I haven't been into a Hot Topic in years, not since all my friends quit.

I don't notice trends, I guess, because I don't go to highschool or college anymore and I kinda live in my own world. A lot of my fandoms from long ago were despoiled and ransacked years ago by popularity (anime & jrock - at least the stuff I REALLY LIKE - seem pretty safe so far), but at the same time, it paved the way for some positive things: bands I like playing more often/in the states at all, clubs run by my friends staying open, cheap stripey tights and black nailpolish, etc. Hot Topic was just a symptom of this, not the cause, though, fun as it is to blame them. smile Adult Swim and various video game marketing companies probably has more to do with the buttrape of anime in this country than Hot Topic. Dir En Grey DID play a tour with Korn... it was only a matter of time.

Really though, if you think about it, a lot of these bands (not all!) are omnipresent in Japan and other parts of Asia - POPULAR or even TRENDY, if you will, whereas American and European stuff I totally take for granted is all like WHOA there. *shrug*

I wish sometimes we had less "Hot Topics" in Generic Mall X and more mom and pop stores devoted to goth/loli/fetish/hippie/obscure music/fandoms clustered in cobbled alleyways like Harajuku in Tokyo and Camden Market in London here in the states. That's the only reason I don't like Hot Topic - because it's a rather ugly mall chain with very little character or class, and it sticks out like a sore thumb, making me not want to take advantage of its convenience.

I will keep buying my Shoxx at Kinokuniya and my Gothic Lolita Bibles or whateverthehell from my friend's comic shop, though. Hot Topic will be spared the curse of any of my smut-money. razz

Yeah, I'd love to see them sell that and Arena37°C.
[But I don't know if I could afford 60 bucks a month on magazines. Dx]

Arena is really too pop oriented for me, I used to get an issue now and then if it had an artist I liked, but then there was that stretch where Waive was in every freaking issue...

Friggin' Hot Topic here at my dead mall is hiding Shoxx and Cure. Couldn't find the damn 'zines last time I went and thought they didn't sell anymore until one of my friends had two of each. ********.

Hot Topic pisses me off. I don't have any way to go downtown to all the REAL punk stores, so I'm forced to go to HT, but I really don't like it. I mean, seeing all the stuff they have in there now.....It's, like, the same stuff I find in Nordstrom. They're not even PRETENDING to be punk anymore. stressed

On the other hand, Hot Topic is the ONLY place I can get Cure / Shoxx magazines (plus other semi-cool stuff, like Nightmare Before Christmas....Cliche, I know.). So I'll put up with it, even if I don't like it.

{{My friend is actually completely convinced that J-Rock is going to become mainstream, due to Dir en grey's emergance (The FVT, Agitated Screams of Maggots being shown on MTV, saku being nominated for some "Best Video Award" on MTV2, W2d being sold at Hot Topic, etc.), but I disagree. The true fans will stick around once Diru's not cool anymore, and those are the only people who matter. (Dir en grey is actually really popular at my school, it seems. A LOT of people know about them, and they're mostly of the pop-punk crowd.) She's worried all the popular girls will be all, "OMG LEIK KYO'S SOOOOOOOO HOTT!!!!!" but, honestly, I don't know a single prep who could stomach his self-mutilation.}}

You have to admit, this is a oppurtune time to become a fan. Because J-Rock is gaining acceptance, it's easier to find stuff. But, again, the true fans are the ones who are going to stick with it, no matter how old or new they are.

Personally, I feel there's no such thing as "good" scene kid.
I don't care if its preps or so called punk/goths who like jrock as long as they take it and themselves seriously and respect it for a legitimate artform that takes time and skill and passion to create and perform.
If they only like it 'cause its "cool" then I prefer the them to take their enthusiasm elsewhere.
Fandom in general loses its meaning over time until all the worth is so face value and shallow.

I was sad when I went to HT, cause they were playing Dir en Grey, and I searched all over the CDs for them. I finally asked if they had any albums, and they said, "Nope."
I love HT, but it bugs me sometimes that they don't have all the stuff on their website.
But usually I have pretty good luck in there. *hugh her soon-to-get-for-xmas Joey Ramone hoodie*

Dir en Grey in the new Fools Mate you say?

I will pick one up at Kinokuniya tomorrow (my best friend owes me a trip and I'm dying to show him this art doll in a magazine I saw there because it reminds me of both his art and his visual kei fixation). Want anything scanned or anything?

Let me be your shoppin' ninja. I like to spread the love. razz

I'm surprised that people still posting in my topic. I thought it would had died. Oh well.

The real reason why Jrock is starting to pop up is because people who work at Hottopic had a petition to have Jrock in Hottopic. This have been going on for years, and finally they decided to do it.

So basically, it wasn't Hottopic's idea, it was the Jrock fans that wanted it and it was in high demand. So thank them. Hottopic, surprisingly, had nothing to do with this.

The bitter old woman in me croaks "That's 'cause management up at corporation of HT aren't scensters, they're big fat old white men watching the stocks go up and down"
But that's true, and more often than not I have gripes with the fandom itself and not the enablers.

I'm just getting old and grouchy ::flops over, bones creaking::

If it was like that, Shoxx would have been at Hottopic 10 years ago. Jrock is in Hottopic because of a petition; FACT.

Then again, I can't stand elitists who thinks that they are the first ones who discovered Jrock. Even though it's been popular in America for a long time (not saying you are, but you wreak of it).

Regardless, getting rid of Hottopic it's not going to stop people from getting into Jrock. We have this thing called Anime.

The wise old women in me says "People need to deal with it."
