quote:
Raife's brow furrowed a bit. "A funk? Why?" A smile flirted at the corner of her lips. "Is it woman trouble? He'll be getting to that age soon. You're in for some fun there. Finding girls in his room in all hours of the night. I don't envy you." She paused a bit. It'd been some time since she'd seen them last. She leant forward. "Or are you already? Finding them." She whispered, checking to see if she was out of earshot of the wrestling toddlers.

Declan and Reasoning were pleased, even though nothing showed on the little boy's face. They'd fixed the problem of that pesky little girl. Reasoning settled back into Declan's coat, as he cast a furtive glance down at the girl now with her butt on the floor. Butt on the floor was not butt on Declan, so this was success.

Quote:
Aki pretended to look shocked, the surprise melting off her face in place of a smile. "No, no girls yet...though he hounds Meli every time she leaves her tower." With a sad laugh, Aki also turned to peer at the young ones...surprised Nisha wasn't screaming. "Actually, I swear I heard a girl's voice in his room the other night, but it was empty....even the vent hatch he thinks I don't know about." The tips of her ears dipped as her eyes narrowed, but the smile remained. "No, he's been on about Mik, actually. Well, and Vidya. Apparently he wants to go swimming, since the weather's warming, but he's too grounded to put together plans."

Ignoring the distant babble of adult voices, Nisha stared for only a moment longer...gulping in air as she finally found her strength. A cold irritation had settled over her, and in a rare act of independence, the girl child pulled herself up onto her own two feet. Walking herself awkwardly along the edge of the couch, Nisha struggled back up onto the cushions. That stupid book was still taking up his attention. Fine, then she'd pay attention to it too! Pointing to the tree in the illustration, Nisha barked half a word. "Ee." She couldn't really remember what they were called, but she was determined to read it better than him!

Quote:
"Well, expect it soon...as quick as these ones grow. And even sooner since it's Levi. I'm glad he misses Mik. Well...not so much the missing...but..well, Mik'll probably be wanting to see him as soon as he gets back..whenver that is."

Declan finally looked up with Nisha in interest. Ahh! She could tell him those words again! He only yet knew things by sight...he couldn't say the words. He pointed at an object on the page. This time it was the horse the knight was riding on. He beamed an uncharacteristically friendly smile.

Quote:
Nisha lit up at Dec's unexpected attention, eyes narrowing in slow satisfaction. With a whuff, Desperate settled back down...ambling towards Raife in relief. Squinting at the picture, Nisha nodded in mock understanding.

"Anuu. Aaaah." Stretching out the first of the unhelpful syllables, Nisha slapped her hand down on the horsey. He was such a nice boy when he paid attention to her!!

"No doubt, he's already walking a fine line. Caught him passed out on the kitchen floor the other night...empty bottle of wine in one hand, and his baby sister covered in syrup not ten feet away. Don't ask, cause I don't know."

Quote:
"Syrup....wine....Oh Aki, you got to get a padlock for your fridge. I've had one ever since Cray learned how to walk." She pretended to frown a bit. "Yours are going to get mine in trouble." She didn't mind in the least. Lord knows her boys needed to get out a bit more. She grinned, so Aki knew she was kidding, and looked over at the couch. "Hey! Peace treaty! Excellent."

Declan nodded solemnly, as if he was absorbing these words carefully, extracting information from them. He pointed to another picture this time. Rapunzel herself, with her mouth open wide like a blow-up doll, shockedly calling down for her prince as he climbed.

Quote:
Aki followed Raife motion, stunned she hadn't actually thought of locking her fridge, and smiled softly. "Look at that. Not bad!" Finishing her water, Aki rose long enough to take her glass to the sink. "Anyway, you're probably right...I apologize in advance!"

Nisha stared at the picture, having no idea what to call the vapid little thing. It's mouth was making an 'O' shape, though....O....Oh...

"Hoh." Nisha nodded. That had to be right.

Quote:
"Don't apologize. I should thank you in advance. I think...without Levi, Mik wouldn't be the kid he is today." She tilted her head at the pair of babies. "And apparently Nisha is teaching Dec how to read, so that can't be bad either." She smiled at Aki. "And thank you. For keeping me sane. I don't know what I'd do without you around."

Declan nodded silently, and turned the page. The knight was now rescuing the princess from the castle. Declan pointed to the princess again -most noticable on the page, in bright pink, and tried to make the mouth motion that Nisha did. "Ooooommmmm." .

Quote:
Aki nodded with vague happiness for a moment before doing a bit of a conversational doubletake. "Nisha...can't read!" Turning to stare at the babes, Aki watched her daughter point assuredly to pictures, and babble complete nonsense. "Ah, well, that's cute!"

Grunting impatiently, Nisha corrected him...puffing out her breath as she enunciated. "Hoh! Ahnanan." Desperate wandered a bit curious, interested in the story as well. Apparently the girl was stuck on a tree, and the boy was half horse?

Quote:
Declan furrowed his brow before sticking his fingers straight into Nisha's mouth. There certainly wasn't a better way to figure out how something worked than to dive right in. He'd be making the correct sounds in no time. "Oooooo mmmfgh."

"Slobbery more like." Raife winced as Declan molested Nisha's mouth with his fingers, wriggling them into the O of her mouth. "I'm not used to a child with a such remarked lack of personal space. He does that to every orifice he can get his hands on. God help him as a teenager." She smirked, despite herself.

Quote:
Also despite herself, Aki snerked. Trouble, indeed. "I'm sure it will all turn out for the best. At least he's so inquisitive! Nisha just sleeps the day away, unless she's eating. This is rare."

Pulling back as Declan poked at her face, Nisha scraped her tongue along her few teeth. Ew! That wasn't food! Unlike some babies, she knew the definition of edible. It mainly included candy and peach yogurt. Patting the new page, Nisha swept her hand to the side in an effort to send the book flying from the couch. Desperate, obviously in the line of fire, cringed and hooted in worry.

"
Quote:
She's almost never asleep when she's over. I think the kid pushes her buttons." She turned to look over at them. "Declan." The boy's head lifted slowly, as if he was only interested because he had to be. "No." The boy persisted for a moment, naturally stubborn when he wanted something, but then relaxed, and gave what looked like a shrug, but could have just been a lifting of the shoulders, and settled back on the couch, letting the girl toss the book around as she liked.

"He only listens when he knows it's not worth the trouble."

Quote:
The sound of ripping pages echoed as Aki nodded, her motion stopping as her ears perked reluctantly. Staring for a moment in horror as Nisha happily tore out a handful of pages, Aki was on her feet a heartbeat later. "Declan, I'm so sorry! Oh, Nisha, that's not nice at all! What if he had broken your watch?!" Glaring up at the scolding tone,

Nisha gave her guardian a flat look, as though to say 'My watch is already broken, fishhead.' Grumping as Aki hauled her upwards, Nisha shot one last look to Declan. It had been fun, she decided, and offered the boy a tiny smile. She would be back."I've got to get her into bed, it's the only time she behaves. Thanks for having us, as always, and call me if you learn anything."

Mortified at Nisha's behavior, Aki beat a quick retreat...intending to have QUITE a talk with the young lady in the car.

New Growth~

~...liquid clouds, bobbing and pulling apart...long yellow lotus, with a butterfly shadow...pale girl and bright eyes...watching and oh so amused...all of them danced...and spun...and sang...smoke thick in the air~

Slowly, and with great resentment, Nisha fell awake. The sun was warm above her, and the grass was cool...it was the perfect chance for a nap. Why were there eyes on her, then? Staring and staring?

Picking her head up, eyes narrowed in groggy speculation, the young Forgotten focused on the shape beside her. Only a little smaller than she, all verdant and pale and purple...and a smile? Green hair?

With rising annoyance, Nisha struggled to push herself into sitting. Who was this, then? For a moment, Elle's form was silhouetted in the kitchen window...but Nisha was too focused on the boy before her.

Kudzu. The thought appeared in her mind as though she had willed it. Glare snapping to Desperate as he lounged nearby, Nisha mentally shoved her companion away. She didn't want to know his name!

Too late. Kudzu? What kind of a stupid name was that? Nose scrunched at the babe lying peacefully beside her, Nisha finally raised her hand aggressively. This was her nap, and her grass! He better leave!

The babe didn't so much as blink. Pale, cornflower blue eyes peeked back up at her, partially hidden by a mop of leafy hair. The boychild didn't seem to have a worry in the world, much less concern over the temper of the girl before him!

SMACK! With an irritated swipe, Nisha brought her hand down against the babe's leg. No crying...again, he did little more than wiggle...but her hand stung like hot water! Instantly, she'd sucked in a huge breath of air. The air was split as she let it out in a classic warbling wail. Watching through her tears as Kudzu rolled a bit to the side in concern, Nisha suddenly caught glimpse of the facets near his ankle. The little white bathrobe he wore, even with the baggy brown pants, wasn't enough to hide it. Purple crystals, all along his leg!

Forgetting her sobbing, just for the moment, Nisha sniffed and leaned forward with one grabby hand. They were pretty, therefore, they were hers! And she wanted them! Wet little fingers pushed along the amethyst ridges, eager and seeking. Kudzu cooed softly as though she ticked him on purpose.

They weren't budging. They were...attached! Accepting this fact with instant dismay, Nisha screwed up her face into sadness once again...little hand raising for another vengeful strike. It wasn't until she brought it forcefully downward against the same leg that the baby girl remembered...Kudzu's leg was hard.

A genuine shriek rose from the lawn. Pain, frustration, and humiliation warred for utmost cause as the tiny girl hollered. Her had was burning, and she had no pretties, and she wasn't done with her nap! Despair turned slowly to rage as Nisha realized that Kudzu was still smiling that same damn implacable smile.

Her hand closed over a few locks of his cool hair as she lunged...fingers finding the side of his head as he turned his face reflexively. Yanking back with all her strength, Nisha practically tumbled. His hair wasn't strong like his leg, in fact, it came right out!

Staring for a moment at her handful of leaves....wait, leaves?....Nisha tried to catch her breath. They were sticky and green and crumpled...

Raising her eyes slowly to Kudzu, Nisha watched his face change. Wonder to confusion, confusion to concern, and then the pain washed over him. The tiny boy had never before felt pain...especially not anything so severe as the loss of a handful of hair! Trembling as he gasped for breath, Kudzu finally let go...a high, horrible keening of suffering.

Nisha's smile vanished, even as it appeared. This wasn't as satisfying as she'd thought it would be. This wasn't crying....this was agony, laid bare! The girl watched in horror as thick, milky tears oozed from the babe's wounded scalp, rolling down his plump cheek. Her hand opened to release the 'hair' she'd pulled, but ony a few crinkled leaves drifted to the grass. The rest were stuck, glued to her by that same horrible sap.

Desperate was struggling to pull himself up even as Nisha added her voice to the cry. Her tiny heels drummed as she threw herself back, feeling as bad inside as Kudzu did out. The front door flew open as Elle dashed out, shock and empathic pain written clearly across her stricken face, but it was too late.

The damage was already done.

Smoke and Mirrors

Nisha’s breath fogged the window, her nose pressed piggishly against the glass. Aki was totally unaware of her audience, still out pulling weeds in the cold morning garden. Nisha smiled, and slipped back down off the stool. “Now.”

Desperate fidgeted, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. He wasn’t really even supposed to be in the house, much less doing what Nisha wanted. Aki had been very firm on that point. Giving his head a shake, trunk swinging, the Daemon shrank back to fill the doorway he stood in.

“Now.” Nisha’s eyes were round, and her tone was flat. She jabbed one finger towards the door of Aki’s room, commanding Desperate onward. With a whine, the poor pachyderm squeezed forward into the hall…walking carefully to avoid the little end tables displaying painfully breakable objects. With a careful loop of his trunk, he gave the knob to Aki’s room a turn, and shook his head again. Won’t open!

Nisha’s hands curled into fists. Her nose was still red from where she’d pushed it against the window, making her eyes look especially pale and scary. NOW.

Squeezing his beady eyes shut, Desperate laid his ears back against his head, and lifted his front right foot. For a moment, he wobbled, slightly off balance. Grimacing, Nisha turned her shoulder outward like a tiny football player and tried her best to slam against his side. Her tiny nudge tipped him off balance just enough, and Desperate’s raised foot crashed right into Aki’s door, just as planned.

The sharp sound of wood splintering echoed with a shotgun crack down the hall. Aki’s multiple locks dangled, ripped from their housings, as the door swung unevenly open. Moving quicker than anyone would have given her credit for, Nisha scampered back over to the window and hauled herself back up on the stool, barely peering over the ledge towards the garden.

Her stomach tightened. Oh no! Where was Aki?! Nisha squealed, certain they were busted, and Desperate hooted in echoed worry. Tensed to run, Nisha already had one foot off the stool when she saw Aki’s hat, bobbing through the orchard.

The orchard! That was even further away than the garden! Nisha sighed, filled with sick relief. That meant Aki hadn’t heard the crash! As soon as her knees stopped wiggling, the girl slipped back off the stool, and padded into Aki’s cold room. “C’mon, now.”

Again, Desperate balked. Breaking her door was one thing, but there wasn’t even enough space to turn around in Aki’s room! He was sure that the punishment for breaking things IN her room was going to be worse than breaking INTO it. Looking about frantically for an excuse, nervous under Nisha’s dangerous gaze, Desperate finally spotted the window Nisha had been spying out of.

Nono! Nisha go! Desperate watch Aki!

Nisha paused. That was actually a really good idea. Her glare melted into an angelic smile, one that worried him almost as much, and she stepped forward to wrap her arms around his face. “Gubboy.” She kissed him right between the eyes before slinking off into Aki’s room, leaving Desperate all alone in the hall. He took a deep breath, sighed, and sat back on his massive haunches. Now he just had to pray Aki didn’t look their way! Nothing was more suspicious than a five foot elephant keeping watch.

As soon as she stepped into Aki’s room, all worries of trouble left Nisha’s mind. This was one of her favorite places in the waking world…filled with all sorts of things she was never allowed to touch. Nisha walked slowly by Aki’s rack of scarves, letting her fingers trail through them. She picked two of them, a gold one and a purple one, and tugged them from the bar…draping them delicately over her shoulders.

If only she’d thought of this when Sam had come to visit! They would have had a much better time playing dress up in here. Nisha kicked off her shoes and slipped into a pair of Aki’s low heels, twisting around halfway backwards to admire them. Poor Sam!

Half way across the room, and already mostly dressed up, Nisha paused. Her amber eyes went wide slowly, reflecting Aki’s wooden vanity against the east wall. Now there was the motherload. Delicate necklaces hung over the edges of the large oval mirror, resting against their own reflections. A myriad of tiny boxes, round and square and gemmed and locked, rested upon the vanity surface. Nisha approached slowly, and hauled herself up onto the tall chair.

Her own reflection made her pout. She looked so plain, surrounded by so many beautiful things. Her hair was messy, and her nose was red, and her eyes were too big for her face. Nisha wanted lovely slanty eyes, like Aki had…or dazzling bue eyes, like her brother! Tilting her chin up, trying to look haughty, Nisha glared disdainfully at herself. Unfortunately, the expression looked more sulky than haughty…she could see straight up her own nose!

Sighing, Nisha forgot about the mirror for a moment, and poked at the items arrayed before her. The first things that caught her attention were the candles, beautiful white tapers that had never been lit. Cheeks dimpling with a smile, Nisha picked up the little matchbox (why did Aki have matches if she never lit the candles?) and gave it a shake. There was something in it! Opening it carefully, Nisha fished out a single match. Now this she’d get in REAL trouble for. Striking it carefully along the red, just like Levi had shown her, Nisha gasped as the match jumped to life. She stared at it for a moment until she realized how quickly it was burning, and shook it out with a yelp. The smoldering match dropped to the ground, leaving a lovely burn mark on Aki’s carpet, as Nisha stuck her fingers in her mouth.

Desperate poked his head in the room almost instantly, trilling with worry. Nisha spun to glare at him, fingers still in her mouth, and sent an angry thought. Windows! Now! The daemon complied, after one last worried look, and vanished back around the corner.

Once the pain subsided, Nisha gave her hand a shake, and fished one more match out of the box. This time, she lit the two tapered candles quickly, and dropped the match into Aki’s flower vase before it could burn her. The low light of the candles was just enough for her to see by, and Nisha smiled, despite her smarting fingers. Aki would notice if the light of her room suddenly came on, but this was just a tiny glow! Now that she could take a better look, the Forgotten child leaned forward on the tall chair to poke at the little cases and boxes…opening the first one that caught her eye.

Inside was pale gold powder, the kind Aki wore on her eyelids. Nisha smiled, truly delighted, and stuck her finger in it. Gold trailed from her fingertip like faerie dust, sparkling in the candlelight. With two heavy strokes, Nisha applied it to her own eyes, and took another peek at her reflection.

How lovely! How mysterious! She posed for a moment, fluttering her lashes, before setting that box aside. In the next box was blue powder, and in the next was green, and Nisha tried them all, one by one, until she looked like she was wearing a peacock mask across both eyes. Giggling to herself (which sent another ripple of concern through Desperate) she snapped the last box closed…sending up a puff of iridescent powder.

One of Nisha’s eyes squished closed as she breathed some in. The other eye closed as the tickle started, right behind her nose. One breath, two breaths, three breaths later, and…ACHOO!

The tall chair rocked back with the force of the sneeze, and Nisha grabbed the edge of the vanity in a panic. As soon as the chair stabilized, she sighed…and blinked once she realized how dim it had become. One of the candles had blown out, either by sneeze or sigh, and put up a thick curl of wax scented smoke.

Nisha grimaced, feeling more than a little silly. She messed up her makeup, almost fell over, and now everything smelled like icky smoke. All she wanted was to be pretty, like a butterfly! Not clumsy like an elephant!

Desperate shrilled distant objections at that thought, but Nisha blocked him out. It was true, after all! Taking a breath, she blew the smoke away, watching it twirl and flutter. Somewhere, Desperate was still railing and trying to get her attention, but Nisha refused to listen. Instead, she poked a finger through the curling smoke, and sighed again. Even the smoke was dull and grey!

On second look, it wasn’t just grey…maybe a little purple, and a little blue? Nisha looked closer, grumpy face fading with a tiny smile. Yes! Definitely purple! Purple like her favorite butterflies, the ones with the blue edged wings. Nisha wiggled her fingers through the smoke, and giggled at the way it divided. Just like tiny wings!

Enchanted, Nisha rested her chin on her fist, eyes getting sleepy as she watched the smoky butterflies drift. They almost seemed to dance, swirling and twirling as they faded and reformed. Even Desperate fell quiet, and Nisha distantly wondered if he’d fallen asleep. Maybe-

“Nisha.”

Nisha’s eyes grew wide at the quiet, calm voice of her guardian, and the butterflies vanished in a puff of smoke. Turning slowly, lip already trembling, Nisha stared across the room at her guardian standing in the doorway. She was in SO much trouble!!

Why didn’t you WARN me?! Her look of surprise vanished into a glare at the Daemon that lurked behind Aki.

Desperate flapped his ears, eyes guilty. I DID! He stamped one foot, and everything in the hall rattled. You didn’t LISTEN!

“Nisha.” Aki repeated herself, and Nisha shrank back in the chair. There was no way out of this one. She was still wearing the shoes, scarves still around her neck, and more makeup than a whorehouse. Cringing, she opened one eye to stare up at her guardian, but Aki’s words weren’t the harsh ones she was expecting.

“Did you make those?” Aki crossed the distance between them slowly, and put one hand on the back of the chair.

“Whut?” Nisha answered a bit crossly, suspecting a trick.

“Those.” Aki poked the smoke, which drifted formlessly from the blown out candle. “The butterflies.”

Aki had seen them too? Nisha smiled, slowly, and nodded. With one finger, she beckoned, summoning both her guardian and the smoke closer. Squinting one eye shut, Nisha concentrated, and the smoke curled elegantly into the semblance of a tiny rose. “Sorreh.”

Reaching out to take the rose, Aki gasped half a laugh as it distorted and vanished, smoke dispersing. “That’s…amazing! Nisha, can you do it again?”

Nisha nodded, and concentrated, willing an even bigger flower to appear. For a moment, the last breath of smoke swirled, forming a ghost of a leaf, but disappeared. Trying again, eyes squished nearly shut, Nisha concentrated even harder. Nothing.

Nisha kept trying, again and again, until Aki put a hand on her back. “It’s okay, sweetie! You made beautiful things, but that’s the nature of beautiful things. They’re temporary.” Nisha ignored her, trying to shrug off her hand, and tried yet again. “Come on, let’s wash you up.”

Tears welled up in Nisha’s eyes, rolling in fat strips down her cheeks. It wasn’t temporary! It was real! She’d seen it! The other candle flickered and guttered as Nisha panted, getting righteously worked up. “Go. GO!”

“Nisha. It’s okay. Come on.” Aki pinched the other candle out and scooped her daughter up, despite the fact that she was almost too big to hold, and braced as Nisha went stiff.

“NO! I do it! I DO IT!”

Desperate shrank back as Aki passed, holding the girl against her chest as she shrieked. Nisha would be asleep soon, he knew, fits were almost too much effort for the poor lazy girl, but in the meantime…it made his head hurt.

Aki made her way to Nisha’s bedroom, and Desperate slunk outside…breezing by Aki’s ruined bedroom door as he passed. Unseen, the curl of smoke from the second candle tugged towards the door as well, the edges of it fluttering before it dispersed.
