Moderation is one of those weird words. People say it, but they don't mean it. I like to say I drink caffeine in moderation, when in reality every time I get within twenty feet of a caffeine source, I drink it dry. I have the capacity to drink two pots of coffee an hour, if I allow myself any at all.

I know what you mean...I say I drink energy drinks in moderation...but then buy the extra large Monster drink...so...not really.

wow you guys talk of war being bad and yet all youve done is fight??
the is no fighting in this guild. We are merely debating are opinions and philosophies in a sophisticated matter. Fighting is what happens in the ED and GD when the flame wars start.

I think too many people are afraid to HAVE an opinion, discuss it, defend it and/or change their opinion when necessary. If I realize that I'm wrong, I will admit it up front. I have never claimed to be an expert on anything, and have stated many times that I know nothing.
Most people are afaid to have an opinion because then they will actually have to support it. Being indifferent is easier for most people so they can just flow with the current. As for people like you and me, we like to make waves. fight against the flow.

I'd also like to comment about the new growth rate this guild has started...with now just about 75 members 700+ posts this guild is growing bigger than I ever imagined. and new posts are a lot more frequent...thanks for the support and the ideals...free frappachinos for everyone!

w00t. *chugs espresso* I needed that. *grabs the free frappuchino* Ah, caffeine truly is a wonderful thing.

Fighting against the flow is what makes my life worthwhile. Without the usefulness of being able to mentally rebel, I'd probably have taken the ultimate powder three years ago when I wanted to. Turns out all I needed was some mental stimulation, and I feel more alive that I have in years. The only thing that gives me this feeling is walking/riding through the woods.

People who agree with things, who are mentally passive, drive me nuts. I'm naturally a passive person, and about stupid arguments (chores, stuff like that) I'll more likely than not avoid an argument wherever possible. However...when it comes to intellectual discussion...I'm all in on that. Toss in every chip and if I lose the bet, oh well, I got more brains where those came from.

Hmmm, sounds somewhat like me, minus the powder part mentioned before.. And I must admit that I've always felt that failure is as good a teacher - if not a better one - than success.

Not that success isn't nice as well at times, hehe..

I have this thing about me. I have this sincere belief that I'd have been better suited in say, 1500s era Europe, or preferably Japan. Anywhere where you can walk six miles in any given direction and find nothing but trees would suit me just fine. Did I mention I'm a fervent Inu-Yasha fan, and used to dream about being in it as a younger child?

Success is sehxy...and yes, failure is a good teacher. If success was a better teacher, I wouldn't be homeless, planning to uproot two years' effort to make a life in an old home. I expect a few sleepless nights in all-nighter restaurants in the near future...which reminds me...*finishes coffee, refills cup* Coffee is heavenly...

*grins* I do believe you just did.

However, aren't there any natural parks or reservations wherever you are? I know we have to make due for the time being, but it beats nothing at all. I'm quite lucky to have a number of 'woods' in the neighbourhood, as well as a rather large natural park within travel distance. (10 mins with car. A bit more with the bike. Pity I'm not allowed to drive yet.)

Hmm.. dunno. A guy can be successful as heck, but if he strikes me as a jerk, he's not sexy. I suppose it is.. admirable, that he is successful then, but I don't generally call jerks sexy. I find far more entertaining words to fit the bill. *grins*

Well, there's a park about a quarter mile from where I'm at now, but when I get back to Michigan...all over the place. When I get home, I'll be fine.

Yeah, this I understand. That's why I like being unsuccessful so far...this way, I have no success to go to my head.

I drink any source of caffeine I can get, and most all-night restaurants charge 99 cents for a cup of coffee, so I'll take it. I'd probably have a beer or two, maybe a shot of every now and then, but they won't let me here...when I'm on my own again...I'll have to see.

I think a lot of people in the main Gaia forums have a hard time distinguishing a flame from an opinion. For instance... I will take offense if you call ME stupid... but if you call my ideas stupid and can back it up with why, then i'll actually take note and listen. As my evil stepdad would always say - "I'm not calling YOU stupid, just what you SAID or what you're DOING is stupid." ha ha...

I enjoy a heated debate as long as everyone is throwing facts and opinions about the subject or elaborating on other's opinions... but when it gets down to slinging mud it's no longer a debate and strickly a war.

Too many people are content to sit back and coast through life without thinking about why things are done the way they are or where ideas come from. Maybe it's just a question of "Is there a better way?" which I ALWAYS think there is. And often times I'm right.

It's especially annoying in the main threads when someone starts a topic to discuss something, and then proceeds to freak out anytime someone disagrees with their opinion. Sometimes you just gotta listen to someone's opinion and leave it at that. It's only an opinion! Even more annoying when they keep dragging the conversation away from the main topic to ramble on in idle chatter abou their lives (real or virtual).

Within the guild and on Gaia, I'm never trying to attack anyone or piss anyone off. I'm just stating my opinion or my "interpretation" of things - obviously they will not be liked by everyone. I gladly welcome any debate but it burns me when I waste my breathe on a bunch of 3l33t n00bz.

I almost smiled at that. Which, in my current state, is equivalent to falling out of my chair laughing as little as three days ago.

I'd have to agree. Most people are closed-minded and don't want to listen to an opinion when given, and even if they do, well, they aren't happy about it.

Hell, I had someone call me a n00b about ten minutes ago.

However, if someone calls you a n00b, then that too is an opinion. An opinion, I've no doubt, they were quite glad to give. Being unable to back it up with objective factual evidence makes it a sadly unsubstantiated opinion based mostly on emotions but an opinion none the less.

And I do believe I'm over-using the word 'opinion' here..

Four times in three sentences...yeah, overuse is a possibility.

My argument wasn't that someone can't think I'm a n00b. My argument is that, at 18 years of age, I've been actively participating in forum conduct for five years. I've only been on Gaia a month, but still have a better command of English than 90% of Gaia users. I also have more posts than the person who called me a n00b.

I've made my niche here.

Hmm, I think a number of people might not agree with you there. Making one's niche tends to take a little more time than a month on a forum of this size.

Of course *ponders and admits* it might just be that it takes longer for other people to acknowledge that you've made your niche here..

No comment on your English, as it is quite palatable. Especially compared to what some specimen on these boards produce..

That, and having previous experience with forums isn't a bad thing either.

I LOVE being called "kid" by the kids upon this board. It's also funny getting called a n00b - especially by someone who can't spell or write. That's a true elite, and not the kind with the 3's either.

And sometimes I just can't resist trying to debate the mundane. Especially for the poor n00bs that post "wanna be my friend" threads in ED. Most of the responders will flame them for posting in the wrong forum, but it's so much more fun to debate whatever their post is.

Would any of you consider it flaming if you pick on a certain THING that someone declares fanaticism for? For instance, if people started talking trash about Nietsche or flaming Nietsche, full well knowing that it's my favorite philosopher? I don't think it is flaming... but it can verge on trolling depending on how it's worded. One forum I mentioned my dislike for an anime character, someone flipped out... and so I continued to explain why I disliked the character & it magically got me on the "blacklist" of the forum for harassment. I thought it was pretty funny, especially after I read how the person has given up being a fanatic of that character because I "ruined it." Made me think that I must've made some really convincing arguements, huh?! ha ha...

And attacks upon me being a philosopher are also great... makes me feel like I'll be important someday. rofl

it's all in your words...the other day someone told me socrates was mental...I sent him a PM and asked for an explaination giving a breif knowledge of the history of Socrates...he then apoligized to me and that was it...people in general have no idea what they are talking about...educate them and they can be civil...or just find some place better to talk.

I love testing people when they say things like that. It's an easy way of getting them to realize how silly they are being.

I've had some people just not get it though. It might be that they think it's funny to get me started on a topic... Take for example, one of my friends--every once in awhile he will start on how women should be submissive, and that they should stay at home and cook the bacon, etc...

Then I try to give him a lecture, and he just butts in with stupid one-liners, not supporting his way of thinking at all.

But of course, we're laughing throughout the whole thing--debating between us is just a good joke anymore, because we hold such oppisite views on things. Most of the time, neither of us can change the other's mind. It's quite funny to watch, actually xd
