My first true practice hurt. Stupid band director and his tracking. gonk
PostPosted: Fri Jul 15, 2005 6:06 pm

My first day of marching band went okay. I had heard that the new band director was really mean, so I had that going against me. Since I am a French horn player, I had to learn new fingerings for the mellophone. Then the notes were really high for me back then and so I couldn't play them very well. Oh, and we had to have all three songs memorized by the end of the week. Then we went outside to learn the basics, which was fine. We ended with the 3-minute drill. That is where you have to stand at attention for 3 minutes and not move. If you move, the 3 minutes start all over again!

My first parade, however, was a lot worse. I felt like crap when first left. I was scared. We got lost. It was 98 with a lot of humidity. 2 hour parade uphills. That was not fun. But they did treat us to boiling hot bottled water at the end! They were sitting out in the sun for a long time...

But I still love marching band. The best thing ever.

My first ever day of marching band was terrible.

I was in eighth grade, and I only knew one person in the band, and most of the band were juniors and seniors in high school. I was so nervous around them all. Plus, our senior drum major that year was also the flute section leader in concert band, and she had heard about me, and knew that I was better than her at flute, so she didn't really talk to me. But she was an amazing drum major. We got a perfect score for drum major at finals that year.

My first marching band competition was even worse than my first day. The foot joint of my flute fell off during a particularly fast part of the show, and we were moving fast, so it was hard to pick it up.

first day of band camp for me was fun..we usually have an orientation at the beginning for about 3 hours. there we register and pay our regular 325 or 425 for the guard. get our name tags so people know who we are. purchase marching gloves. register to get your band uniform. purchase marching shoes. and someother stuff that i cant remember. then for the next however long until band camp starts we just mingle and talk to people. i was kinda just a lil loner until i saw my friends. then i went to go hang out with them. then after that band camp starts. the first 3 n a half hours were standing up and warming up then playing the music that were going to play for the season or what we have. the next hour is dinner where we go off to eat(obviously) then the last 3 n a half hours were on the field learning techniques and perfecting our weight shifts, prep steps, and all that other stuff..so thats how our band camp is like..8 hours of that stuff..its fun tho

Same exact thing here. I think we go to the same school, and obviously, you're a woodwind like me...if we do go to the same school.
To find out about my first day, read the fourth entry in my journal, and go all the way to the first for the next three days.
I forgot to register for uniform fittings gonk but I'm frosh...so I'm not the only one.

now I can't WAIT for band camp. 1 month and counting......

My first day wasn't that bad, because I had about 4 other freshmen in my section that I went to middle school with. Plus, I was taking music lessons with a then-sophomore, so he knew my name and was decent to me. No one in my section really had that "omfg ew freshman are stupid and suck" attitude.
First we played music, and it sucked for me because I had been on vacation and just gotten the music that day whereas everyone else got it a week or so ago, and all the older kids seemed like they knew it perfectly, and here I was struggling with my third part. sweatdrop
Then we went out and did basics, which wasn't that bad, since our middle school had sort of marched so I had somewhat of an idea what was going on.
After basics we had sectionals, and one of our trumpet instructors sort of scared me because he said we had to learn taps and revelie, and we would have to play it once in the morning and at night at band camp. he also told us that if we didn't have the star spangled banner and fight song memorized by camp we would have to run at camp until he told us to stop. but that's probably the worst of my first day experience.

some advice for you: don't freak out about being a freshman, it's nothing personal, everyone has to go through a bit of teasing and such at that point in their highschool career. also, NEVER WEAR FLIP FLOPS TO MARCHING BAND. that's a serious offense in my band, haha. and don't worry about the scales, they're really easy to memorize, and once you've got them down, you don't even need to think about it to play them.

my first day of band camp my freshman year was positively terrifying. i didn't come from the giant public school that was close to my new high school. (the kids from there make up about half of the HS) i came from a little private school, so i had my friends who were freshman too, and about two juniors who had come from my school as well. after i was forced to branch out (only one of my friends was in my section), i learned to adjust and now, as an upper-classman, i love band! i don't know what i'd do if i weren't a part of the marching band.

My first day of marching band was years ago. But I guess I can still remember it. I didn't know anybody, because I was in 8th grade and they were all in high school. But they all knew me, because I guess everybody had been talking about "the amazing middle school flute player" who was going to be in marching band. But yeah. I was also sort of disapointed when I walked into the high school band room and saw that our marching band was small.
But since then our marching band has about tripled in size.

{Today was the first day of band for this marching season. It was weird. Usually we are straight into a half hour of basic and then into an hour and a half of drill, but this year, we actually got to know the freshmen and stuff. It was crazy, we got almost nothing accomplished.

Well, we had all our music memorize by the end of June.

I actually had to miss the first day becuase... I can't remember why. But my first day going there was pretty wierd.

I got there and I looked around and thought, "Dang, am I the tallest one here!?" It was stupid! So now I'm the tallest girl in the band. Actually I'm the third tallest in our whole marching band. It's way sad. We only have about 30 people total in our marching band (including drumline and color guard)!
