I personally like the series. Not sure what more I could say besides that.

sweatdrop Yeah. There's an idea.

I'm not sure if I could specifically name why it appeals to me. One reason is all the magic, of course. Besides that... I don't know. I'll have to go and think about that.

I am definitely not in the 'target audience' of teens or preteens, but I still enjoyed the books. Yes, they are not the most complex characters or plots, but they still make for a good read. Not everything has to be complex or thought provoking to be entertaining, just look at American Idol. It has got to be one of the worst shows on tv, yet millions of people watch it.

I think some people say they dislike the Harry Potter books only because they think they will appear simplistic if they say otherwise. Personally, I read to be entertained, not to show how smart I am.

Even though I like the books, I have to agree that they do not deserve nearly as much attention as they have received. If you found the first book boring, you probably won't enjoy the rest. As for me, I am impatiently waiting for the seventh book.

Millions of people also watch Carlos Mencia and eat McDonalds food. Lets face it, neither of those are healthy, and each is a sorry excuse for their respective platforms. Numbers mean nothing.

There have always been people who carry around books to look smart, and avoid others to maintain that persona. Myself, I fail to see why "entertaining" and "intelligent" need be separated.

I, too, am waiting for the final book, but probably not for the same reason as you are. I wish to be done with this thrice damned series, and see if Ms. Rowling can make a good end, especially after killing off my two favorite characters.

I have a question... What is everyone going to be obsessing about after Harry Potter is over? Eragon?

And yes <.< I'm still alive and here. I needed "chill time."

Yeah, in terms of story, I think the first one is the worst of the series. Well, actually, in terms of everything. It took me sooooo long to get through the first book it was unbelievable. The second book was slightly better, I thought the third book dragged, and then the series just seemed to pick up so much pace at the fourth book.

I think it would be a shame to stop after the first book, because you would definitely be missing out on a great series. And don't you want to know the rest of the story too?

If you've got the time, I'd say go ahead and read them. They're relatively easy reads, and if you like magic then it's kinda fun. If you're looking for more challenging reading material, you probably shouldn't waste your time. Obviously it's going to be a matter of opinion. Best of luck, whatever you decided to do =P

I'd say try to read on and if you don't like it, just stop.

I personally loved the books because I couldn't stop reading when I started.

As for characters being 2D. As someone had already said: they're archetypes. As in almost every fantasy book. It's one of the most typical features of fantasy - archetypes, heroes, journey, good vs evil etc. You can't always change the genre's rules. And it's not that easy as some could think.

I say every book that makes youngsters read instead of playing computer games, or watching TV or a DVD deserves all that publicity it gets. Because it does something good.

I enjoyed the books and the world she created in the books, but the first book and the first movie are my favorites of the ones I've seen and read so far in that series.

do not read the last one. she rushed everything and i never finished reading it because it was crap.

She didn't rush it, she streatched it out to fill up a year. It was pretty boring in the middle. I think I just read them because I've been reading them since elementary school. Simple books are good to read sometimes because they are relaxing. If I read a good book that is complicated, I will spend most of my time pondering its different meanings when I should be doing something else.

I like the Harry Potter series. Part of it is probably because it is one of the series that got me really into fantasy books in the first place and they are a nice read although I will agree that the characters are simple and the plot isn't the best and much of it is boring (I skiped the majority of the 5/6th books when I read them again).
If you want to continue with the series, its all up to you. I would recommend that you do, but if you find the first book boring, you might find the rest of them boring, but I think it is a good story.
