Wow that sounds so similar to something I went through! Except for the darkness bit @.@ I hope you do figure out what it is. I never would have guessed some sort of past life thing

It sounds like the reason it attacks is because it is afraid of your bondage with it to break. It doesn't want to leave you.

Whatever the darkness is... Does your kinship with it run so deep that you could say you love it?
If the answer is no, then I can't help you.
If the answer is yes: Next time you see it, let your energy (whichever type you use) flow outwardly, leaving an opening to your "heart." It should do the rest on it's own. :::EDIT::: Also, make sure your emotions flow out on the energy. :::End Edit:::
Only thing is that once you do this you and it will, for the most part, be one. If you choose the path of unity, it's a hard one to break free of. Once it's done it'll take years to undo.
