Lady Nekochan Shiloh1991 Lady Nekochan We don't have elk where I live, but we do have whitetailed deer. Why do deer love to hang around horse pastures? They do the same here, both at the barn I visit and one near my house. They were grazing in the pasture of the barn near my home once, when a person started walking down to the horses. As I drove by, I could see all those little tails pop up as they scattered. Really cute.
Our barn's owner said that one of her horses used to mimic deer when they were in his pen. Without them, he ran like any other horse. When the deer were around, he did that bounding hop like they do. xd Ha-ha that's cute! I think the smell of hay might attract them. Sometimes my little Shetland, Pepper (who thinks he's a dinosaur) will try and start fights with the elk. That's when I have to scare them away. They would crush Pepper. Otherwise I love their presence, they are so beautiful. Well, I guess Pepper still had plenty of herding in him. xd I think maybe the deer like the expanses of open field, and the fact that a bunch of fellow grazing animals live there. It makes them feel more secure that it's a safe area, I guess. 3nodding That too...
In the winter we used to get a bunch in our yard. We have lots of lichen growing on the surrounding trees, maybe they like that. Or maybe my neighbors are feeding them stare

I saw a flock of cardinals this weekend.
No, cardinals are nothing unusual here. But...seeing about ten of them all together? Priceless. ^-^ I didn't know they hung out in large groups like that. I've only seen about three or four together at the most beforehand.

random_shiichan well, i dont have a pic, but when me and my dad were hiking in a forest area, we saw many bucks, one was just 3 feet away!!!!!!!!! O_____O That's awesome.
I don't understand how people have the heart to shoot deer. They're completely innocent animals, for the most part. Heck, even undergoing too much stress can kill them.

I just said I don't know how poeple do it, especially those who do it for sport. I simply cannot get excited about killing an animal. However, I will say that hunting with a gun (NOT a bow!) is more humane than traditional butchering.

[Although I will say that I would perfer that someone be 'sporting' about their hunting practice than not.] Bows...meh. A well placed shot with a carbon arrow will drop an animal quicker than a poorly placed gun shot. The efficiency and percieved cruelty of any hunting tool is firmly down to the person using it.

Bows, however, have a higher potential to leave the animal injured and in pain for longer periods of time.
Unrelated - A new sighting! ^-^ I saw a flock of snow geese on the way to work Tuesday morning.

This is NOT the flock I saw! xd Even if I had a camera, it was probably dangerous enough for me to be gaping and craning my neck to see them while driving.
Apparently, they live around our area when mirgrating in the winter. I've never seen them before.

Yet I wouldn't want to see an animal shot by someone who didn't know their firearms either[instant and quick kills by firearm are pretty much restricted to localized head, neck and chest shots, same with bows. A gut or hind quarter shot animal with either weapon will experience a prolonged death.] Nice sighting. 3nodding And a pretty pic, too.

xd They are confusing birds. I thought they for certain were whooping cranes until I realized I was half the country away from their migration pattern.
