Alchemy is REAL!!! It's a magical psuedo-science that deals with the elements, Fire, Water, Earth, and Wind and heat and cold, wet and dry. It was a beliefe that everything has a state of perfection. That's what alchemy was used for! It was originaly used to chnge metals into gold. Alchemists were searching for the Philosopher's Stone to amplify their alchemy by making transmutations easier. This, in theory, would help the process of making gold easier. Alchemists also wanted to prolonge life. Thus, they belived that the Philosopher's Stone would produce an Elixir of Life. (It's like the Sorcerer's Stone from Harry Potter.) However, transmutations, accordin to the alchemists' creed, could only be preformed when the planets are in a certain alingment. Alchemists believed that each planet represented a certain type of metal. The sun is gold, Mercury is quicksilver, and i forgot the rest. But alchemy has been rejected since and is now as real as a fairy tale. See the World Book Encyclopedia.
wow that is truely interesting!

Alchemy originated in China, starting the Elixir of Life Theory. then it spreaded to Egypt, then Arabia, then throughout the rest of Europe. Even though it was a pseudo-science, or fake science, many famous scientists actually studied alchemy. One of our famous scientists was Sir Issac Newton. However, the law in FMA known as Equivalent Exchange never existed. Even though alchemists sacrificed to get something of equal value, they never actually called it "Equivalent Exchange". Also, some alchemists would say, "I have made the Stone. I do not possess it by theft but by the gift of God. I have made it and daily have it in my power, having formed it often with my own hands. I write the things that I know."
Thank the World Book Encyclopedia!!!
Oh, the reason in the show they're called Transmutation "Circles" may be because transmutations were based on planetary alignments. And since planets revolve around the sun in an eliptical pattern, it's only natural assuming Hiromu Arakawa did her research. But this is my wild guess. The scientists/chemists of today thank alchemists because it is the basis for modern-day chemistry!

One day I was curious I searched it. I had found Allchemy was clearly a use of mathamatics and a simply gods use of such. Mainly used in witchcraft or wizedry. Of course some may have believed it to be real others simply a mde up facter. In this case Fullmetal Alchemist is clearly fictioun for the use of serton ingrediants has an unbeliveable use for witchcraft uses ingredients for spells and or potiones and the Pholophesior stone is clearly used in the Mideval times for it was used in Harrypotter different from FMA but true the philosepher meaning is of great powere but who truly knows. But FMA is a fiction but yet uses some truth.

The Circles are not actually based on planetary configurements but moreover based upon the basics of Druic paterns. The "first" circle drawn by Ed in the series is what is called the Udian circle, meant to speed up plant growth.

Yup yup! Alchemy is real. It was funny because when I was learning chemistry in my previous year of high school, the textbook mentioned something about alchemists...I was really into my class at that moment, and lucky for me...my teacher was a big fan of chemistry, so we mostly focussed on chemistry and alchemists, and philosphers....i aced that part of school so easily XD. My teacher asked me what was the law of conservation of mass and i was easily able to answer it cuz it was basically the law of alchemy. Then i remember reading something about how alchemists were careful to not let anyone steal their material, so they wrote down all their research in a code which they could only understand.....i guess that's....in a way kind of like a transmutation circle...but...not in circle form XD

Alchemy is not fake. In the golden age people would combine the 12 basic elements to try to come up with a type of medicine put they would often make a poison and kill their patients.

That's always made me wonder. Alchemy is really cool, but I'm sure there's alot of stuff made up about it for the show.

Sorry Thorin there are only seven elements/metals according to alchemists.

Gold
Silver
Quicksilver
Lead
Copper
Iron
and one last one which escapes me at the moment...

Alchemists were eager to lead people to there works... They would leave indirect clues in their book for people to find... The reason that some alchemists spoke in code, is that they didn't want a Philosophers Stone fall into the wrong hands... and yes I do beleive that the Philosophers stone does exist.

actually the philosopher stone is a real stone. they have found proof of a real person, i dont know the name, but he had the stone and destroyed it before he died. crying
