I never once considered Hope a child. She was a demon. Gabrielle wasnt even really pregnant with her. All she was was an oven used by Dahak for a couple of hours to bring the mother of his destroyers into the world. Gabrielle was completely stupid not to see that and I wouldnt have taken her side on the Hope/Solan/Xena issue even if I was Gabrielle centric. Her stupidity cost an innocent boy his life. Being naive and believing the best in people is one thing, being stupid is another.

Hmm...It's not whether YOU would see Hope as a child or not. Gabrielle saw her as an innocent child; HER innocent child and that's all that matters (therefore she's not stupid stare ). If Gabrielle thought beforehand that her child was evil of any sort then she might of done something. She only saw her beautiful child, which was her mistake. Sadly it did lead to Solan's death but you can't blame it all on Gabrielle. I would place all the blame on Gabrielle IF and only IF she knew Hope was evil. But no, she wouldn't accept it because it was HER child. Anyone with maternal instincts knows this and would sympathize with her. She wasn't being naive, she was being a mother..I mean, come on, If i was told my daughter was evil and I had to kill her; would I? No freak'in way!!! I would make sure she was safe. (And even if Hope is a demon, it still doesn't change the fact that it still was Gabrielle's daughter).
Also, there was so many other things that lead to Solan's death. (Britannia, Xena trying to kill Hope in front of Gabrielle, Callisto..ect.) I think of it as dominos..One thing after another as if it was bound to happen (Like Xenas and Gabrielle's crucifixion)
Anyways, I guess I disliked Gabrielle in her 'way of peace' phase..but i suppose it was a phase she just had to go through. After all, how cool was Gabrielle after season 4?!

I have a child so I would say I have maternal instincts yet I dont sympathize. Hope wasnt a child, she was the daughter of Dahak. If Satan came to me and raped me as Dahak did her, I wouldnt have any misgivings about getting rid of his spawn. Gabrielle's blind devotion to something she carried inside her for hours cost Solan his life.
Gabrielle was awesome after season 4! She completely redeemed herself in my eyes in IOM and rocked seasons 5 & 6.

While I'm not sure what I would do in Gabrielle's situation, I can see where she was coming from. Just take a moment to think about it... Gabrielle saw Xena fight her demons away, and act as a force of good. Hope was a child, a baby, from her own womb. I think Gabrielle is of the thinking that humans are innately good, especially at the moments of their births. Throughout the show that concept was repeatedly frequently, especially when Eli came around. Children are innocent by nature. Gabrielle thought if she were able to stave off Dahak's evil influences, Hope would be like Xena: someone who was good despite having a dark heritage.
I think Gabrielle's true mistake was lying to Xena about killing Hope. Not only did she lie, but she made Xena feel guilty for acting on her instincts, which ended up being spot on.The whole situation made me angry... they were two best friends, and yet they couldn't manage to have a rational discussion over the matter...

If I am going to be completely honest I DID feel bad for Gabrielle at first. I still thought she was being stupid but I did understand. In The Bitter Suite she blamed Xena for everything and that is when I no longer felt bad. I have seen people blame Xena for everything including Gabrielle getting pregnant in the first place because Xena was concentrating on her hatred for Caeser and not babysitting Gabs. Gabrielle was an adult I just dont get why she needed constant attention.

Gabrielle did blame herself but after 'The gabby drag' she was so hateful towards Xena, no wonder she would replace anger with blame. I would too if my best friend tried to kill me. If Gabrielle didn't feel that anger she would of been killed. (Because she wouldn't of fought back)
Xena was greiving for her child, just as Gabrielle was. They were two people in pain and it seemed that all they had left was hate for one another. Thankfully it was somewhat resolved in the Bitter Suite, and it made them closer. Without 'The Rift', Xena and Gabrielle wouldn't have been that close in the following seasons.
