21 September 2004

It was a very eventful day today. Something of an emotional rollercoaster, really. It began with the last minute cramming being done for my Marketing mock defense. Then things sort of went down hill the moment my groupmates and I stepped into the clas.

I got home in a mood that cannot be described as anything but depressed. In a desperate attempt to keep me from killing myself, I leapt onto the bed where Khun Ying was.

I reached out for my plush and drew her close. She was oh so warm, like she always is. Then I felt something, this little thumping sensation against my cheek. I pulled back and realized, Khun Ying had grown!

And she was. Absolutely. Beautiful.

She seemed to be pleased that I finally noticed her change and nuzzled against my arm. I could only stare at her, seconds (maybe even minutes) passed by before I finally reacted.

I only hope to the unseen forces that Khun Ying did not suffer any hearing loss after I squealed in sheer delight. I stuttered and stammered and I think I spoke gibberish for a few minutes before I gathered my composure. The first sentence that I finally uttered that actually made sense was "Ang ganda mo!"

And thanks to the Tagalog lessons I had given her, she beamed at me in a mixture of (what I think is) embarrassment and happiness. I simply can't wait to show her to everyone in the shop!

Huni brushed her bangs out of her eyes, her new hair was something she had to get used to. Much like Khun Ying being an animal now. But unlike the former, the red head had no problem with the latter. She was nibbling on a cookie as she wrote in her journal, the panda sleeping soundly beside her. Tara was snuggled up with the velveteen, slumbering just as deeply.

The cookie Huni was munching on was special, that was because Khun Ying helped in making it.

24 September 2004

Today has been absolutely fun! I was feeling all giddy with my new hairdo and Khun Ying seemed to like it as well. So I decided to bake some cookies in the newly rebuilt kitchen! Of course Khun Ying looked at me an eentsy bit wary, but she followed after me easily enough.

Pun was making coffee when he saw me getting out the baking stuff. Well unlike Khun Ying, he was a little more vocal in expressing his hesitation. So he offered to help me and Khun Ying make the cookies. That tressym is a mighty fine baker, if I do say so myself.

So there we were, the three of us making cookies! Oh Khun Ying was so adorable, she tried to climb onto the counter and when I saw she was having a tad bit of difficulty I helped her up. She's pretty good at baking, well she's better than me that's for sure. She was so helpful, nudging the eggs to Pun when he asked for them and she even tried to help sift the flour.

Well she ended up getting more of the white stuff on her rather than in the bowl, but she didn't mind. In fact, the flour looked nice on her, like well placed stage make up, really. Pun did most of the oven thing, not trusting me with the appliance... after what happened the last time, I don't blame him.

Khun Ying followed Pun around but didn't get in his way in the least. It's obvious she doesn't take after me in the kitchen. Such a darling my Khun Ying is.

The first batch was a complete success! I say was because it's all gone... the scent was just too good so everyone flocked to the kitchen to have a taste. Even Tylan came around to have a quick bite before going off to meditate.

So we made a second, even a third batch. The one I'm eating right now is part what little remained of the third. I might go and buy more recipe books for Khun Ying to leaf through. I'll try to teach her to read number and words, so in the meantime I'll read them out to her.

I haven't been able to stop by the shop yet, but I'm sure Khun Ying will love it there.

Fondly, Huni glanced at the sleeping panda and closed the journal as she settled into bed to sleep.

I believe it has been an eternity since I have last written here, Khun Ying, school, and other things have been keeping me busy. I stopped by the shop a few days ago, but no one was there. So it might take a while before Khun Ying gets to re-acquaint herself with everyone.

In any case, I stopped by the bookstore today and bought a new cook book for Khun Ying to sift through while I finished my marketing paper. Haven't had much time or luck in teaching her how to read so I'll probably buy one of those alphabet books as well. Or I could look for some old ones in the bodega, I hope there are still some that haven't been devoured by termites...

What else have I been doing with Khun Ying? Oh the usual, philosophy class required us to do a reflection paper so I read it to Khun Ying. She has the most soulful eyes I have ever seen, it's like she was drinking in my words. She agreed on some points, like the point that "every life is important" but she disagreed with my statement that "life is unfair, I should get used to it."

Sometimes, I'm glad she's not this bitter little panda, because things would get really old, really fast. But other times, I don't know as darling as she is, and as helpful as she tries to be, her attempts at cheering me up sometimes just... annoy me.

Like I want to tell her to stop 'smiling' (if pandas can really smile) all the time, act like a normal panda for a change. Yeah, my mood was really foul at that time when I thought this up. She must have sensed the bitterness, because she kinda stayed away.

When she came back, Pun was with her, holding a plate of cookies. I swear, I love her to bits! I'll write more when I calm down, still dizzy from all the projects being crammed.

It was a sight no one was comfortable in seeing, it was a moment no one
wanted to happen, it was a disaster waiting to happen. What was it? Simply put it was Huni, in the kitchen. Pun had been tending to the garden, Nyeta was just as bad as the red head when it was a culinary matter, and Tylan was meditating.

Straw, Tara and Ora were busy making themselves pretty with whatever
trinkets and knick knacks they found lying about the house. Hoai and Hao were in the attic doing who-knows-what as Huni had long warned them never to go near each other. And Vael was... in his room and could little else as he was still a hat.

So this pretty much left Huni and Khun Ying to their own devices. Which
brings us back to the current scene. "Bye Bye Birdie" was playing on the stereo, the title almost a premonition as to what might happen soon after.

Several ingredients were strewn all over the counter top and kitchen
floor, along with pads of paper and pencils. Books lay open in heaps, and they were a mixture of cook books and alphabet books.

"Alright sweetie, this is an egg." Huni explained, holding the white oval out to the panda. She pointed at the word, then at the object, hoping Khun Ying could make a connection between the two. "See? E and two G's spell egg."

The panda nodded and smiled sweetly, padding over to a bowl and nudging it forward to her 'mother.' With a grin, Huni cracked the eggs open and proceeded to the next phase. "Once you learn to read, we can move onto more difficult recipes! Like Mabo Tofu..." the human grinned, feigning a drool.

Khun Ying giggled and pointed to the next line of instruction. "That word is whisk." Huni explained, cross referencing the alphabet with the tool. It took nearly the entire afternoon for Huni to get through the recipe. And because of Khun Ying's help, Huni managed not to destroy the kitchen. Unfortunately, disaster did strike, as Huni had mistaken salt for sugar and ruined the brownies.

"Alright, next time we will fix the labels on these things." Huni retched, dumping the cookies into the trash.

Hoo boy, I need to catch up on my entries. Quick bullet points because that's all I can afford to write given how I'm cramming for my finals. My cold makes it worse...

*finally visited the shop, introduced LP to Khun Ying
*I'm happy that LP has a plush of her own! I can't wait for her to grow up so she and Khun Ying can play. Tenez' dragon plush is welcome to play as well.
*Been teaching Khun Ying the alphabet again, by having her help me label all the stuff in the kitchen. I think she's on a labelling spree by pointing to the bathroom and closets. Maybe some other time.

In other news, I have to move to a small village somewhere. I'll be bringing Khun Ying and Strawberry with me. Nyeta and Pun will be left in charge here. Why am I moving? I have been summoned for some reason or another... I hope it's nothing serious.

Oh merciful beings up above, grant me the strength to finish this entry before I collapse from sheer exhaustion. First things first, remember how I said I was moving to another village? Well apparently I was summoned to care for another child...

As much as I love to love, I hope I don't end up burning out. So I got Nyeta to come along and help me. That tressym needs to find her maternal instincts sometime, so why not help her out? Huni snuck at quick glance from her journal to see if the tressym was around In any case, taking care of three children is hard work.

While Khun Ying tries her best to help care for Strawberry and Jare, I know she wants to have some attention all to herself at times. Oh well, at least she's been practicing her singing, she sings Strawberry and Jare a lullaby to help them sleep. And then she snuggles up with me and well, I stroke her fur and hum her a soft tune so she gets to sleep.

While unpacking the clothes, Nyeta found an apron, one that I had washed and shrunk by accident. Oddly enough, it fit Khun Ying perfectly! She's adorable in it, and she seems to like it too.

I've been planning to put up a play for the Velvet owners, but that's still in the works...

Khun was fretting over what to do. She watched Jare crawl (or attempt to crawl) toward the table where Strawberry's bowl was. She knew the male infant had gotten a taste of the Scoop before and now intended to gobble her up. Truthfully she didn't want her little sister eaten, then again she didn't want her little brother to wail and bawl. She had tried to lure Jare away, tried to distract him with other stuff.

Thankfully, her newest brother, Marl, arrived to stop Jare. She liked the Medusa, especially the pretty color of orange that he was. And she liked how he spoke, very melodic and soft. Once she knew Marl was handling her little brother, she padded to some boxes and pulled out a pink bunny plush that was given to Strawberry a few weeks back.

Apparently, her mom had forgotten to open the little bag the plush came in and just stuffed it in the boxes. Only recently did they discover it and Strawberry loved it. Khun Ying smiled at the plush, recalling vaguely the sensation of sticky ice cream on her fur, which she attributed to Strawberry hugging her while Khun Ying was still a plush herself.

The panda brought the bunny to the Scoop to calm her down, Jare seemed to have frightened her. She watched her little sister gnaw at the bunny, giggling when the pink child gurgled.

She heard Malady's voice but decided not to think of it, instead concentrating on keeping Strawberry amused. However, she did hear the door open and close and eagerly waited for her mother's arrival.

Huni, Marl, and Malady exchanged words, but Khun Ying wasn't too concerned about it as Huni picked her up and cuddled with her. She liked it when her mom cuddled her, and she snuggled against Huni in response. Ever since Marl arrived, her mom looked a lot more rested.

Everything was fine, and Khun Ying was happy.

29 October 2004

Yesterday was Huni and Khun Ying's day out! Oh we went from place to place, from the little village to the city, to the main streets of Gaia. We even came across this quaint little store where my little panda met two beautifully masked children.

Well, she couldn't quite understand them, really, but their guardians were really nice. The purple-themed one even hugged Khun Ying, and I bet my sweetie just loved it. She even began to hum to them to show her happiness.

We also went to visit the place where I met Marl, but I didn't think it was wise to go in without him. Not that the people there are mean or anything, I just... felt wary in a den of snakes if you know what I mean.

I don't know where I am, or where I'm going. It's dark... and I don't like the dark, especially when I'm alone. I tried calling out to mommy, but she's not answering, I tried calling out to big brother Pun and Marl, but they don't answer me either.

Is anyone out there? I don't mind if you think you're ugly, I won't think you are, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Mommy told me that, I can't remember when, it's all hazy.

Hello? Please, someone, anyone, Malady? Is that you? I'm not scared, I'm just not comfortable here, like this.

And Khun Ying began to run, her little paws pounding against cold black earth. The smell of wet leaves wafted into her nostrils, the darkness blinding her sight. And then... she was falling.

Faster, and faster she plummetted, the wind whipping at her face and fur. She didn't know how long she was falling, or how far she would have to go. But she could taste cooking oil, and hear the hissing of the wok. She began to whimper, until a pair of hands caught her. With her nose she nuzzled her saviour, catching the faint scent of strawberry ice cream.

Mommy?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Sweetie? Khun Ying? Are you alright?" Huni asked in concern as she balanced a still sobbing Strawberry in her bowl. The red head stroked the panda's fur with her clean hand (as the other was covered in ice cream), gently cooing to soothe the panda. Apparently, the green panda was having a nightmare, and Huni noticed the soft but urgent cries while she was tending to the Scoop.
Khun Ying rubbed the cobwebs of sleep from her eyes, as she blearily looked to her guardian. She whimpered again and cuddled against the red head, finding security in her warmth. Tonight, just for tonight, Khun Ying only wanted to be with Huni and just Huni.
Strawberry grew up a few days ago, and she's a lot more active now. Mommy tells me I'm in charge of watching over her and keeping her out of trouble because we're both big girls. We play hide and seek a lot, she likes playing that game. It's easy to find her though, she leaves little puddles of ice cream. But I pretend that it's not easy to find her.
I can't bring her to the kitchen and ask her to bake with me. Mommy says the heat from the oven will melt her. And that's not good. I don't want anything bad happening to my little sister. So to keep her safe, and out of trouble, I look at picture books with her. Although we get the pages all sticky and messy since Strawberry drips onto the book. I hope mommy doesn't mind.
Mommy hasn't been herself lately, no one else seems to notice it, but I can. She doesn't look as happy as she used to and her hugs are tighter than normal, I remember her hugging me tighter but I'm not so sure. Whenever I try to nudge her into talking to me, she would only smiled and pat my head.
She used to talk to me lots and lots before, why doesn't she do that anymore?
Why indeed? Huni wasn't feeling like her old self, she doesn't know why and can't really put a finger on it. Maybe she was just homesick? She missed her old house along with everyone who lived in it. She missed how Pun and Nyeta would always argue about who's turn it was to do the dishes. She missed watching Tara and Ora play with the costume jewelry they snatched from her dressing table.
But was it just that? She was feeling depressed again... and philosophy had nothing to do with it, this time. The red head rubbed her temples and closed her eyes, when she felt a wet nose nudging her.
Huni smiled as she looked to find Khun Ying staring up at her in concern. Somehow she knew the panda would be the first (if not only) one to notice. "Hey there sweetie, how's Straw and Jare? Are they asleep?"
Khun Ying nodded and tried to stand onto her hind legs, as if asking to be picked up. Chuckling, the red head bent down and scooped the panda into her arms. The living velveteen nuzzled her nose against Huni's in affection as the guardian kissed her in return.
"Something bothering you, dear?" Huni asked, though the question seemed to be rhetorical and directed to herself. Khun Ying nodded and she listened and snuggled against her mommy.
It was official, Huni Pi is depressed. The denizens of the house reacted differently to the red head's disposition.
Vael would cautiously peek out of his hat from time to time, as if playing 'peek-a-boo' with his guardian would help cheer her up. Jare was too young to be worrying about his adopted mother. Strawberry was a little unsure of how to act around her mom, and frankly didn't like not having any attention.
Malady was being its usual obnoxious self. Marl was trying his best to help cheer the red head up. As for Khun Ying... she was singing. It was a soft little ditty, something the panda made up as she went along. And it made her happy to see Huni smile.
Smile, the red head did, but it was brief and traces of bitterness lingered in her eyes. She looked tired, and would longingly glance at the bed from time to time. But a huge stack of papers and other stuff kept her busy and distracted.
The panda padded over to her mother and tried to climb up. She wanted to help her mom, and while she may not know what it was that Huni was doing, she'd try to learn it.
"Not now, sweetie." Huni said a bit curtly. She was in a foul mood it seemed, and while the red head didn't mean to be so irate, it... hurt Khun Ying. The little panda moved to the bed and climbed onto it. She sniffled softly before closing her eyes, she didn't mean to bother her mother. She only wanted to help...
Khun Ying was worried when she woke up to find her mother wasn't beside her. She was used to waking up to the deep breathing of Huni, and when she looked closer at the bed she saw that Huni hadn't slept in it at all.
Scared more than alarmed, the velvet carefully jumped down and began to sniff around the house, hoping to catch her scent. But try as she might, all the trails led to dead ends.
Now, she was scared, until she saw the Medusa that is. He was cooing at Jare, his tail playing around with the magus. Strawberry was jumping up and down on him and pulling at his hair.
Malady seemed to be fighting with Vael, though only if you considered a glowing match to be a fight. Everyone seemed to be accounted for except the red head.
Marl noticed her at last and smiled, "Madame Huni was called away very late last night. She left me in charge." he explained gently.
"She should have let me take care of allya." Malady muttered.
Khun Ying gave a sigh of relief, though it was not a complete one. She wondered who called her away and why. Surely she could have helped her mother, but then Marl added,
"And she also left some instructions for everyone. Strawberry is to be a big girl and help clean the house. Vael is to entertain Jare and vice versa. Malady is to lessen its troublesome nature. And to my darling Khun Ying, you are to be Marl's helper and keep everyone's spirits up with your cookies and brownies. I'll be back as soon as I can, so save me a batch 'k?"
Khun Ying felt a small burst of pride in her chest, and vowed to make sure everyone was alright.
A knock sounded, and Marl slithered over to answer the door. It was Pun, the male tressym, and he carried in his arms Tara, and on his shoulder was Ora.
"Huni texted Nyeta and told us you might need help." he explained. "And so that the rest aren't bored, Marl can take Khun to the shop while I take watch."
"Are you sure you can handle it?" Marl asked, referring more to Malady than the situation.
"I think so." He nodded.
Khun Ying was sniffing around the bookcase, looking for one of the cookbooks her mother bought for her. Normally the books were left scattered on the floor, but Pun went on his usual cleaning spree and tidied up the house. Unfortunately, the tressym had placed the book on the top shelf, forgetting that they were meant for Khun Ying.
Marl noticed the little panda's search around the bookcase and put two and two together. He picked her up gently and raised her to where the cookbooks were.
The velvet pointed to a thick, yellow book, which the medusa pulled out from the bookcase. "Hmmm? You wish to bake something for Madame Huni's return? But it may spoil before you get the chance to give it to her..."
Khun Ying shook her head, as if to say it didn't matter. She tugged at the book and tried to climb down on her own. To which Marl allowed her free reign.
Just then, Jare began to cry, he seemed to be hungry and it was Marl's task to feed him. Before Malady does something to the child that is...
"Alright, ask Sir Pun if he wishes to help you." Marl suggested and slithered off to tend to Jare.
The tressym overheard his name being mentioned, and looked at the Aeya and Fenthry in his charge. "Do you wish to bake something?" he asked them.
Tara shrugged and Ora seemed against the idea. Still, Pun oversaw the things the little panda did. He was amazed at how well she was following the instructions, even more at her little additions. It turned out that she was making muffins, apparently she remembered Acia's attempt and wanted to try it herself.
