Here's what the freshman concert band contains:
One oboe. Too many flutes. Too many clarinets. No bass clarinets. Five or six trumpets. Two awesome french horns (me being one). One baritone sax. One tenor sax. Two alto saxes. One trombone. One tuba. 3-5 euphoniums (some are around one day, then they're suddenly skipping). Four or five percussion.
I think altogether, there's only six french horns in our school, and there's almost 1,000 of us altogether (whether in band or not) at school.

Ya. I play trombone and I'm the only trombone player in my whole school! That's alot of people with only 1 trombone. It's really odd.

Flosty Gritter So yesterday I went to a band competition to see my soon to be school's band play. While I was there I noticed that out of 11 bands only 5 even had trombones. And to make matters worse the band that got 1st in Kingston's (my soon to be school) division was huge and didn't have ANY. are there any other endangered instruments out there?? thats terrible i play the trombone and we have 3 trombones in our band including me

Trombone is a dying instrument unfortunately. I always thought that was a shame. Its really the younger teacher's faults for not getting some trumpets/other instrumentalists to switch over at a young age.
I know the only reason I played trumpet was because the only two instruments I really knew as a fifth grader was the trumpet and the drums. So I just picked something familiar.
In my band, when I left.... there were three trombones. And two were God awful. We had two french horns and one was bad and other one was in districts. One tuba, FOUR Baritone Saxes (we had a rocking section), two bassoons, two bass clarinets and two tenor saxes.
So it was pretty much the Tuba, French Horn and Trombones that were lacking... and the alto clarinet which I don't think I have ever seen. sweatdrop

Surprisingly enough, we have a lot of trombones in my band. (Well, not a lot...But we have four. And that's just the symphonic band.) Four trombones, two French Horns (one of which is graduating, I believe), one base clarinet, two barry saxes, and one tuba. We had two tubas last year, and both of them graduated...Same goes for our base clarinets. Luckily, underclassmen switched/came in as freshmen, so we have at least one.
It's hard to come by a tuba player in our school.

We'll have no bass clarinets whatsoever next year. And I'm pretty sure we're going to have a good trombone section for the future. We had to play for the 5th graders to show off and show how cool band is. And we kind of brought in Steve Weist (trombone God!) to show of how cool the trombone is.. So half the band for the middle school next year will be dominated by trombones... Oh the joys.
