#28 Sandslash Interesting Fact: The name Sandslash is a portmanteau of the words sand and slash. Its name in Japanese means "Sandstorm". Its name in the beta versions of the games was Sandstorm. Pokedex Entry: Sandslash is a moderately large, bipedal porcupine or pangolin-like creature with hard yellow skin, lengthy claws, and a back loaded with an assemblage of large brown spikes. These spikes are hardened sections of Sandslash’s hide that grow to form a natural self-defense. Each spike remains on Sandslash for one year, after which it falls off and a new spike grows in its place. Many people have noted that Sandslash bears a resemblance to Sonic the Hedgehog. Sandslash is a resilient creature that lives in desert areas, particularly areas close to dry forests. It is commonly seen either climbing up trees or digging into the dusty ground, both activities which it is suited for thanks to its claws. However, though its claws are strong, they are not indestructible; they occasionally snap when Sandslash digs at an incredibly fast pace. The claws will have started to grow back by the next day, though. The most notable behavior that Sandslash performs to cope with its environment is its method of curling up its body to become in essence a ball covered with large spikes, much like the hedgehog, armadillo, or pangolin . Sandslash rolls up so that the spikes shade its inner body from the sun and therefore prevent heatstroke that can result from the scorching heat that accompanies daytime in the desert. Sandslash is a fully-armed predator when dealing with other Pokémon in the desert areas that form its natural environment. When attacked, Sandslash rolls up into its spherical guise and its spikes arrange to form its defense, after which the Pokémon will either roll away to escape or roll towards the opponent to attack. When trying to flee in this manner, Sandslash exerts specific force on the ground to kick up small-but-blinding dust clouds in its wake, hoping to discourage other Pokémon from following it. When attacking in this manner, though, Sandslash proves itself adept at making the opponent flinch with the spikes of its rolling body just before uncoiling itself and hacking with its claws. It prefers attacking from higher elevations when targeting prey. Owned By: No one yet

#29 Nidoran ♀ Interesting Fact: The name Nidoran♀ follows the same conventions as those of the other Pokémon in the Nidoran family. "Nido" is the Japanese word for 'two times' or 'two degrees', which is indicative of the differences in the genders of the species. "Nido" is also the Nipponicized pronunciation of "needle", which Nidoran are covered in. Pokedex Entry: Nidoran♀ looks like a small, blue rabbit. It has buck teeth, spines sticking out of its back, and large ears, although Nidoran♂ have larger ones. Although small, their sharp barbs render them dangerous. The female has smaller horns than the male. They are mild-mannered, but secrete venom from their small horns when they feel threatened. Although not very combative, it will torment its foes with its spikes if threatened in any way. Before the concept of Pokémon genders was introduced in Gold and Silver, Nidoran♀, Nidoran♂, and their evolutions were the only Pokémon that could be identified by gender. The Nidoran are the only Pokémon prior to the release of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl to have gender-specific evolutions; for the purposes of the games, however, the two genders have always been treated as distinct species with separate Pokédex entries for both themselves and their evolved forms. #30 Nidorina Interesting Fact: The name Nidorina comes from Nidorino with the feminine -a ending to signify that it is female. "Nido", in all cases, is likely derived from the Japanese word meaning 'two times' or two degrees' because of the differences in genders and evolutions of the species, it is also likely derived from the pronunciation of "needle", since the Pokémon are all covered in many needle-like barbs or spines. Pokedex Entry: Nidorina's horn develops slowly. If it becomes enraged, it prefers physical attacks such as clawing and biting and raises the barbs that are all over its body. It emits ultrasonic cries that have the power to confuse foes. When resting deep in its burrow, its thorns always retract. This is proof that it is relaxed. More proof of its docile and gentle nature is that whenever Nidorina are with their friends or family, they keep their barbs tucked away to prevent hurting each other. They become nervous if separated from their flock. When feeding its young, it first chews and tenderizes the food then spits it out for its offspring. Owned By: No one yet

#31 Nidoqueen Interesting Fact: The name, Nidoqueen, originates from nido and queen. "Nido", in all cases, is likely derived from the Japanese word meaning 'two times' or 'two degrees', because of the differences in the genders of the species, it is also likely derived from the pronunciation of "needle", since the Pokémon are all covered in many needle-like barbs or spines. Pokedex Entry: Nidoqueen's super-hard, needle-like scales provide strong protection. It uses its hefty bulk to execute powerful moves. It is adept at sending foes flying with harsh tackles. Nidoqueen uses its scaly, rugged body to seal the entrance of its nest and protect its young from predators. Nidoqueen's ponderous body is surprisingly agile, and its Tail Whip (or Iron Tail) attack can seem to come from nowhere. Owned By: No one yet

#32 Nidoran ♂ Interesting Facts: Nidoran♂ (ニドラン♂, Nidoran♂?) is one of 493 fictional species of Pokémon in the Pokémon franchise. Prior to the introduction of genders in the Pokémon video games, this Pokémon, its evolutions, and the Nidoran♀ evolutionary family were the only Pokémon whose genders were made explicit. Male Nidoran have larger horns than the females. The name Nidoran♂ follows the same conventions as those of the other Pokémon in the Nidoran family. "Nido" is the Japanese word for 'two times' or 'two degrees', which is indicative of the differences in the genders of the species. "Nido" is also the Nipponicized pronunciation of "needle", which Nidoran♂ are covered in. "Ran" may derive from pacarana, a South American type of rodent. It evoles into a Nidorino then into a Nidoking. Poke'dex Entry: Nidoran♂ has a well-developed sense of hearing due to its large ears. Nidoran♂ can raise its ears to check surroundings, after which it would move them in many directions to detect danger. Before the concept of Pokémon gender was introduced in Gold and Silver, Nidoran♀, Nidoran♂, and their evolutions were the only Pokémon that were identified by gender. The Nidoran are the only Pokémon prior to the release of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl to have gender-specific evolutions; for the purposes of the games, however, the two genders have always been treated as distinct species with separate Pokédex entries for both themselves and their evolved forms. #33 Nidorino Interesting Fact: The name Nidorino presumably comes from the prefix "Nido" which the whole family is named for, and "rino" which is a suffix for male. The "rino" may also be a misspelling of "rhino", because this Pokémon's trait is a rhino-like horn and is Latin for nose. "Nido", in all cases, is likely derived from the Japanese word meaning "two times" or "two degrees" because of the differences in genders and evolutions of the species. It is also likely derived from the pronunciation of "needle", since the Pokémon are all covered in many needle-like barbs or spines. Poke'dex Entry: Nidorino looks a bit like a purple rhinoceros and more like a rabbit with needles and horns all over. It is a fearsome Pokémon with vicious attacks. Nidorino is an aggressive Pokémon that is always quick to attack when it notices an attacker: its large ears are always on the lookout. The horn on its head secretes a powerful venom and on impact with an enemy, poison leaks out. This horn is harder than diamond and can easily punch through it simply by swinging. If it senses a hostile presence, all the barbs on its back bristle up at once and it challenges the foe with all its might. Nidorino is the male counterpart of Nidorina Owned by: No one yet

#45 Nidoking Interesting Facts: The name Nidoking is likely derived from the pronunciation of needle, since the Pokémon are all covered in many needle-like barbs or spines, and king. Poke'dex Entry: Nidoking is a large, powerful (like a large purple tank) creature armed for battle. Its horn, hard enough to pierce a diamond, contains secreted venom, making it a deadly stabbing tool upon prey and Pokémon battle opponents, and its thick tail packs enormously destructive power capable of toppling a metal transmission tower. It uses its tail to smash down its target, then constrict it to break its bones. Nidoking's steel-like hide adds to its powerful tackle, so once it goes on a rampage, there is no stopping this powerful Pokémon. Nidoking is the masculine equivalent to Nidoqueen, and as such is more aggressive, stronger, and has a tougher array of spikes. That, along with its drastically different coloring, is therefore eligible for separate classification from Nidoqueen in the Pokedex. Owned by: No one yet

#35 Clefairy Interesting Facts: The purpose of Clefairy in the games, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both "wild" Pokémon, which are untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and "tamed" Pokémon that are owned by Pokémon trainers. Clefairy's name is a combination of clef, French for (musical) key, and fairy.[2] Its Japanese name may be a shortening and repetition of the word pixie. In the English beta version of Pokémon Red and Blue, Clefairy's name was Aria, another term for a melody. The name Clefairy refers to both the overall species, and to individual Clefairy within the games, anime and manga series. Poke'dex Entry: Clefairy is a small, bipedal creature. It has no neck, seeming to be somewhat stout compared to other Pokémon of its size, such as Pikachu. It has short pink fur, with a large brown patch on each of its two pointed ears. Between these ears is a large swirl of pink fur. It has two small eyes, no nose, and a small mouth with a tiny protruding fang. It also has a patch of darker pink fur under each eye.[3] Clefairy are often admired for their cuteness and playfulness. It's considered by many to be "adorable", making it a popular pet. Clefairy are difficult to spot, due to the fact that they can only be found in certain areas, infrequently. However, they seem to be much more common on the night of a full moon.[4] Clefairy can be seen playing in groups, on the night of a full moon, retreating to their group slumber when dawn arrives. This Pokémon is noted to be able to store moonlight in the wings on its back, giving it the power to float in mid-air.[4] Clefairy seems to be based on a fairy, as it is a magical, somewhat humanoid,[3] winged creature, lending credit to its name. There have been sightings of Clefairy, with its evolutionary forms Cleffa and Clefable, using spaceships, and the Moon Stones used to evolve Clefairy are also rumored to come from extraplanetary locations.[5] Clefairy have a lot in common with Jigglypuff, as they are both pink, fairy-like Pokémon who are known for their singing abilities. Also, they both have baby forms who were released at the same time, they both have similar pink curls on their foreheads, and both evolve with a Moon Stone. Owned by: No one yet

#36 Clefable Interesting Facts: Clefable's name is a portmanteau of the words clef and fable. Its name in the beta versions of the games was Ariala. Clefable's Japanese name, Pixy, refers to the mythical pixie. The name Clefable refers to the species as a whole, as well as to individual specimens in the games, anime, manga, trading cards, and other media. It evoles from a Clefairy and a Cleffa. Poke'dex Entry: Clefable’s appearance is rather similar to Clefairy’s. It is larger than its pre-evolved form, with prominent ears and a pair of jagged wings on its back. Its feet have two claws each. Clefable inhabit remote mountainous areas and generally any environment that has sufficiently little ambient noise. Clefable’s hearing is extremely sensitive - it is said that it can discern the sound of a pin falling 1,100 yards away, so it is averse to living in areas with sound pollution (compare with Whismur). Clefable are also extremely timid, and rarely seen in the wild. They avoid all contact with outsiders. Even sensing the presence of others in the area (which is fairly easy thanks to their prodigious hearing) will cause it to run and hide immediately. They will, however, come into the open on quiet, moonlit nights to take a stroll on a lake. Clefable’s wings are probably not fit for real flight, but they allow it to move in a skipping, bouncy manner as if it was walking on the moon’s surface. They can even walk across the water’s surface this way, so when it takes the aforementioned stroll on the lake, it literally takes a stroll on the lake. Clefable’s wings, its hovering walk, its timidity and elusiveness have led them to be categorized as a type of fairy in the Pokémon world Owned by: No one yet

#37 Vulpix Interesting Facts: Vulpix are fox-like creatures with six curled tails, based on the Japanese fox spirit kitsune. Most commonly female, Vulpix are especially known for being beautiful. As Vulpix undergo Pokémon evolution, their red fur turns pale yellow and they grow three extra tails. Vulpix are a prominent species, since Brock owns one throughout much first series of the Pokémon anime. It's Japanese name, Rokon is a portmanteau of six (六, roku?) and kon (from kon kon, an onomatopoeic word describing the bark of a fox). The name Vulpix is a blend of the words vulpes or vulpine and six. Also, Vulpix's element most likely may have been derived from Vulcan, who was the god of fire, volcanoes and blacksmiths, in Roman mythology. In the English beta versions of the game, Vulpix was known as Foxfire. Poke'dex Entry: When it is born, Vulpix has just one white tail but as Vulpix get older, this tail splits from its tip. Both its fur and tails are beautiful; as it grows larger, its coat grows even thicker and more luxurious. Inside Vulpix's body burns a flame that never goes out. During the daytime, when the temperature rises, this Pokémon releases flames from its mouth to prevent its body from getting too hot. If attacked by an enemy stronger than itself, it feigns injury to fool the enemy so to escape unharmed. It can freely control fire. Just before evolution, its six tails grow hot as if they are on fire. Vulpix is impervious to fire moves, as they also heal Vulpix when struck. This is identified in the context of the games by Vulpix's ability, Flash Fire. The artwork design of Vulpix was created by Ken Sugimori in 1996. Vulpix evolves into Ninetails after it has lived for one hundred years, so to evolve a Vulpix in the game, a Fire Stone must be used. However, as is common for Pokémon that evolve by use of a stone, doing this will prevent Vulpix from learning any new attacks on its own in Red, Blue, and Yellow. Instead, the player must make sure it has learned all the attacks they want it to know before evolving it. Owned by: Brayden, Sondra, Nemuri

#38 Ninetales Interesting Facts: Ninetales is inspired by a Japanese fox spirit, the kitsune. As a kitsune grows older, it gains more tails; the kyūbi-no-kitsune is a fox demon with nine tails, the most a kitsune can get (except for Inari, who is sometimes depicted as a ten-tailed kitsune). So, too, is Ninetales the most experienced fox Pokémon. Much like a kitsune, Ninetales is very clever and sinister. Also like the kitsune, when Vulpix evolves into a Ninetales, Vulpix's red fur turns pale yellow. If the Vulpix is shiny (gold), it will turn silver. The name Ninetales is a reference to Ninetales' nine tails. The name is also a reference to a Chinese myth of a nine-tailed fox spirit who serves under Nuwa, and the Japanese. Ninetales' Japanese name, Kyukon, is probably a portmanteau of the Japanese word for nine (九, kyū?) and kon, which comes from kon kon, an onomatopoeia describing the bark of a fox. In the beta, it was known as Nine Tales. Poke'dex Entry: Ninetales is very intelligent, but vengeful; Ninetales have been recorded going to extreme lengths to enact complicated revenge on those that offend or harm them, like putting a 1,000 year curse on anyone who pulls on its tails. They (as well as Vulpix) have good senses of smell, hearing, and sight. A Ninetales is believed to have 9 hidden abilities, which would be one for each of its nine tails that it has. They are Pokémon who have an extremely good sense of justice, along with being quite strong and long-living; however, their logic which is quite good becomes twisted quite easily. Ninetales is the second longest-lived of all Pokémon (Rayquaza being the longest living and possibly rock types). Its signature attacks derive from two flame sacs located in the neck, which project from two ports on the back of the mouth. Although its flame is not as hot as other species (such as the Flareon), it can project flame for a longer period of time than most species (with the notable exception of the Charizard). If these flame sacs are punctured, the Pokémon suffers a fate similar to liver failure if not quickly treated. Ninetales, as a species, have a weak point when it comes to the young; in the Pokémon universe, tales of Ninetales helping children (and their parents, if present) out of blazing buildings or through harsh winter climates are common. They also perform the same courtesy for baby Pokémon. However, they do not raise Pokémon of other species, nor humans, any more often than a normal animal. According to legend, nine noble saints were united and reincarnated into this Pokémon. Some legends claim that each of its nine tails has its own unique type of special power. They are attributed with many mystical powers: laying curses, mind control, the ability to control fire, invisibility, and more. However, these reports are only mentioned sporadically, if at all. #39 Jigglypuff Interesting Facts: Jigglypuff are well known for their ability to sing a mysterious melody – containing, as is customary in all Pokémon vocalization, only the word "Jigglypuff" – that instantly puts opponents and passers-by to sleep. The name Jigglypuff is a combination of the words jiggly, referring to its motion, and puff, referring to its buoyancy. Its Japanese name, Purin, probably derives from the Japanese word for pudding. Poke'dex Entry: Jigglypuff is a Normal-type Balloon Pokémon. Its body is globular, pink, fluffy, cuddly, and accented with stubby appendages, a tiny tuft of a single curl of hair, and enormous blue eyes. Jigglypuff's most popular attack is to sing its opponent to sleep. Jigglypuff also has the strange ability to puff its body full of air to make it look larger than it actually is. Jigglypuff evolves from Igglybuff through happiness, and to Wigglytuff with the use of a Moon Stone. Jigglypuff can easily adjust the wavelength of its voice, without pausing to take a breath. However, if the listener is deaf or never sleeps, the Jigglypuff suffocates, and might even die.

#40 Wigglytuff Interesting Facts: The name, Wigglytuff is a portmanteau of wiggly and tuff, which could be a deliberate misspelling of tough or tuft. It evoles from a Jigglypuff and a Igglybuff Poke'dex Entry: Wigglytuff is a relatively large pink balloon-like creature with a white underbelly, large blue saucer-like eyes, a pair of large pink ears like a rabbit, and a twisty tuft of pink hair on its forehead. In fact, it's remarkably similar to its pre-evolved form, Jigglypuff, except the ears have grown longer and it now maintains an "oval" shape. Wigglytuff's eyes are always covered by a thin layer of tears, so that if any dust gets into Wigglytuff’s eyes, it is quickly washed away. Wigglytuff’s body is soft and full of elasticity, like rubber, allowing the Pokémon to breathe in air heavily to inflate itself to large sizes. This it does particularly when it is angered or threatened, and it inflates itself steadily and seemingly without end to both intimidate the offender and prepare itself to battle it. Since it is adept at attacking with a Body Slam, the opponent would do well not to be complacent. However, once inflated, Wigglytuff can easily find itself bouncing like a balloon, limiting its ability to battle. It also inflates to a monstrously large size to scare away attackers. Wigglytuff has a layer of supple fur on its body fine enough that it cannot be seen unless very up close. The fur has become a popular aspect of Wigglytuff on its own; it has been described as exquisitely pleasant and the ultimate in luxuriousness. People who have felt Wigglytuff’s fur have had a hard time stopping feeling it because it feels so heavenly. In fact, some people attest that sleeping next to a Wigglytuff is simply divine. Even the Pokémon find the fur irresistible; If two Wigglytuff are to snuggle together, they will not want to be separated. Owned by: No one yet

#41 Zubat Interesting Facts: The name Zubat is probably derived from the Japanese word zubatto, the onomatopoeia for a target being successfully hit, and bat. It can also be accepted as a reference toward the tokusatsu hero Kaiketsu Zubat. A Zubat is supposedly 2' 7" tall. Poke'dex Entry: It resembles a small blue and purple bat, with no eyes and two probe-like appendages for legs. Owing to its name and appearance, it acts much like a bat. It lives in caves and other dark places, and navigates using ultrasonic waves. It appears that Zubat is weakened by sunlight, so it hides in caves or other dark places. At night, it will come out and hunt for fruit or Venomoth, or it sucks blood. The female's fangs are smaller than the male's. Owned by: No one yet

#42 Golbat Interesting Facts: The name Golbat may derive from the words goal and bat. It can also be accepted as a reference to the villain Golden Bat of the tokusatsu Jinzo Ningen Kikaider series, or the actual species Golden Bat (Mimon bennettii). Golbat appear to be large, blue bats whose heads constitute their full bodies, have two tiny legs, two small eyes and huge, gaping black mouths with fangs. Poke'dex Entry: Golbat is a fierce nocturnal Pokémon, residing in the darkness of caves, and is most active in the pitch black of night, especially if the moon is in its new phase. It is widely known and despised for its feeding behavior: Sucking fresh blood from living things in large quantities. Once it has found a living target, it attacks in a stealthy manner, often striking without warning from behind, to harshly bite down on its prey with its four sharp fangs strong enough to puncture the hide of any animal-like Pokémon, however strong the hide might be. It then proceeds to drink ten ounces of blood instantly. Golbat enjoys blood so much that it does not want to stop, even though a lot of blood will weigh it down enough so that, if it is able to even fly afterwards, it flies clumsily. Surprisingly, after each attack and feeding sequence, Golbat’s own blood type changes into that of its victim. Once it strikes, it will not stop draining energy from the victim even if it gets too heavy to fly.[3] The female's fangs are smaller than the male's. Owned by: No one yet
